I’m from the U.S. too, and I for 60+ years I have never understood why The area of Quebec south of the St. Lawrence and New Brunswick aren’t part of the U.S. . Those areas are so awkward being part of Canada, and I think it would’ve been better if they were part of the U.S. when we won the revolution. However, they’re very French, and the British (while Canada was still a colony) probably wouldn’t want us at Quebec City’s and Montreal’s doorstep.

Aside from some people in Vancouver which has a shit ton of ontarian immigrants who basically have dumber politics than california the only problem British Columbians have with Alberta are that Albertans really cannot drive for shit and that a loud minority of Albertans are completely rude tourists who get in the way of locals trying to go about their business. My prediction is that pragmatism would win and BC and Alberta would end up being close allies cooperating on economic and military matters. Most people in BC really dont care about politics either way which is actually our problem because those who do tend to be assholes. The current wave of sort of pseudo eastern liberalism is coming to an end though because their idiotic economic management has made stuff too expensive for locals there are a lot of people who really want something new and the way the NDP locked down locals while allowing near free access for foreigners has completely pissed people off because we are ultimately quite localist/local first people. I just hope we dont go too far in the other direction and develop a reputation for outright hostility to outsiders.

The whole "independence" concept General Knowledge talks about ... like this hasn't happened decades ago. Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of Canada separately from being Queen of the UK. She is also Queen of Australia, New Zealand etc. One monarch, many crowns. This goes back to the Statute of Westminster, 1931. The Commonwealth has evolved over quite some time since the days of the Empire. Multiple sovereign states now share the same monarch.

@@elementallynx493 I agree. Why would anyone want to deny the history of Ontario, or any other province that uses the ensign or the George cross? Everyone should be proud of their history and celebrate it, you are British settlers after all. Ontario was primarily settled by the British, be proud of that and enjoy your flag. I'm British, but I'm proud of Canada as a fully independent country that we helped create, and an ally and friend. Canadian provinces could go down the route of some other ex-British territories around the world and replace their flags with random new flags (that often look like a child created them, in my opinion). It seems to be only small insignificant territories or countries, and ones that are very self conscious, insecure, and anti-British that seem to need to do this. Canada is certainly perceived as a strong independent post colonial nation, and not anti-British. Canada doesn't need to tinker around with it's provincial flags to prove this, like some impoverished sub-Saharan African state. Be proud of what you are. You were British. You're now Canadian. Hey, from Canada here. Its a very interesting idea you tried to cover. unfortunately, I have to be a critic because there is a lot of misunderstanding, mostly in regards to national unity. Quebec has for a long time seriously considered separating... and they may do better if they did. There is some support for Alberta to join the USA, as some believe that their interests would align better. Ontario and people from Ontario (me) are not seen very well by anyone outside of Ontario. Tensions between Quebec and the western provinces, particularly Alberta, are mainly economic, cultural and political. Indeed, Alberta maintains that the high standard of living of Quebecers depends on equalization, to which it contributes largely for the benefit of Quebec. The fact that the official language of Quebec is French, that it is the only French-speaking province in North America, irritates the rest of the majority English-speaking country, although two official languages, English and French, are on the same footing. of equality thanks to the Official Languages Act of Canada, adopted by the government of Pierre-Elliot Trudeau in 1969. Western Canada considers itself to be governed by Prime Ministers from Quebec - such as Trudeau father and son, Mulroney , Chrétien - tend to favor Quebec, which is largely false. The disputes between Quebec and Ontario lie in the part which the Ontario capital, Toronto, monopolizes economically in relation to Quebec, thanks to the intervention of the federal government, which tends to favor Ontario in many areas. Hydro One, Ontario's state energy company, refuses, for example, to buy clean and cheaper electricity from Hydro-Québec.

One thing that many people don't know about Canada. There were and might still be laws in place to restrict inter provincial trade. In the late 80's and 90's we used to like Foster's beer but it wasn't available in Quebec. So friends of mine would go to Ontario, about 60km from Montreal to their ridiculous BEER STORE, and buy it in Hawkesbury or Cornwall Ont. To this day the Beer store still rules the beer industry in Ontario and its owned by the big breweries, Less so now as beer is available in some supermarkets and most liquor stores. But there still might be some products that are not legal to trade.

It's quite funny seeing someone who has no real background with canadian history give his take on it considering just how complex this whole thing is even for Québécois citizens. Your language division is not quite correct as it only takes into account native speakers. For instance, 94% of Québec speaks french, 50% is french/english bilingual. Around 100% of Ontario speaks english, 10% is bilingual. Part of new brunswick could join up with Québec considering their 33% of french speakers that are currently getting shafted.

I personally know a guy from Alberta, and he always goes on about how BC, AB, and SK should secede from Canada and form their own state. Another interesting development from this scenario would be the independence of First Nations without Canada. There are pockets of land throughout Canada variable in size that are separate jurisdictions. Although very small in size I think many would seek their sovereignty and independence as nations (some are self-governing already) or seek new agreements with the newfound nations. The treaties they have with Canada would no longer exist so then what. Very interesting scenario.

I might actually disagree with you on a need to change Ontario's flag cause it perfectly represents what Ontario is at it's core and what makes it different from the USA is that loyalty to Britain and the Commonwealth plus I actually kind of like the Canadian Red Ensign a bit more then the current maple leaf flag though that doesn't mean I don't like the maple leaf it's just I like the look of the Canadian shield a bit more. Too be fair though this is coming from a American loyalist who was born and still lives in Philadelphia ( Ironic isn't it XC ) so I'm a bit biased here but yeah I really wish I was living in Canada with how rough it's been here in the states lately.)

“There is no intense rivalry between them” Well... define intense. Assuming the division was a mutual agreement I don’t see any wars springing up but some provinces would definitely be closer than others; for example diplomatic relations between Alberta and Saskatchewan and Alberta and Quebec would be very different, and the Maritimes would be closer to each other than Newfoundland. I could see more “petty” skirmishes, minor border disputes, arguments over pipelines, that sort of thing (things we actually already have as provinces inside one country). I also don’t see PEI changing their name even if they became a republic, maybe BC but not PEI. Edit #2; Quebecian? The word you’re looking for is Québécois.

@@dmx9122 Yep, it has already been 25 years. Four decades since the first referendum. An entire generation has grown up never experiencing the fun of national unity being the main issue and the two provincial parties who are associated with the national unity debate got slammed in the last Quebec provincial election. Unless Canada breaks down somehow, I just don't see the conditions getting any more favourable for independence than they were in the mid-90s. They younger generations of Quebecers are more outwards looking and the province is more diverse now. The old folks who remember being treated as second class citizens are pretty old now and even their kids (my generation) are greying. The BQ will persist as a regional/protest party but more and more younger Quebecers have a dual sense of identity (kind of like EU citizens do). They don't think Canada is perfect or view it quite the same way as the rest of Canada but they have a less divided sense of connection than their elders and view it as positive on the whole As someone who grew up during the referendum era, it's the rhetoric out in Alberta that worries me. I recognize that kind of regional anger.
