Wishing Bruce Lee a Happy 81st Birthday! Video was supposed to go up earlier but kept getting blocked. It is now short scenes.
Just the deepfake► • [What if] Bruce Lee De...
DEEPFAKE TECHNICIANS►
Patrick Nan & Lili Doan
THIS VIDEO►
I tried making a Bruce Lee Deepfake on his character in Ip Man 4 (2019). Why the Split View? To show how close the Deepfake is to the original source. Audio? Wanted more ferocity like in Lee's 70's movies.
THOUGHTS►
So I’ve been spending time learning how to make Deepfakes for the past 6 months. This all started when I saw Corridor Digital’s Luke Skywalker DF video, and it was really well done. Therefore, I decided to look into Deepfakes cause I had one scene in mind that I wanted to see, Bruce Lee’s face on Danny Chan’s. But while that was happening, a lot of talk of Bruce Lee’s portrayal in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood came back into the limelight. Not to go into it, I watched the movie, I’ve listened to both sides, and truth be told, seeing how he was handled really sucked. Now in Ip Man 4’s case, Lee is shown to be more human, and Chan really brought him to life. And what I took from CD’s video was that you still need your actor to perform so they feel alive. And he’s pulled off a great performance even without needing to resort to CG. However, I still wanted to see what it’d be like if they took the DF approach. Could I use my VFX knowledge to perform a good deepfake?
And what if Bruce Lee was here today to play himself in Ip Man 4? - PN

Danny Chan was born to play this part, l have seen so many Bruce lee lookalikes over so many years but Danny is the only one in my opinion is the closest to Bruce. Shannon Lee did the right thing to have Danny play her father in The Legend of Bruce Lee. I hope he continues to carry the torch for Bruce lee.

For the life of me I cannot convince myself that his is anything close to Bruce Lee, even with the deepfake face... The performance is so off, so opposite of Bruce Lee... I just see a completely different person... Limp and soft, no charisma... Lacking everything Bruce had a lot of. Copying mannerisms without the right feeling is pointless... The movements should come from how the person feels... This actor is utterly fake , unconvincing in every movement, every look, the martial arts has none of the intense feeling that Bruce would convey...

Interesting!! The haircut I think interferes with totally pulling it off here, its what stands out a lot to me. Also just the athletic structure of Bruce that is missing and cannot be imitated by an actor, there is a type of body frame and natural built you can see by the eye that is designed for work, and even wrapped in a suit you can tell is not there. Fot example, Bruce's screentest he did ("My name is Lee, Bruce Lee. I am 24 years old") he is in a suit but you can tell he is built for practical work just by looking at the natural design of his body frame. Anyways this was still SUPER cool to see!! @SolDizZo

