Theres no such thing as a ‘cheap’ move, it is your responsibility to beat that move and its often easier than you think. Learning fundamentals and easy jab gaps with quick and easy punishes is MUCH MORE VALUABLE than learning combos. Medium attacks are often safe on block and will reward better punishes than heavys

In all fairness, I clicked because I was entirely thirst trapped by the model, but I stayed because I absolutely need this as a new player, also, I was teetering back and forth on the rat strat because I internalized those statistics they give you at the end of the round when you lose and rat strats do NOT help with the technique stat, but you might have brought me back to the right path

the biggest thing for me, is relinquishing the conept that I can control whether i win or lose, i can only tip the balance. the absolute truth is: there are two people playing and sometimes when i lose it has fuck all to do with me and everything to do with the power of my opponent, internalising that one concept has changed my mindset entirely. pattheflip has a lesson on it somewhere

One of the great things about fighting games is that even though you control half the game, you have the opportunity to deal with whatever your opponent is doing. There is a perfect way to deal with what they're doing(At least most of the time). You always have something to learn, either about yourself, your character, their character, or them.
@HotaruLikesDagashi
@HotaruLikesDagashi 7 месяцев назад
@@sauceinmyface9302 I agree. While there are some situations that are true 50/50s (or worse like blocking Millia or I-no) there's always going to ways that you could have avoided those places to begin with. Strong neutral, smart defense, and a good understanding of risk reward during pressure are all keys to breeding consistency. There's reasons that even at top level there's still gaps in the power levels. Everyone has weaknesses that can be exploited by others. Knowledge is power, and power means being able to handle any situation in a FG.

@@HotaruLikesDagashi this is honestly what's making it the hardest for me to get into fighting games tho, it feels like there's such a huge mountain of thigns to learn to even start being average, that it's really hard. In my experience, most guides are aimed at people that already have experience with similar games but not specifically ggs for exemple, so staying motivated to learn is a bit hard cause it is pretty lonely in a way

@@lNovalandl I know that feeling. I've been playing FGs for like 2.5 years, but only recently feel like I was really able to start thinking in them if that makes any sense. two tips for new players: -hold block when you're getting off of the ground, when you're about to get hit, basically most bad situations. preferably while crouching, since low moves are much faster than high (overhead) ones. blocking is incredibly important, but when i played Ky a lot of new players i fought wouldn't block low or at all when i attacked them when they got off the ground -if someone does a super (aka overdrive) out of nowhere, but you're doing a move so you can't block it, you can roman cancel and hold back to block the move and punish it. it should make dealing with "wakeup supers" (which is someone doing a super when getting off of the ground) way easier also ky's foundre arc isnt an overhead for some reason if you play him lmao

@@Ladydakness to legit answer, it's GG's unique mechanic. At the cost of the same amount of meter as a super, you can push 3 of your 4 attack buttons (or a macro button if you assigned one) to basically cancel the animation of whatever the fuck you're doing with the exact benefits being based on context. The colors shown in the screenshots in the video correlate to those contexts. You have Red ones for combo extending, Yellow as a sort of absolute last resort push block when you're in a blockstring, Purple to cancel whiffed attacks, & Blue for in neutral. The other bonus aside from cancelling animations is that most of the contexts also slow down the opponent's animations if they get hit by the shockwave the RC does. And no, me knowing all this off the top of my head does not stop me from NEVER REMEMBERING TO USE THEM MID MATCH BECAUSE MY BRAIN IS TERRIBLE AT ACTUALLY USING THEM
@dagad1kt

@@bignoob2726 im 2 month late, hope you still playn or someone gave you the answer : block until the opponent ends the combo and enjoy the lag, how are you suposed to know when it ends? its up to you. watch the combo during the game, dont stress, understand when to low/high/jump block respect the rythm (there are exceptions but if a begginer is reading this you dont need to know em) and then when you feel you can hit, you break their momentum and you try to either come back to neutral if you know you have the advantage, or you try to take back the momentum and combo them. voilà

One thing that really helped me with Fighting Games is learning not to worry too much about being perfect. When I first started, I would spend hours in training mode trying to absorb every piece of information I could about the game, a character, their moves, everything. But it meant I got really, really bored and would give up before I actually started playing. Eventually, I decided "fuck it, we ball" and just hopped straight into ranked. And you know what? I had a great time. Was I worse than if I had spent more time labbing? Most definitely. But at the end of the day, it's a game, and game's are supposed to be fun. It doesn't matter how good you are at the game if you don't actually play. Nowadays, if I wanna learn a fighting game, I play the tutorial, find my main, mess around in training mode til I get the basic idea, learn a few B&B combos, and then hop in. And I have a much better time.

