There are some tasks that just don't pay as well as they should given the effort or tedium of doing them. Getting rid of bots would inflate the prices and make those tedious or unfun tasks actually worth doing for the average player.
We kind of need bots. Let's legitimate players not need to do things like fishing as often and let's the price of the food stay low. Jagex probably runs lots of bots and sells the gold they make, it's smart business

"Skilling makes good amount of money tbh".. thats false... i fished for 1 month straight, prob an average of 6 hours a day and make around 11m. I got 92 fishing in that time. The profit per hour of fishing sharks at 92 fishing is literally 90k an hour...
Grinding is large part of this game. It's an OLD SCHOOL game. This is not supposed to be a pay to win game but one where you put in some effort to accomplish goals and progress. There are plenty of pay to win games or other easy low skill games for millenials who want the participation trophy right at the start. IT would also reward those who are smarter in their approach to the game. How many times do you see someone powerleveling and dropping fish, ore, or wood right on the ground? Then when they want to cook, smith or make a fire they go to the Grand Exchange to buy the very materials they were throwing out. Without botting and plug in programs these players would be in trouble.
Yea. The worlds are not much for f2p these days. They encourage players to get membership these days so they could get more money lol. And after I bought membership for the first time, I never went back to f2p
Mass botter here. Sure they can be gone right now. Jagex allows botters because we are the majority of their revenue. Just for scale, we ran 800K accounts last year. I can tell you they allow botting for a fact.
i remember bot nuke day. there went from like 1000 players per world to like a hundred.it was weird but the best time in rs. you felt so free to do whatever you wanted

I remember the bot nuke... It was the first time I ever actually fished sharks. I remember thinking, "omg I'm m like 50k per inv..." I hope they do another nuke. As an iron man now, it would be nice to skill with fewer bots.
I remember that too I was a total noob and at the time I went back to killing blue dragons and actually made money without 5-10 bots per dragon... for a little while
I imagine that less raw materials ingame due to bots would make more people skill and in turn less people would be just PvMing at all times because 1. skilling would be decent gp and 2. supplies for said PvMing would be more expensive, in turn eventually PvM drops would also become more expensive but not insanely high since the demand wouldn't be so high either
Removing bots would make F2P a lot more viable, since a lot of raw materials that bots provide are obtainable in F2P. Low-level accounts level up and get best-in-slot gear faster, while maxing and getting truly full kits of rare gear would become much harder. It would make combat MUCH less profitable, since the food and potions needed are more expensive and the value of loot would be relatively less on the inflated GE.
I also think that skilling should have a rare drop table. Ok it sounds like a stupid idea but... Why should a player with combat stats in the 70's be able to get an ultra expensive/rare drop when players with higher skilling stats will never have that opportunity. For example: say a player is mining. And they hit the rdt the text could read: "whilst swinging your pick at the rock you notice an adventurers lost pickaxe" this could be for a dragon pickaxe and this could be done even with other items/skills such as "you seem to have pulled up the remains of an adventurer in your net" this could be for any item on the rdt whilst fishing. And the opportunity to roll on the rdt should be increased with the required skill level of the task. I think this would be a great idea to revive skilling and give skillers a similar sense of excitement that pvmrs get when bossing
it's an interesting idea but difference between skilling and pvm is you don't risk anything in skilling...in pvm you can die if you are not paying attention. I don't think items like dragon pickaxe should drop but if they did impliment it they could make new items that only skillers could get

