God indeed died in the flesh, when He took on a human nature in the Person of Jesus Christ and died on the Cross. Yet in doing so He did not set His Divinity aside. As it is written in the Gospel of John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God;" and "the Word became flesh, and made his dwelling place among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth;" and "No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father's side, has revealed him." God willed this to happen, because in sinning mankind opened an unbridgeable gap between itself and God. It was a gap that only God could bridge, but the fault was with man. So God became man, and offered on behalf of man a sacrifice of infinite value to bridge that gap, so that eternal life might again be possible.
