Hello, Miss Morgan. This is Rickey Hughes. I have just watched your video about starting up a Bookkeeping Business. I believe those are great ideas, you have, about starting up a business in Bookkeeping. I already have a Bookkeeping and Accounting business at home. However, so far, it has not been too successful. I hope to see more of your upcoming videos, hopefully about the right way to operate a Bookkeeping and Accounting business. That is all. Thank you so much. I also look forward to hearing from you.

@@christineross7495 Congrats on getting started! It may take a little bit to build up some clients, so I don't think it hurts to start putting feelers out right away (within a couple months of when you're ready to start). The main thing is learning QB, and you may work a little bit slowly with your first client (until your skills progress), but you'll get faster and faster. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Morgan, I have a clarifying question. Can you be more specific about what your parameters a medium size business would have? What data do you use to determine if a business is too small or too large for your liking?
@sne8565

I work in the finance industry and am also a licensed esthetician. I want to combine both worlds and provide bookkeeping for spa and salon owners. I've watched some videos of yours and other RU-vid bookkeepers but can't seem to get a good idea of salary. REALISTICALLY, what can I charge for level 1 bookkeeping (I know you charge $250) as a new bookkeeper, and level 2. Thank you so very much for your videos!
@FinePointsBookkeeping

Love it! What a great niche and experience. I'm still figuring out how to teach pricing, but basically I'd estimate the hours it would take you and multiply by the hourly rate you'd like to be earning (plus a little extra for unknowns). Here's what I said in a different video: I classify small clients as approximately 5hr/month, medium as 10hr/month and large as 20hr/month. This isn't a perfect science, but that is a general idea of how I'm thinking of it. I don't know exactly when on-boarding a client where they will be (although I am getting better at determining this the more experience I get)... so, I just charge an hourly rate for the first few months. The client won't know exactly what their bill will be, but that is often the case with service providers (lawyers, accountants, plumbers, etc.). Then, if possible, I do try to offer a fixed rate once I know how much work the client will have.

Just got a little further into this video. So, I used to own a real estate and financing business for a little over 12 years. Working from home then was perfect because I had a baby, but I seemed to lose connection with the outside world. I was a one woman show majority of my conversation came from negotiations, conference calls, etc. So when I did attempt to hang out, I often did not have much to talk about, besides mothering and my business. Now that I'm a professor, I will have a lot more interaction with people outside of just business, so I don't anticipate running into the same issue.

Yes, so true! That is one of the drawbacks of working from home (or staying home with kids). Glad you have a good balance now!

Hi Morgan, First of all really good content. I love all of tour points. I just have a quick question: In your video you said you like medium size business so you can give them “advice”. How can you do that when you don’t have an accounting degree? What if you give a client the wrong advice and you make lose money? And then they sue you? (That is one of the questions I always asked myself and I’m an accountant. I guess that is something that has kept me away of giving advice).
@FinePointsBookkeeping
@FinePointsBookkeeping 4 года назад
Hi! Thanks for watching! The type of advice I'm talking about is just general lay-person, business advice. Maybe something like "It seems like you're spending a large percentage of your income on advertising, are you getting a return on that investment?" or "here is a list of your open invoices." You're right, I'm not giving tax advice, but just observations as someone who is intimately aware of where each dollar is going.

I’m currently a stay at home mom but I’ve had data entry jobs before and enjoyed them. I’m looking to start a stay at home business since I have small kiddos but would also like to contribute toward our family financial goals. My biggest concern is honestly noisy kids/crying baby during potential client calls. How were you able to work evenings and weekends and still manage home, kids and clients? I think it’s amazing that you were able to do all of that!
@FinePointsBookkeeping
@FinePointsBookkeeping 4 года назад
I feel you! I really wasn't on the phone a ton with clients--yes, there's an initial phone call or two, but usually I could find a way to squeeze those in. I did a lot of babysitting trades with friends/neighbors (sometimes for bookkeeping). And, many of my clients were flexible about a phone call during non-typical business hours. It didn't really work for me to work while my kids were with me (although some people do). I used nap time, babysitters and when my husband was home--maybe some screen time in a pinch. :) I do have a video on childcare ideas, I'll link it below if that helps. Also, keeping in mind your "why" is helpful when things are busy!

@@journeyssteps It's only been a couple of months since I even started thinking about bookkeeping. I've been watching a lot of videos (Morgan and others), but I'm still in the "is it right for me" stage and looking for the right accounting principles course before jumping into the QBO training and certification. It's been a long time since the accounting course in college! I sincerely hope bookkeeping is right for me so I can start as a side business to my full time job, then grow slow and steady to get more experience, more clients, and eventually make it my full time job. I want to have enough experience before retirement instead of starting then with no experience because I believe it will take some time to get clients at first. Thank you for your response, and I wish you much success!

I've set a minimum amount that I'll work for: $250 per month. I don't take clients that can't afford that per month.