The hardest part of playing a fighting game is to pick a character from the select screen, second hardest part is to keep having fun It is incredible hard to learn strive in my opinion as your first fighter, the regular moves aren't as flashy and aren't as many command normals as street fighter or tekken were you press a button and something comes out. I think there's a huge difference between the idea of " i want to have fun" vs " i want to improve" and i think we asa community need to provide a opportunity for new players to both have fun and improve at the same time when teaching people how to play the game

Very good tips for brand new players. You formulated so well what I had trouble teaching my newer friends because I kinda forgot how I learned. One more thing I wish I'd knew when I started was to find ways to make the grind fun. For example focusing only on a specific mixup/setup/combo to land during a tower session. Doesn't matter if you win or lose, as long as you land that shit, you did your job and just added a new weapon to your arsenal.

Anji is a great first pick, very easy to understand and even easier to troll people with. Another important tip I wanna add is to learn what frame traps are (so you know why you get COUNTER-ed all the time and how to do that to other players). I agree with everything you said but the "needing to know framedata", it just doesn't matter until you're on floor 10.5. Just know what the mega-punishable moves are (ky/millia/sol slides, sol's knee jump, all the DPs, ect) and simply press stuff after blocking.

I agree with most of what you say but the combo tool is really good if you know how to make use of it, because instead of learning the comboes there you can learn how the moves of your character interact with each other, so basically what comboes into what and if i can throw that after this.
@tamajack8179
@tamajack8179 7 месяцев назад
Yeah I think people use combo builder incorrectly most of the time, usually working under the assumption that if they can pull off a wall-to-wall combo consistently, then they should be able to pull it off in a game and win with it. The reality for most players is that most games will be one of three things: you get smoked, the other player gets smoked, or you play a heavy footsies-game with combos that don't go over 5 hits and someone dies third round to a counter hit far slash. That being said, combo maker, specifically practicing shorter combos has helped a lot with my own understanding of Johnny's kit; I will practice shorter combos that work on a specific concept (i.e., canceling wild assult into jumping attacks) and see how I can either extend or incorporate those smaller bits naturally into or from other strings through training mode. Once the muscle memory is built and you can recognize when you are in those situations naturally in game, what you are able to get away with tends to come pretty naturally and will be more varied and adaptable than anything that's long and flashy in combo maker.

I kinda disagree on the character part, I feel like playing the character that you like is integral to the starting off process. Personally I'd rather get my ass kicked playing/learning a character I love vs the double wammy of getting it kicked while playing a character I was told to play. I literally got strive because of Bridget cause I liked her design but I didn't like how she played so I moved on to May and now strive is literally my favorite fighting game. Getting your ass kicked and learning is way easier when you actually like the character you're playing.

I’d agree only if you have some sort of experience with fighting games. If you’re a completely new player, you already have challenges doing inputs to begin with so picking a character like Zato or Asuka for an example would be completely overwhelming for you since you have to mind negative edging in the case of Zato and the amount of resources you need to keep up with as an extra challenge is more harming that doing good

One of the biggest things I found was I was focusing on just learning straight up combos on a character I wanted to learn (Ky kiske) without really realising what any other character can do and just kept spamming my opening without really knowing how to block or the idea of taking turns attacking and defending, so I ended up feeling frustrated that my combo training was useless. Much better to get a feel for the character and just play online in parks or your tower ranking to get a feel of the basics and to not worry about hitting these insane combos at the beginning.

If you are new remember that tierlists are made from tournament players for tournament players. They don´t (have to) apply at other levels. You won´t be able to abuse the stuff that makes a char top tier and neither can your opponent so pick something that is fun for you, your charackter is most likely not holding you back atm.

