I went to a Megadeth Rust in Peace anniversary tour show with Exodus and Testament. It took place in an empty warehouse only like 2000 people showed up due to a beef with the local Rock radio station, sound quality was absolutely atrocious. BEST CONCERT EVER!
Thats so funny. I love those terrible times that were actually the best because they were terrible. On a side note, i went to a festival and thought i was going to see testament but i misread and it was actually trivium.
@@JohnSmith-fx2mz they are. It was right before the In Waves album dropped so they played that in its entirety. So good. I'm still sad they have never played Built to fall live since then.
@@clownstopper It's not ugly. See: I denied it. So you can't say it's undeniable now :D. Some parts of this new game look decent, but a lot of things look like made of plastic and other parts of it are also very generic, without a hint of creativity. Even if you didn't like the graphics in the original game, they were at least pretty creative.
Yeah, but mechanically it doesn't really feel like hell. It feels like just another medieval earth realm strategy game. I'm missing things like a river of souls that you can tap into to get the souls resource, or a game mechanic where you earn prestige by torturing souls - which is kinda the purpose of hell and something I would expect from a ruler of hell. Missed opportunities.
I played the original Solium Infernum wayyyyyyy back in the day and I can't tell you how thrilled I am that it's being remade with a better UI. My only real gripe is that the playing area looked better in the version from ~15 years ago, it was much more like a game board and all of the units looked like demented chess pieces.
@@vincentmillions1 I'm not sure if it's still around, but it would be available from Cryptic Comet games if so (or just trying to reach out to Vic Davis). You'd need a much older version of Windows to play it, though.
I mentioned to them on the feedback how incledible the art was on the legions and praetors and how the rest of the game falls behind hard, I never played the original but it sounds like they had the art nailed down.
Agreed. The original board looked like a hexmap version of a Hieronymus Bosch painting. And 'demented chess pieces' is a great description of the unit markers; they looked hand crafted, carved from onyx or obsidian or some more dubious material. While the remake has a lot of talent in the visuals, it bothers me a bit that they have that cute-but-ironic CG movie look. Like Dreamworks does Satanism.
Want to point out the demo is live now. :> Also, you can change the relics you start with, so you modify the playstyle so to speak :9 And if you want to skip watching the other people's turn, just click on the "end turn" sphere in the corner, it will skip forward to the next person's turn. So you don't need to sit and watch the animations play. I'm definetly stoked for it as well :> Remember playing the old one, hope they've done some improvements where they can :D thank you for the video as always!
Loved the original version of this. The new versions is looking great too, definitely adding it to my wishlist. Do note that at least in the original attacking Pandemonium is one of the victory conditions - IIRC taking over Pandemonium declares war on EVERYONE and if you maintain control of Pandemonium and your stronghold long enough, you win the game. Essentially conquest/military victory.
I wouldn´t call Soilum Ingernum "Diablos Eternal Conflict as a game", since the Angelic Host isn´t a playable faction and everything revolves around the forces of Hell just tearing into each other. To me, Solium Infernum is closer to "The Great Game" between the Chaos Gods of Warhammer fame
In Diablo terms it's not so much the Eternal Conflict as it is the Sin War. Internal bickering, backstabbing and posturing. So, Y'know, just another Tuesday in Hell. 🤣
Too many rules and structure for it to be the Chaos Gods. Tzeentch would be constantly changing the landscape. All combat would empower Khorne. Nurgle would be infecting everything and Slaanesh would be having an orgy.
I had to screech my tires and reverse as I'm skipping through the video to hear splat's list of *"most metally bands to ever metal"* Rock on Splat : ) Truly a kindred spirit you are. Most brothery of all bros to ever bro. I salute you sir with the rock fist.
Came here looking for info on that. It reminds me of that game I played like 10 years ago. The old version youre talking about, was it named solium infernum too and is it still available somewhere?
@@vincentmillions1 The problem that it is not running in Windows 10. I could not make it work, but I still have it. I liked the art style of the old a lot.
To say I'm looking forward to this would be a massive understatements, I played the hell (pun indented) out of the original and this looks like a fine reiteration. Can't wait, hopefully I can catch Splattercat streaming this at some point.
