I feel like the only reason Paul released Chimchar in canon was because of Ash. Ash constantly interfering with Paul's methods of training Chimchar really triggered him, and then Ash commanding Chimchar in that last battle and Chimchar listening to him was the last straw. But that's just how I see it

I think there was a writing mistake with the battle against Paul. He ended up having seven Pokémon. ^^; • Aggron • Gastrodon • Drapion • Froslass • Ninjask • Electivire • Infernape

Should've swapped out Drapion or Aggron for Infernape and have it lose since Paul couldn't figure out how to get it's Blaze Ability to work, also maybe have it show some visible psychological problems from never getting away from Paul. Either that or at some point during his journey, Paul gave up on Chimchar and released it. But Ash wasn't there to save it.

Pretty nice. Only thing I wish was done differently was the last battle. Even if Paul and Ash didn't have a rivalry, I could still see Paul pushing Ash the wrong way, so I'd probably have Latias in that last battle over Lickylicky strictly because Ash doesn't really rock with Paul's attitude, so he pulls the weapon 😂

Coolio with this series so far. Here's an idea for you, if you think it's worth exploring: What if Paul was Ash's traveling companion? This was based off of the early promotional art of the Diamond and Pearl series in Japan, that featured Dawn, Ash, and Paul, with the respective starters, Piplup, Turtwig, and Chimchar.

I would have thought that the fame ash would get after winning the hoenn league would be significant enough to change the story, you would think Paul would recognize him, want to challenge him and they would still have their rivalry, guess not

I disagree with one thing. I feel like Paul would've just released Chimchar at somepoint since he never got Chimchar to mastered his Blaze ability like Ash did. At least Ash does fall victim to the Legend know as Tobias probably wasn't a good day for Paul losing his whole team to a Darkrai and not do anything against it. 😆 I like Ash's team it was different than anything he has ever had before, and Torterra been his Ace for his team was pretty cool too. 👍 Maybe this lose to Paul will push Ash in the Unova Region. Anyways another really good part, and will check out the next part.

Personally i would find it better if paul lost due to infernape going out of control and attacking everything since the reason why ash got through its issues was because of their bond

Why is paul having 7 pokemon insted of 6?? And i feel paul would have released chimchar irrespective of ash interference as chimchar didn't maater blaze nor gwt over its fear of zangoose in time.....ash played the main part on recovering from ita fear of zangoose

I feel like paul would a defeated tobias if he fought instead of ash. Paul far exceed ash but ash always had plot armour. Why 1 great strategiest and second best strategists after Cynthia in Sinnoh so paul can outsmart Tobias 2nd you see paul always gives all pokémons time to shine. While ash does not Lake acuity battle was a fair battle and without plot armour

Update After watching it, I kind of wish the other option won the poll. Don’t get wrong the anime really didn’t do Torterra justice and I get the feeling this was something similar to what was intended for him before they changed it to Chimchar’s story. But I think Ash choosing to become a Frontier Brain in this timeline seems more fitting. That and Latios vs Latias feels more fitting. Oh well
