In this video we explore what if Japan, like in much of 80s sci fi, became a dominant world power, avoiding its population crisis and economic stagnation, and even going on to surpass the US economically in the 1990s.

Interesting scenario, What if Latin America was full of rich High-Income Countries? What if the East African Federation was formed after the Cold War? What if Iran was still a Monarchy ruled by a Shah? What if China had a Colonial Empire? What if an Independent Sami country existed today? (Sapmi Confederation scenario) What if an Independent Guarani Kingdom existed today? What if the Maya Civilization unified OTL Mexico and Central America? (- League of Mayapan-dominated Mesomerica scenario) What if the Toltec Empire survived till today? What if Carthage industrialized? What if the Mughal Empire industrialized? What if Song Dynasty China industrialized? What if Afroasiatic Peoples/Languages never existed? What if Han Chinese people never existed at all? What if the North Sea didn't exist? What if Europe and China were hot deserts? What if Germanic peoples never existed? What if Neanderthals replaced Homo Sapiens as the only human species on Earth? (let's say by killing off most of them and assimilating the rest via interbreeding) What if Australia and the Arabian Peninsula were both Green? What if instead of proxy conflicts, only Wealth was used for gaining influence?

I really don't like the wording in this video because it's almost impossible for Japan to surpass the US as a world power. Even though they have a bigger economy they still wouldn't be the strongest country on earth. And even after they surpass the US Japan will just fall behind again in the 2000s the US just has too much going for them. If Japan ever wants to surpass the US as a world power they will need more than their current land. They don't have enough resources, land, and people to even rival the US.

The biggest problem with Japan was that they had to devalue their currency at the pinnacle of their economy via the Plaza Accord in order to not overstep the US. Also at this time, we were already off the gold standard and in the debt standard, therefore if the Yen was at parity or greater than the USD, you as japan hold roughly 2-3% of US Debt and then half the value of currency, while also having a 100% tariff tax on your values as well as USD sanction taxes like the ones used on Russia in present day. Your debt just doubled, and now your economy has gone to shit because all the money people borrowed has now been doubled WITH interest. Now your central bank has to artificially keep treasury bonds low so that the government doesn’t default as well as devalue your currency even more to allow for more exporting goods which makes your country’s GDP look great but your domestic market suffers. This is the story of japan, and Germany as well in regards to what the US did.

The US has so many resources I am sure we would be fine if we went isolationist, as long as it isn't complete and total North Korea style isolation. Sure, isolation isn't the best thing to do, but Canada and Mexico are still right there, and Latin America as a whole has a lot of resources. They're not that far away to not trade with. Yeah I do think that our economy would take a massive hit if all trade was ceased, but why is it unlikely or impossible for some other country, or likely, countries to take the place the US and its Navy had when it comes to trade? I would argue that isolationism is what made the US successful in the first place and our recent global entanglements have been horrible for us. If we pulled out of countries militarily it would be good for our budget since a good portion of our defense budget is spent on oversees bases, we could then spend that freed up money on infrastructure upgrades or something otherwise beneficially. Hell, I am sure we could halve our military budget if we were defending only the Homeland, given how the Second Amendment also exists. If the government forced large businesses who outsourced their jobs to third world countries, to employ Americans, on American soil, using American resources, and also forced them to pay their workers a better wage instead of taking massive bonuses; that will kickstart the revival of American industry, and if paired with massive infrastructure upgrades, it would likely be the very thing done to get America OUT of a economic depression. Let's not forget about how America is World Police and how isolation would completely change that. Cool scenario and great video but come on

@@dankpuffalous6260 Well, there is more to talk bad about the United States than not. The very foundations of this country is wrong and backwards. Sure our country may have good rivers or ports, but that doesn't matter when we don't even take care of them. Our canals are deteriorating, as is the rest of our infrastructure. That arable farmland is very quickly reducing because of suburban sprawl and stupid zoning laws. And the United States has brought more death, chaos and destruction than another country in the last 70 years. You cannot seriously believe that the US has brought peace to the world, they haven't. We love fighting Israel's wars. Don't be delusional, the United States deserves all the flak it gets. That doesn't stop me from telling Europeans off when they make fun of the US; I think only Americans should talk bad about the US. However those same Europeans always bring up good points. We aren't even the freest country, by far, we're number 17. We could be so much better, in so many ways, but we're so hyper individualistic, we don't have the political will to do so. More Americans are leaving to live in other countries now than ever, because our country is rotting. I love America, but I'm not brainwashed.