@@mikerodgers7620 Ara histories untold is a take on CIV games with scaled buildings and real time auto battles. definitely keep on your radar if you are like me and prefer visual realism.
Wow, now that I see more of the game, I'm spotting bits of Armello's influence over it (particularly the prestige system). Which isn't a bad thing; when the last game you made is such a banger, and the next game you're making shares some mechanical themes, you're likely going to see elements bleed into it. Not that I've played the original Solium Infernum, so for all I know, Armello took from that rather than the other way around.
The devs have confirmed that Armello was in fact inspired by the original Solium Infernum. To be honest, I never made the connection until they said it, though it seems so obvious now. :D The original SI is their favorite game, so that means that being able to work on a remake like this is a big passion project for them and I think that definitely shows. This game will be glorious.
I’m glad Splat & I agree on the aesthetics! I’m abysmally novice at grand strategy games but the instant I saw the trailer for this game & found out about the premise I was determined to buy it anyway. I love media that is about the dynamics of the afterlife. Actually currently reading a book called God’s Demon that’s essentially exactly this.
The leader in the bottom left pointing his army at the enemy reminds me of Overlord where you point your minions at what you want them to wreck, nice UI detail. The game in general looks great, if a little warhammery.
I'm really not into RTS games, but this looks so "new" and the artwork is so "metal", I feel like I need to have this game in my collection. This game looks even more "metal" than Brutal Legend was.
This is not an RTS tho. It's turn based. The art is indeed awesome, but the game mechanics seem like they don't really back up the theme. It's all way too normal. I would've expected a more "hellish" economy where you gain prestige by actually torturing souls, instead of just going around and "killing" your way to the throne. (how does that even work? You can't really kill someone, if you're already in the afterlife.)
Okay - you got me! Might be because I'm a lifelong Diablo player, but it'd sit and play this all night. In the dark. Outside. With only a red candle lit. lol
I've never really gotten in to stuff like this, but this game seems super intriguing. It's definitely something I'd try out. I think I could get into it. There seems to be quite a few options with how you approach things and I like that.
Holy Shit. I played this with 5 other people in a play by mail campaign that lasted like 6 months back in college. All sorts of wheeling and dealing during lunch and between lectures. A fuckin blast. Cryptic Comet makes INCREDIBLE games and if anyone reads this Rock Paper Shotgun has some incredible writeups on their old games, like OG Solium and Armageddon Empires.
From the same team that early accessed Jumplight Odyssey, Then dropped it 6 months later when sales dropped. Hope there are not any issue that need fixing after launch because this is the only thing keeping the developer afloat, and odds are that long term support will be non-existent.
Testament, Kreator, Motorhead and Destruction were my ALL time favorite Metal bands when i was a HC Metalhead... back in the day 😁 still listen to them from time to time, Motorhead excluded, i can listen to them always!
I know you don't really read a lot of your comment, but I had to gripe about something. I recently discovered your channel and have watched a LOT of your videos in the past months. For some reason RU-vid just stopped recommending your stuff to me about 2 weeks ago. Even though I'm watching your stuff daily. 10 plus a day. They just refuse to put any of your stuff on my feed. I have to actively search your stuff now. why they hating on you? Oh yea. Update your playlists.
How could you leave out King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, on your metal of metal bands list? 🤘👹🤘 Overkill Horrorscope album Coma is a good example of METAL. The whole album is great!
"the vapors of my demon butt" splatt has done it again. also SPLATT! my californian compatriot. your psyker in EnterElysium's Dark Heresy campaign was the GOAT
Wow, this came out of left field. I still have the original on my hard drive. After watching this video, I discovered that Cryptic Comet's Armageddon Empires is on Steam. I played the crap out of that game some 15 years ago. It still has the old clunky interface, but man the game play is freaking awesome. I'd love to see you give that one a whirl, if you are prepared to endure the old-style controls.
The last mega death concert i was at was 15 years ago. First time i saw beer bottles tossed at them. When the singer started to talk on American politics.
