Update: I wrote a book on this very topic! Check out What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming an Instructional Designer: www.amazon.com/What-Before-Be...
Here is the ebook version: www.theinstructionaldesignboo...
What do Instructional Designers wish they knew before becoming IDs? I couldn’t find this information anywhere, so I did the research. I asked 50 Instructional Designers what they wish they knew before becoming IDs. Here's what they said:
Explaining What an Instructional Designer Does
Learning Project Management Skills
Developing a Brand and Portfolio
Knowing Instructional Design is a Career and is Worth Pursuing
Working with Difficult SMEs and Building Relationships with Faculty

I sell computers online (amongst other things) and I recently sold something to a professor at Valparaiso University. I asked him, "So how did the transition to online learning go for you over the pandemic?" He actually said the words "Students don't learn online". Blink. Blink. That is someone who has not embraced or even attempted to learn how amazing online learning can be. I am SO glad I am becoming an Instructional Designer.

Ugh, that myth still exists today at many universities, and now they are paying dearly for it. I’m glad you are trying so hard to be an ID to help change this stereotype.

Two years later this has been such a help to me. I work for a public transportation company who hired me as a part of their newly added learning and development department. I was hired a few years back and seem to have accidentally stumbled into this area as a result of the tasks and duties associated with my role. The more research I do the more I seem to fall in love with ID and have since been trying to gather as much information on the field prior to returning to school to gain the necessary credentials to move forward more confidently. This has been extremely informative and appreciated! Thank you again

Thank you for this concise response to what an ID needs to know. And what to tell others about what I do as an Educ Consultant & an ID. I am also helping transitioning teachers understand the difference between an ID and a Curriculum Designer. I am a new subscriber!!!!

And you've made a lifelong fan in me the second you said, "I wasn't growing, I wasn't learning!" I can count on one hand the number of learning professionals with this kind of humility. Why do you think so many in the learning profession are such terrible learners?
@DrLukeHobson
@DrLukeHobson 3 года назад
It's all a balancing act. On one side, you are supposed to be the expert when it comes to learning so you don't want to admit that you could improve. On the other, it's impossible to know everything and there is always someone out there innovating. Everyone hates change, but education in particular seems to struggle with it the most. Once I realized that I could make my students' learning experiences even better, I knew it was time for a change.

Thank you for the informative video; just one suggestion - if you set the camera's aperture to manual instead of auto, the image will not constantly change in brightness as you move within the camera's sensor. Cheers

Hi Luis! I would’ve absolutely loved this tip when I made the video haha. It was actually my first one on RU-vid! Since then, I got a new camera and figured out the lighting issue. If you watch my latest video, you’ll see a drastic difference. Appreciate the help!

I think the statement "I Understand how people learn online" minimizes the whole of instructional design. I'm an ID and I design instructional materials for in-person, hybrid, and online learning. In-person courses are still taught at K-12, higher ed, and in the corporate world. Hands-on experiential learning expereinces are still crucial in many fields of study.
@DrLukeHobson

Hi Melissa! Thank you for the feedback and I agree! I used the word "online" specifically since my role, at the time, heavily involved collaborating with professors to transform their F2F courses online and the online learning aspects were where they needed help. But, my role did/does have many F2F and hybrid trainings, workshops, webinars, etc. So it is much more than just online modalities. Now a days, I don't say the "online" terminology.

Thank you for sharing your expertise. Would ID only in the online learning space?
@DrLukeHobson
@DrLukeHobson 3 года назад
Hi Liza! Instructional design can apply beyond the online learning space. Instructional design is in the same wheelhouse as learning and development types of trainings.

Very informative, Dr. Luke! One question - Can a person be a L&D Manager (creating and providing traditional trainings) & an Instructional Designer/Developer (creating and providing online trainings) both? I just find the ID field to be a lot more developing every day and somewhere feel that I can only do justice to either of them. Any insights into this would be helpful.
@DrLukeHobson
@DrLukeHobson 3 года назад
Great question Abhishek! When it comes to being an instructional designer, your responsibilities will vary greatly depending upon your organization. For some, their main responsibilities are designing and developing the courses. For others, there is much more of a hybrid role that leads into L&D, like with what you are describing. For instance, in my role, I have led trainings and online webinars even though my job is much more aligned to a traditional ID role compared to L&D. At the end of the day, both roles focus on the learning experience and providing value to their learners. By learning a bit more about one area, you'll find several cross overs into the other. If you can acquire both skill sets, your skills will be incredibly valuable to any organization.