For Japan to be a superpower it would need to follow the British model of colonisation (Which is actually what it tried to do from the 1910s until WW2 to mixed results). That would never have been sustainable anyway. Japan would have been better off if it had managed to keep the southern half of Sakhalin and the Kuril Island (Having an indigenous source of petroleum always helps). But geographical superiority of the North American landmasses versus the Japanese archipelago is just difficult surmount. The Japanese islands are just not suitable as a place to establish a superpower in all fields. A Naval superpower, yes, but not much else.

I could easily a scenario of Japan keeping an American level of GDP per capita, and also birthrates and a system of legal immigration into some extent. This means their GDP could be doubled and they would be much stronger. That's enough to make your scenario a bit realistic, but in the real world I don't see any need in American decline. The US would still thrive and trade with Japan, but it could be cool if the Japanese built up a huge navy, got diplomatically closer to South Korea (apologizing for previous occupation and everything) and established their version of NATO to defend South Korea and Taiwan, and also a similar thing to the EU, and then gradually expanded it to Vietnam, the Philippines and other areas of South East Asia. All of that would still make Japan far stronger and rellevant, and the American would just be happy to have a fellow liberal superpower that works for the exact goal of standing uo to China that is America's biggest issue today in foreign policy. A huge win-win for everyone except for Chinese nationalists losing hope to ever get Taiwan.

Brazil. Equatorial Africa. Hispanic America, Southern Africa. Israel. And the Middle East Major enemies: narco states. Mafia states. Terrorist states. Space Independence movements. Martian resistance. Neo communists. Eco terrorist. Woke cultist states. Anti woke states. Anti corporate states. Rogue corporate states. Aliens. As an example for immigration there is the possibility the japanese corporations (most likely due to government pressure) might instead opt to bring in workers from usa, canada korea and europe instead of creating localized semi-autonomous branches trained by japanese employees. Japan avoids the lost decades, manages to successfully restructure it's economy and get rid of it's ghost companies etc etc, and remains a relevant but not overwhelming power in the world, allowing for other countries to also grow. It's birthrates decline much slower and it opens up for immigration like western europe did in the 90s and 2000s, allowing for it's population to decline less sharply and more sustainably. In my opinion, something like this could have happened if the Plaza Accords didn't happen, stopping the real estate bubble from forming.

3:00 ok but If you replace ethnic Japanese people with foreigners this isn't a story about Japan anymore. Its a story about India There's a reason why Japan has been so successful and its their culture. New immigrants into European countries are failing to adopt the nations culture, thus expecting Japan to expand is hard to believe because it was their culture and ethnicity that made them successful

Its about demographic, with a population of 120 mil and fertility rate of 1.3 there is no way Japan can become a superpower that's why immigration is needed. Immigration is also the reason why the US population keep increasing even though they only have 1.8 fertility rate

it makes no senses, before 1850, no one considers Japan as a successful nation, even medieval Korea didn't takes Japan as serious, except copying and modifying Chinese and Buddhist elements, has Japan created a civilization able to match up with China, India or Rome? ancient and medieval India was much more successful than Japan, other East Asian states are successful too, not because they have so-called Japanese culture, but including Japan, they keep thr Chinese Confucian values,

unlike Japan which is a ephemeral power which can't last, China is a multi-millennial power which has been equal of contemporary Roman empire but still exists today,

I feel Japan can rise again but US is in decline since 2011. Japan can jump start the age of colonies in Mars. - Start a city named Kakolu and this colony town is as big as Walt Disney World. - reduce prices in Japan on earth and make small towns alive again with industry until the US "lets just have nursing and hotels and called it a day" - re build Tokyo to look more futuristic. - Once Naruhito passes way make Princess Kako of Akishino Empress - either rise pay like Norway or reduce cost of living for more people to have more kids

Ever heard of national debt? Ever wonder why you don't hear much of Japan in the news? Ever wonder who the US owes so much debt to? Yeah...Japan IS a superpower, to anyone that pays attention or educates.
