My grandfather, and grandmother were both about 10 when the partition happened. Neither of them spoke much about it. Both of them were orphans, raised by missionaries. My grandfather told me one story. He used to have to take the train from Lahore, to Agra (Pakistan to India) for boarding school. He would pretend to be blind and sell tea on the trains so they would leave him alone. He told me he passed so many trains that had been burned filled with people, and he could never forget the smell.

During 65 war there were territorial changes . Indian soldiers were almost at Lahore when ceasefire was announced and US being US , asked both countries to pull back to their original borders . Only because its adorable ally Pakistan was at the losing end .

One correction Simon, The "Cold Start Doctrine" genesis lies in the 1987 Operation Brasstacks, conducted under the Indian Army COAS General KV Krishna Rao. It was put on hold in the 90s but in 2001 after Indian Parliament Terror Attack, India mobilized over 700k Troops along the International Border, but it took nearly 2 months to achieve the offensive posturing while Pakistan managed to mobilize 300k of its own troops. After Months of Skirmishes and Artillery Duels, India had to back down (under US Pressure). India's performance in the 2001-02 Border Standoff with Pakistan (codename: Operation Parakram), forced the Indian Armed Forces to re evaluate their strategy and restart the Cold Start Doctrine.

As a Pakistani, trust me we don't want a war on the contrary our survival is now dependent on our relations with India. If we aren't able to work things out with them our economic troubles will eventually break our country.

As much as the video was great, the reason for partition as always has been mis represented by western channels, indian founding fathers categorically rejected the idea that as pakistan was created on the basis of religion (which actually was the demand of a single party and person i.e jinnah) that what remained shall be a hindu state, india was founded as secular nation for all religions cultures, languages and castes. At the time of independence more muslims decided to live in india than move to pakistan, india still had a greater number pf muslims than pakistan till very recently when pakistan surpassed because of its higher birth ratio and as far as idea goes that religion was biggest problem and not culture, look what happened 24 years after that, bangladesh won its indenpendence after a bloody struggle as even they rejected the idea that a nation can be built solely on the concept of religion

We indians are not much worried about a war with Pakistan any more. They are dependent on IMF handouts and aid from China & the middle east to provide food of all things to its large populace. Given any form of war, India can sustain it economically for years where Pakistan will be decemated economically within a week. Its not about warheads, tanks, carriers, its just the difference in the respective economic conditions. Yes there will be a lot of losses in the Indian side , but Pakistan as a country would probably cease to exist. So, we dont sweat much about an Indo - Pak war anymore. I don't think that it is possible. India and Pakistan know their limits, so only possible thing is border skirmishes. Like before two years. There were some terorist who break in in India and attacked some military position. Then they backed to Pakistan. After that India sent some war planes to attack terrorist position. Pakistani Pvo shout down one plane and captured the pilot. Next day they backed him to India with no problem. This show that both countries have gentlemant agreement.

yes religion was a problem right after british raj but hindus never downgraded muslims in any ways, muslims took it personal. Not all of them but the extremists which were probably alot of them were highly against hindus and even formed alot of jihadist movements in kashmir and so on. Indus Water Treaty of 1960 didn't allocate waters equally. It allotted 80% of the basin's water to Pakistan and 20% to India. And this lopsided agreement is the only reason that Pakistan has sweared by it till now, because they know they aren't going to get anything better than this ever. And Indian dams that Pak claims are violating the agreement are not "dams" per se but "Run of the river" projects that ARE ALLOWED in the bare text of the treaty. So yes it's Pak being Pak when they cry on such things.

Too much hype is given on both country's nuclear weapons capabilities. Both countries have not tested enough to have the effect that the OP was talking about. Dooms day actually means a nuclear war between USA and Russia.

The Indian independence movement was largely comprised of socialists. The British were concerned that an independent India governed by socialists might form an alliance with the Soviet Union. They wanted to maintain some measure of control over the region. They found an ambisious British-educated, cigar-smoking, alcohol-drinking, dog-owning man to create the "Land of the Pure" by further stoking long-standing religious tensions, exacerbating the already volatile situation. The British hoped that this new nation would remain within their sphere of influence. They created pakistan in 1947. Pakistan signed their first treaty with the West in 1954.

British didn't want strong India so they partioned India

One more correction, there was no division between hindus and Muslims in 1900s but the British adopted the policy of divide and rule under which they purposely gave separate electorate for muslims instead of giving it based on the land area. This obviously created tensions, its like giving separate seats to ppl based on religion but not on merits and that was the seed for division. Sadly in India we still have this reserve system for ppl based on caste. So again British in the 1900s and US in the 2000s is the main reason for all the chaos and wars. Best and latest examples are US pushing Ukraine to join NATO and Brits making false promises to both jews and arabs causing Israeli arab wars and spreadout terrorism.