It's disgusting how there are runescape-bot RU-vid channels out there that have tons of vocal support in the comments and more likes than dislikes. Botting is absolutely a problem, but I feel like a good chunk of that problem comes from a growing level of compliance within the community over bots that basically amounts to "oh, person X bots and doesn't get caught. I should bot too; otherwise I'm missing out". It's really problematic. Heck, even Mudkip took a neutral stance to bots in his mobile-release video back in January. The fact that the ethics of botting is controversial within this community is concerning.
If you let people cheat their way to success and make the chance of getting caught low.. well a ton of people are going to go for it. That's just how people are.
@Fireftw I agree, but it's gotten to the point where a good chunk of people in the community are either outright endorsing people who bot or remaining neutral, hence the reason why I mentioned those runescape botting RU-vid channels and Mudkip's January video. In my opinion, the bots themselves are just icing on the cake; the growing level of tolerance for bots is the biggest problem in my opinion. I mean, what motive does Jagex have to fight bots anymore if the community's going to tolerate/endorse botting?
Members can avoid many of the negatives to bottling as we have slot more gold making options and availability. Trying to convince friends to play the game is neigh impossible since they will start as F2P and give up pretty quickly once entering bot ridden worlds. Bots may not be a big deal to a lot of us since we are accustomed to the current economy. But they ruin F2P and make it difficult for the player base to grow.
I love Runescape Capitalism...the fact fact that supply and demand still operates in games like these and operate on free market principles is just facisinating.
Bots are synonymous with illegal immigrants. They drive wages down. Ban or deport them and real, legal players will have better opportunity to mske money skilling.
It's sad that the bot nuke took innocent accounts. I lost my membership account combat lv 81 due to "Botting". Jagex never gave it back, instead they ignore me.
The 2011 bot nuke wasn't some sort of software breakthrough. Someone from a major botting client leaked sold them accounts. That's what I've heard though, otherwise why wouldn't they keep geting banned after that?
I want less bots because I like socializing in this game. I feel like this is lost on the modern rs community through no fault of jagex as only the hardcore skillers remain. I guess that's what happens when a skill based mmo gets old though.

I have ti disagree with you partially. The impact of supply and demand would not change as drastically as you may think. With your oak log example, there would already still be a large supply in the game from the bots prior. Even if they were gone tomorrow it would take a little bit of time for price to adjust given that oak logs are not that essential of an item.
I think it is not quite correct to say raw materials will become more "expensive". I think its more accurate to say that prices will go back to normal/what they intended to be.

Very true, while the video was good, I didn't learn anything from it because anyone who actually plays the game and pays attention will notice prices crashing and large pockets of bots in choice locations. It's easy to assume that it would be the opposite if they were "nuked". The only interesting part would be interviews of osrs players asking how they feel about bots and why.
actually there isnt an easy way... many times over jagex stopped botting programs from effectively running in the game yet every single time the makers of those programs adapted the program to work around those roadblocks jagex put in place there is not much jagex can do to stop botting without negatively impacting the players at the same time such as random mini game events implementing a fatigue feature that would require players to rest and inputting a captia upon resting that bots wouldnt be able to get by but eventually they did and it only became a burden on the community.
Sometimes it's not only bots, I can tell you first hand I've spent about week at ammonite crabs getting my combat stats up and currently decided to take a break and train construction
Some people just don't want to take the time to customize their character. Besides after you have been playing for a few weeks you have a helm or wizards hat and have traded out your wardrobe.
Having played most of the time post rs2's been live, I'd say you hit the nail on the head. Granted, if bots were permanently crippled we'd see a rapid inflation, then decline, and slow increase over a few months to near the inflated prices. The fact that bots were able to return caused raw materials to plateau on their rise as the bots re-entered the structure, which sort of nulls removing the bots in genera per an economical perspective, though I can imagine the stress on the servers from bots alone definitely had an impact there. Being able to downsize the physical server space for any sort of maintenance or what have you had to have been much less of a headache.
Minor Economics Edit: This would not be an example of an inflation occuring, but a DEFLATION occuring. THe value of items and money goes up. The overall amount of money goes down. That is an example of Deflation good sir. Wonderful video nonetheless.
Inflation is the correct term here. The price of good and services increasing = inflation. Said another way, the buying power of a certain amount of gp is decreased.

You are assuming that prices would go down then? If there is less money in the game, how would it make any sense for the price of items to go up? In terms of the total money supply, it probably wouldn't have a huge percentage impact. In terms of resource availability it would have a massive impact (Supply and demand). The price of resources would skyrocket, aka inflation. Definition of inflation: "Inflation is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising and, consequently, the purchasing power of currency is falling." Please focus on "the purchasing power of currency is falling."
Inflation/Deflation and the price of goods here are sort of separate. You are forgetting factors. The value of the wealth goes up, therefore deflation is occurring. The reason you are trying to debate me here is because you are looking at the market effects overall. Yes, prices will actually be increased in the short term. Due to a lower supply, but the same demand overall. Once that supply evens out, the price WILL be lower, and as such your argument is null and void. Look at a market in the long term instead of a short term. Any collegiate economics or entrueprenuing class explains the effects of the list, and explains the overall state of the market. As always quit ignoring factors that you are disagreeing with. The value of the money goes up yes. Prices will short term. Stop trying to be intelligent when you do not know what you are talking about.