I think what I like the most about this is during the moves he looks a lot more relaxed which is soft-power output. Sure Bruce liked to flex and show off a lot of muscle tension, but when you're transmitting force into an opponent your muscles can't be fighting the direction of the force by being overly tense. I love Danny's performance even if I disagree with the direction of the movie at times, but he really does have a bit too much tension in his movements and it shows a lot in his face.
@ahverypro
@ahverypro 2 года назад
actually you're supposed to tense some muscles (including the fist) right before impact. if you don't, a lot of the energy that would've otherwise went into the target gets lost. i don't know if bruce lee ever said otherwise but that's the generally accepted practice across many effective martial arts today like muay thai
@SolDizZo
@SolDizZo 2 года назад
@@ahverypro you have to tense muscles to even initiate the motion. But once you have proper form feeding the force of your weight through your target, it’s actually ideal to relax your muscles for two reasons: 1: The first move you made is pure and complete in execution without antagonistic force rebounding into your own body. 2: You’re free and clear to initiate another move often with the same limb with more dynamic muscle engagement, more adaptation to the threat, and even more force for the first move with a tear-drop motion. So it’s not that you’re completely wrong in execution, it’s that your foundation should be relaxed states where the “tensing the fist right before impact” could instead represent a dynamic technique with a variety of optional outcomes, such as a “snake punch.”
@dillonnikolausmatteusl3075
@dillonnikolausmatteusl3075 2 года назад
You’re over complicating things, what Perry said wasn’t disagreement with you, he just said that it’s standard doctrine to tense certain parts of your body punches and kicks etc. before impact. e.g. It’s standard doctrine within Wing Chun/Ving Tsun to tighten your fists and wrists when you hyper extend your arms to land a punch right before impact. When you roundhouse with say your left leg you ground yourself better if you tense your right thigh and calf up, as well as angling in & locking up your right ankle, which enhances the power of the kick.
@SolDizZo
@SolDizZo 2 года назад
@@dillonnikolausmatteusl3075 right and I’m not going to pretend to argue that someone is completely wrong, etc. We all have what works for us, and it probably works extremely well, because of two major reasons: 1: Familiarity from hundreds of reps with many different kinds of opponents. 2: Being muscular and fit is steps above and ahead of 90% of the population and even offers an intimidation factor that can feed success even if it allows for bias. For instance the roundhouse kick you’re describing works in the way you described but for a specific purpose. In your example, the kick starts with the rotation of the hips and the weight transfer starts with the foot of your right leg on the ground. On impact your planted leg is tightest at the moment of impact. You tense the planted leg to stay stable. So let’s say you’re moving toward the target, your force in a predictable line, prepared at any point to stop one leg and snap the other in that kick. One problem I have with a focus on stability is if you get tackled by a second opponent you’re only choice is bringing the fight to the ground. But what if you could land the same powerful kick by using your opponent as a stabilizer, taking some weight and labor off of your right leg and forcing your opponent to carry it? Okay, the way I would describe the kick itself in a foundation of movement would be “anchoring” your joints from your hip down to your knee and finally your ankle. So technically at the moment of impact, each joint contributing to the strike is locked in relation to each other. Yes it requires some muscle tension to achieve this, but in my experience that’s not the same thing as the kind of muscularity in your actual thigh, calf, or foot at full or even half tension. So in my opinion leaving your thigh and calf tight is just a muscle exercise and not strictly useful for power output. And as I said to start with, it can be detrimental due to requiring more effort, tiring you throughout the course of a conflict, and by being tense you are taking some of the impact of your own strikes that could have just gone pretty much completely into your opponent. Example: If on impact you imagine flicking mud off of your foot, you’ll naturally relax those muscles while keeping your ankle anchored. Further, if the line drawn through your leg joints is parallel to the rest of your body’s natural orientation, that’s being in good form and good habits to prevent injury. So at each stage of motion your body can articulate good power without huge muscles. It’s nice to have muscles. My point is overall dynamic fitness is much more desirable for a fighter, and even if you can’t or won’t build muscle like your peers, you absolutely can punch above your weight class.

This is fantastic work! I wanted to say that first before I also note some of the jerks in facial movement early in the conversation piece and the overall cgi look on the background of the piece as it zooms out during conversations.

This was so wonderfully executed! Watching this took me back to my childhood and a time when I actually saw Bruce Lee films at the movie theater. But it makes me wonder.....I don't understand why Hollywood studios are not already employing these deepfake methods in films. I like Danny Chan, but why not have the real deal if it is possible? I think Hollywood is many years away from conceding and using this method in films. Even in films like Rogue One, where they had permission to use the likeness of key individuals, they still used the awful, cartoon-like, CGI even though this method was available at the time. Using deepfakes for films like this will not only help make the films more authentic looking, but would also help to revitalize interest in the individuals who are being recreated. In this case, introducing a new generation to Bruce Lee and his films! And not only that, but recreating people who have passed away could also help generate, and much-needed in some cases, funds for the estates of these individuals. If the family of a person gives their permission to use someone's likeness, then Hollywood should be doing this already. It is time to step away from the awful CGI that is being used and step up to deepfakes! Great video!

They've made a lot of strides with deepfakes even in the last couple of years. When Rogue One was made, deepfakes simply weren't as good, especially in the resolution department. Vfx companies have since started using the tech.
@RumbleFish69
@RumbleFish69 2 года назад
@@haysoos123 I must disagree with you. When Rogue One came out, there was a deep fake, and I'm sure it's still up, that was made shortly after its release. The Princess Leia deep fake they did was was fantastic. And yes, even though here have been many advances since, at the time Rogue one was released, what was being done in deep fakes was far superior to what the industry was using as a standard; the released deep fake proved that. It's the same with this Bruce Lee footage here. This advanced tech existed at the time this film was made, but like Rogue One, film companies, for whatever reason, will not use deep fakes. Just watch, no matter how great this gets, they will not use it! And, I would not be surprised if some industry insider later reveals that there's an unwritten code against using deep fakes. It might also be cheaper to recreate in CGI than to pay the family of a dead celeb for their true and actual likeness. The back to the future likeness lawsuit also changed the rules on how actors are being paid for their likeness, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