This video is so amazing, the depth and detail of the dustloop and framedata was honsenestly eye opening as I've been playing this game for almost a year now and had no idea this existed. Also, for anyone having trouble with fighting ky, here's a great tip for you, from a ky main themself: foudre arc, the flip kick, is incredibly plus, so dont try to punish it, in fact, just sit down and let them mix you up. Oh, also, stun dipper, the slide, is also like this, so be careful and play defensively if you block it. As a last piece of parting advice, be careful as to not press any buttons when playing against ky and let him attack you. You'll, uhh, get a secret ending. Thanks for reading and remember my advice guys!

Honestly great video!! I would like to add some things I learned from starting the game some months ago too ( I started around august I believe.) Like you said, the Combo Tool feature in my opinion is only really useful if you're more experienced in the character and want to understand FAR FAR more niche things of the character's toolbox. It is also nice to see how internalized the character's moves are in your head. Roman Canceling is so important! Adding to the tip of "dying with meter is bad", I think the most brainless way to use roman cancels is, during your turn, using it to reset a blockstring so you don't get punished. Lastly a very specific tip for anyone who is on South America, that I wish I also knew, is that as counter-intuitive as it sounds for some reason almost everyone who's from South America plays on a US Server. When I started playing I almost never could match with people in South America, and when I swapped to the US Server I constantly meet people with 40/30ms ping. No I have no idea why the South America community decided to migrate to there.

this vid was uploaded a while ago but I want to throw my hat in the ring: I picked up GGS as my first fighting game a few days ago, being coached by my very skilled friends who have been in the FGC for years. I think, as a new player who has applied a lot of advice I've found online, ultimately what you do is up to you, and whatever works for you, works. Quite literally fuck around and find out. When I play games, I follow a belief that the difficulty of a character doesn't matter if you like how they play or their aesthetic. Finding a character you like is WAY more important for enjoying the game than a character who is "easy to learn" (or if they happen to meet both criteria- big W). If Asuka is EXACTLY what you like in a character and you know you want to play them when you improve, play them. You will have a far more difficult learning curve to the game, yes, but the learning curve doesn't matter if you don't want to play in the first place. Just know what you're getting into. The combo creator is a great tool if you make it one. Yes, most of the combos probably won't ever be used, but don't go into it with the mindset you're actually learning combos- go into it to find the relationship between different attacks and how they string together, to learn timings on gatlings, stuff like that. This will teach you how to lab your own combos in the future, because you aren't copy pasting what somebody else told you to do, you're learning how the formula works. Also, numpad notation is OP lol please learn it love y'all and have fun! the journey is the fun part, so have fun when you learn. turn it into a game of itself, set believable goals if you want to rapidly improve, vod review, etc. remember you can't learn if you don't get shit on, so don't be afraid to lose.

Now I have begun picking it up slowly again but this time I am playing A.B.A because I just really wanna play her. I know it's not a good character to pick up in the beginning but I feel that when playing a game the most important thing is that you make sure you have fun, and sometimes even if you get your ass whooped if you are on the character that you wanna play as that could still be the fun that keeps you playing the game rather than just dropping it eventually. Of course if it begins not being fun I might switch it up but for now I am ready to accept the absolute clapping I am about to receive online and during friendlies because in the end it's all progress to learning the character I actually wanna play as :)

Strive was my first fighting game too, and I want to convey that if you’re new, then feeling powerless is part of the experience. Yes, you’re gonna mess up the dp input a lot. Yeah, you’re gonna accidentally jump a lot. Yup, you’re gonna feel awkward having to do those inputs you’ve been practicing in one direction flipped once you play online and end up on the right side. That’s all okay. Don’t give up. Even if you aren’t playing a character you really enjoy because you don’t know your tastes yet, just take your time. There’ll be a moment where things *click.* And then there’ll be another, and another after that. They’ll just keep happening, and they’ll each feel indescribable. Just trust the process and believe in yourself.

I would agree with the assertion that you should choose a less technical or niche character if you're completely new to the genre. For me personally picking up axl but coming from other fighting games,he is definitely easily punished and requires commitment to moves and skills that aren't necessarily transferrable, but I also knew what I was getting into and you learn a lot about fundamental character elements and matchups just by playing your enemies and paying attention to them. I would've dropped the game if I went for a more standard character, and that's because axl's gameplan and matchups showcase what's appealing to me about the game itself and my style generally.