Prices will skyrocket in the short term if bots were to disappear. Like you say, same demand but lower supply. Eventually supply will increase somewhat to help meet the demand, but it will never achieve the same level as when bots were constantly pumping resources into the economy. Prices of all items would stabilize, but at a higher price than before the nuke. This is literally the exact definition of inflation. PS: I graduated from one of the top business schools in the country with degrees in finance and real estate.
Idk how it is currently but I remember the cancerous amount of blue dragon bots there were under Gu'tanoth a few years back. Most of them wore dragon med helms. Hated that bloody helmet ever since.. Also, I have a good memory of raw monkfish and yew logs being around 600 gp ea, aswell as raw sharks being around 1.1-1.2k ea. They were all good money-making methods back then. All destroyed due to cheaters ruining the economy.
Imagine cashing out your log stashes on those peak days... just to buy them back a little while later for a fraction of the price. Quality content, I think we've all made these assumptions about the economy but your research and break down of this topic is quality.

Well then basic economics would happen. There would be alot of supply and very little demand meaning prices of that item would go insanely low ruining the skill because it wouldnt be as profitable anymore. However that is a magic circle because bots would leave that skill because its no longer profitable meaning the prices would once again rise. Economy is very fluid and will always stabilise at one point.
As someone who actively plays BOTH games.. RS3 has very little compared to old school.. literally over 30-50 bots in one spot in multiple worlds... while rs3 has like 6-10 if that lol
There are people who gold farm on legit accounts, they're probably playing on a lot of different accounts at once but it's bot botting. Such a thing would actually make it way better for them.

You could have taken in mind that removing bots would also reduce the demand for many resources. But yeah, the reduction in demand would be lower than that in supply.
The game would 100% die being buried alive with the soil and dirt getting soaked with gasoline so that the oxygen inside burns faster and the heat allows jagex's eyeballs to scramble like eggs
Not everyone would quit. While I do enjoy the grand exchange, I also kinda miss the old economy where you actually had to trade with players for stuff and banks were like flea markets. The grand exchange feels just a little TOO convenient at times, not enough for me to wanna go iron, but enough for me to feel somewhat unsatisfied purchasing items for quests etc.
as much as i would love for that to happen they can't do that. Ip bans would ban legit players using the same ip. some people do play on public computers which is a stupid thing to do but it happens but ya. Ip bans will prob end up banning as many innocent players as it does with botted accounts.
Jagx would rather rake in tons of bot subscriptions than just a few real players. They'd have to shut down the game essentially, they like money more than making their game un-cheatable.

The quest bots are pretty limited in terms of what quests it does. And some of the Fire Cape bots are terrible. If I had to I would bot the Fight Caves and fight Jad myself.
Here is a fact for you. Everytime someone has some bots and a couple get banned and they have to buy membership again this is good for jagex and they know they need people botting buying memberships.
7:15 No, I don't think they would change much. They could buff a few of the older bosses, but I don't think they would buff already stellar money makers like Zulrah and slayer. A huge part of the player base wants skilling to be more profitable than it is since PvM is so much more profitable already. If bots disappear and skilling profit increases 3-fold that means a lot of players would switch to skilling, sure. But that would mean fewer people are doing slayer and bossing. Slayer profits are largely dependent on alching, so profits would stay the same, meaning the relative profits would drop. However, a boss like Zulrah that drops tons of supplies would likely see a profit increase with the lower amounts of resources in the game from other sources. All in all, profits would normalise a bit and a new equilibrium would get established. For someone who enjoys skilling, a bot free experience would be a dream come true. Imo, it's one of the most appealing aspects of ironman. As an ironman, you don't care if there are tons of bots ruining some aspects of the game. You get to experience RuneScape as it was intended.
I remember the very first Bot Nuke day... it was terrible, they accidentally banned so many innocent accounts (including myself). They soon fixed the problem and all those that were accidentally banned got their accounts back.