I once bought a t shirt when I was in Costa Rica. It was a "fake". And when I wore it, my friend's friend said "isn't that a girl's shirt? I mean it isn't really specifically a girl's shirt, but I've only ever seen a girl wear it. It had Kermit and some Calvin Klein underwear. I just thought it was kinda funny. But I never wore it again. Haha. It just felt weird. So, on that note, Astaroth sounds an awful lot like Ashtoreth. And sure enough, it seems that Astaroth, the Demon Lord was indeed most likely named after Astarte /Ashtoreth, a Mediterranean region goddess dating back a few thousand years. Other names for her include Ishtar, Cybele and even Aphrodite and Venus are considered analogues. She is the goddess mother, the morning star. In germanic tradition, Oestarum and Oestre, origin of the name Easter which is the pagan celebration named after her which was instantiated into the catholic church during the Council of Nicea when the Roman emperor directed the religious magnates of the time to incorporate roman paganism into the growing Christian movement. Cybele was the name at the time that this happened and celebrations from her worship included venerating rabbits and eggs as symbols of fertility. The Vatican is actually built upon the ruins of one of the main temples for Cybele worship, marking the close relationship between the paganism of the time with the Christian faith that was spreading beyond the control of the Romans. They didn't care, as long as they all paid taxes. Soooooo.. Astaroth... Kind of a girl's name, isn't it? 😂😂😂
2:49 - I remember there was another 2D game many years ago with exactly the same beginning. Just can't remember the name of it. The art was quite rad. And gameplay was quite similar.
Actually, the war in hell idea comes from D&D, not diablo ! It's a setting / story. (Also fun fact: Warcraft's infernal machine ideas also come from there !) Diablo 1 was really based on D&D at its beginning and somehow it was perfect...
Metal bands that could make a soul blasting soundtrack for this: Fleshgod Apocalypse, Rotting Christ, and Septic Flesh. They're all fleshy and like to shred. Plus one has opera and what could possibly be more metal than that?
Astaroth! I remember his star from that Bedknobs and Broomsticks movie! :D Sure hope you can find a bunch of armor and Treguna mekoides trecorum satis dee it up! ^^
Splatter Cat is much better at being a conqueror? Same man, same. Heck that is my favorite playstyle in Age of Wonders 4, go around and conquer the Free Cities and destroy my Rivals and conquer their cities to (I also love Chosen Destroyers)
I've been waiting for this to come out since they announced they were remaking it. Played a few short games of the original but never got around to properly learning the ins and outs.
I think something may have happened with the audio, you mentioned the sound of the materials clinking in and the soundtrack, but I have not heard a single sound effect or any music from the game itself. Game looks really fun though, definitely going to keep an eye on it.
The Unliving game you reviewed, like 10 months ago, had an update called apex necromancy. From the trailer, it looks like it might fix the problems you talked about, but I haven't been able to find a single review of the game since the update came out. Was wondering if you could either do one or know someone who might have done a review of it since then.
In the eternal conflict, the demons of Hell undermine their own supremacy by voting for Communism. Heaven: "Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake."
This artstyle is very very similar to Dominik Meyer , i dont know if he did the art for this game, but he does stuff like this. You should check him out splat, youll like him
I'm a big fan of the previous game, so I'm quite happy. I have only one big complaint though, I don't like the archfiends designs. The legion, praetor, etc. arts are amazing, but these 3D models are not good in my opinion, looks low quality compared to the other arts. I think a same quality art would be better, just the picture, no 3D animation.
11:05 - The bit was dead from the start, Splat; "apostates" is pronounced Ah (like a dentist) or Uh---Pah (like a southerner calling for their father)---States.
it's a bit too slow. but the rest is petty dope, i think it deserves a bit more exploring to see the deep of the mechanics. not gonna lie the AI seemed a bit too easy,
Gahenna is a name often used in place of the word hell in the Bible by Jesus. Gahenna was a terrible place where people burned their trash and did child sacrifice. Just that that was interesting to see they used it in the game.
Metal isn't the music genre of Hell, Jazz is. Nothing is more wicked than the musical elements that make up JAZZ. Metal is just a puppy with a spiked collar because it's owner thinks it makes the dog look fierce. 😂