Blueberry man is love blueberry man is life. Definitely don’t start with HC but if you take the time to figure him out and really nail down good times to reload or focus in a fight. It’s a blast playing him, though he’s not for everyone.

I had the exact same experience with happy chaos haha, and i felt like shit then i ended up playing nago but then i felt stuck and now i am just an Anji main, love the man, even yesterday i got for the first time to celestial after abt 300 hours, nice video and thanks for giving advise for new players! 🔥

that tip of being willing to switch characters is so true. As someone who started in Xrd who's old main STILL isn't in the roster, I was a Nago main since launch (blood meter rushdown go BRRR plus he's a VAMPIRE SAMURAI THAT IS JUST COOL AS FUCK) but switched to Testament after trying them out (the goth aesthetic mixed with the mixup setplays is FUN)... then I ended up an Asuka main after he came out because oh look at that I was a Phoenix Wright main in Marvel 3 & he's basically that on Smash Ultimate Hero crack.

Yeaaaa going for a character because they looked cool was probably my biggest mistake. I bought GGST for the songs, gameplay, visuals and characters. Got Jack-o's DLC too. I am still new, having only bought the game yesterday. So playing Jack-o just because... you know... was punishing as hell. Currently I am maining May and seeing about practicing moves.

As an Asuka main, if you know Marvel 3 at all one thing that could help with getting into the headspace is he's basically if Wright was on crack.

One thing I for sure took waaaaay too seriously were tierlists. I mean yeah there are stonger character but the game is pretty balanced. You have a way of winning with every character, so dont stress so much if the character you choose is a "low tier" character. With enough time, you will eventually meet players that make "low tiers" look like absolute gods, so just play whatever the fuck you feel like.

The playing with a friend tip is seriously undermined. I learnt this game without a friend (no friends that played fighting games) and it was pretty difficult. An recently I’ve been playing with a friend and teaching him the game, and the speed at which he learnt compared to mine was way faster. Go find someone if you’re starting, seriously.

solid video mate! was not that useful for me personally, since I'm at the amateur stage and all of this is common knowledge to me. However, the last tip is so valid like crazy, cuz being good and being unpredictable is so fucking op. Like ill use the terms from the other game thats why radiants lose to silvers since their random as faust. Lossing is ok, since a sword cant get sharper without stone. so take fun at losing and learn why you lost bad spacing? wrong BnB? actual matchup issue? and so on so forth. Then take one tip/advise/strat/info at a time dont overwhelm yourself, think of it like a pyramid, it was not build under one night was it? it was meticulously risen block by block to soar higher or at par with the others. ad finally, Godspeed arising gearsters! also nice pfp!

was able to get confident with a harder character so I just accepted it would be harder to learn and kept playing them because it wasn't fun for me to choose a different one. Guess I'm an asuka main.

I started on Xrd and whoo boy. I don’t think it was a mistake, since the game is still very fun, but it’s almost entirely veteran players who will not hesitate to go 25-1 against me. You are not likely to win. Other players will simply be better. Just do your best and enjoy

I understand how important roman cancels are. No, I understand that they are important. It's too early for me to really understand how important they are. Anyways, I understand that I should use them. The only issue I have is that I hate playing on a controller. The two biggest things I hate about it are 1. Using the left stick for a fighting game feels terrible* and 2. I hate not being able to have my fingers on each of the buttons. Using a keyboard doesn't sound ideal either because moving without a stick also sounds like it would suck. *the left stick thing isn't entirely true. I'm used to it in DBFZ, but real shocker, the only motion inputs in that game are QC Forward and QC Backward. They aren't exactly hard to input. I'm also used to the DP input because of terry in smash bros. Regardless, something about using a controller in strive feels terrible, so I'll probably get a fight stick.

There is also anime related to whole granblue and I think pretty well made one. Well its a mostly made for advertising the mobile game but still really good anime and I recommend to watch if someone is interested in bare bone lore of the granblue fantasy. (the lore in granblue is really huge and pretty long well its a 10 year old mobile game with over 400+ characters if we dont count duplicates (lore thing) so yeah...) Also there is this game called granblue fantasy relink that also explains some of the lore aspects (not much but still something)
