"I felt the ghosts of the past in Manchester United....some players it can paralyse them....but for me it was helpful. I felt the energy of the ghosts, I felt the energy of the past, it makes me even stronger" And THAT is why Eric was The King.
If ever there was an ex-player who deserved a statue at Old Trafford, it's King Eric. Without question, the fans' all-time favourite. There will never be another like Cantona.
Couldnt agree more, especially for someone who was born late 80s like me! We needed a hero to push us for the long awaited title and he needed a place to call home. Made for each other
As a fourth generation United fan from Manchester I love the fact that Eric (my favortite player of all time) picked the gold and green shirt as those colors symbolise our history and identity and it is way past time for us to regain our identity! GLAZERS OUT!!!!!!!
We’ll drink, a drink, a drink, to Eric the King, the King, the King He’s the Leader of our football team He’s the greatest Centre Forward That the world has ever seen
I'm a City fan but Eric is a big memory of my childhood. Remember him at Leeds and he was good, but he was something else at Utd. The confidence/arrogance/style was another level. Reminds me of Ibrahimovic a lot. Could watch that chip and lob over and over.
Not even looking for attention but my dad who is going through cancer treatment at the moment, cantona was his favourite player. I was born in 1990 so I remember vaguely bits from his time at United. Seeing this has made me abit emotional not gona lie it’s just mad how they chose cantona at this time. One of my fondest memories of my childhood was when me, my dad & brother went to giggsy’s testimonial against Celtic & cantona came on as a sub and no one knew he would be appearing, safe to say my dad was ecstatic when he came on, thanks bt sport for doing this, I’ll be showing my dad this when I see him tomorrow!
Best wishes to your father. Eric was never, ever in a hurry. The game revolved around him. He magnetised it. The nearest player to him probably is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but he hasn't had the profound impact upon a club and its culture, identity, quite like Cantona.
He made our great squad believe and overcame the 26 year hoodoo. If anyone for years earlier sung “ we’re gonna win the league “ Everyone else would shush them in the ground literally immediately. We felt cursed. Eric lifted it. He changed that. He laid the path for the future of the young players and the club. The King.
Growing up as a United/Cantona fan I use to style my hair like his and pop the collars of my P.E. Kit up like Cantona..even if we were made to play rounders. Legend.
This man is something else,I was lucky enough to grow up in Manchester and a time the club did to do a lot of community work, remember when he came to my primary school and the aura this man had just had me in such awe
One of the most artistic skillful players ever. He could drag the team with him to win games. One of my favourite footballers of all time. An absolute Legend.
Best ever Premier league player; hands down. Extremely influential to sport & culture. Those too young to remember have no idea of the impact he made on English football.
Might have been influential, but nowhere near the best player ever. He played in a league low on quality. He vanished from the big CL and French tournament games.
As a lifelong Liverpool supporter, I've taken to Eric with like. He broke my heart in 1996, in the FA Cup Final, and never held it against him. The only exception I take is his stamp on John Moncur at County Ground, I believe around 1994. He was one Special Footballer.
Same here..saw Fergie take over and everything that came with it. Amazing time to be a fan... Norwich away ..Cantona scored that night ..what a performance
Eric doesn't have the most appearances, most assists or goals, but he will always be a legend because of his presence and aura -- he gelled everyone together without mentioning that he wanted to lead. Everyone automatically looked up to him.
Wel drink a drink a drink for Eric the king the king the king he’s the leader of our football team he’s the greatest centre forward that the worrrrrrrrld have ever seeen ec7🏆
Eric Cantona the king of Manchester who just oozes that permanent class & aura. Love the fact he picked out two United shirts one bring the old Newton Heath colours. A true hero of Manchester one who completely changed everything when he joined us. Me fave all time player
As an Owl I still can't believe we let him slip through our fingers. Still I got to see his only 'appearance' for us at the Sheffield Arena in a 5-a-side game against the mighty Baltimore Blast 🤣
Eric isn't that fussed about looking back on his career (maybe why he doesn't wear an old shirt like normal guests do!) but he plays along like a gent 👌🏽
As an expat from Lancashires who lives in France, I have to say Eric is typically French. We English give the French stick but the average French bloke is a lot like an average English bloke (except they can’t dance :)). Eric knows how he left Leeds……he was a ladies’ man….on his own patch.
I love Cantona. I'll say that upfront. And I'm not a Utd fan. The thing I would say is that in terms of football he was a good...not great player. He had skills yes but he lacked pace. Utd fans love him because he led a team of young players to Utds first PL title and other domestic trophies. But he was largely ineffective in Europe. He was the right player at the right time for Utd. And beyond football he was a cultural icon. I love Cantona for many more reasons than what he achieved in football.
