Kingdom Hearts 2 took on a major evolution from KH1 within its combat system especially looking at it's new and improved camera system. However, what if we adjusted KH2s FOV to make it resemble the camera from the first game?

It's so interesting, cause in that first trailer from E3 2004, the camera appeared to be really close to Sora in the gameplay segments.

Did you know that in 2002 Disney of Italy released a KH magazine as a strategic guide and in the final part there was a short comic in which Sora and Riku went to "La Cité Des Cloches" way before Chain Of Memories was even a thing

Imagine that the camera changes between further away when doing combat or extreme traversal stuff (like flowmotion) and closer when no enemies are around and you are just walking around, exploring

Assuming it's a real in-game camera, it's possible the camera is so close in the KH4 trailer because Sora is looking up at the Darkside. A lot of 3rd person games will bring the camera in closer when looking up to prevent it from clipping through the ground.

That's why in DMC5 they give the ultimate camera customization option of setting your own camera distance. So it makes it so there's really no excuse for not being in control of the camera in action games nowadays.

When exploring worlds I like the more immersive feel of the KH1 style camera, but combat is no doubt better with the KH2 style camera. Imagine if they would of made FOV change depending on if you're in battle or not. Best of both worlds. (Edit: Though I'd prefer if something like that were togglable).

I love this videos talking about small details on kh1, tbh i would love if square took a step back and bring the enviroment to the spotlight, like interacting with the objects on wonderland room, or beating the trees to get some coconuts, even the ones that it was just for the sake of making the world seem alive, like the fireplace at the shop that you can lit, i feel like kh lost this, and at the current state of the game, kh3, with beautiful graphics, and a GIGANTIC map with great level design, I feel the small enviroment details would wrap it all up to form a masterpiece!

I feel like Dream Drop was a perfect balance blend, but it only made sense for that game because the level design was more enclosed and intimate than games like KH2 or BBS The screen size is definitely a factor, but there’s something about the way KH1 did it that really makes it stand out from all its successors and still be a unique fun time without feeling obsolete. The gameplay requires a bit more thoughtful approach.

omg finally someone who thinks about the camera the same way I do! I’d always hear people talk about the camera “issues” in KH1 and how they were fixed for the later games-but nobody ever mentioned how the worlds and characters feel a little bit smaller. I agree, even though the gameplay is smoother and more evolved, I do miss feeling more self-inserted into the story and fights. A little side note is that I feel the same trend has been happening in Sonic games too. The first 3D titles had a closer FOV and had many complaints about “fighting the camera”, so they kept pushing it back as they made more games, peaking with Sonic Frontiers. And while platforming and controlling Sonic’s movement have never been easier in that game, we lose a sense of speed by keeping everything so far away.

I'm pretty sure the camera in KH4 isn't going to be close to sora, it seems the heartless he's fighting in that is a lot more cinematic, as you'd imagine since it's reaction commands. In KH2 the camera can get pretty close to sora during some RCs so I imagine that's why the camera is much more close in the trailer. I reckon it's going to have a similar feel to KH3 in this sense.

the worlds in kh one also felt bigger cause there was more to do in them. it took longer than kh2 to travel cause it was heavy on platforming while in kh2 its mostly open areas with only a little elevation . out side of deep jungle and atlantus, i think the worlds are made better in kh1. combat is way better in kh2 for sure though. which is why kh3 is my favorite kingdom hearts game. it takes the level designs from the other 2 numbered titles and a bit from bbs and ddd and put it all in one game. the combat and traversal is great with actual level design that has you interact with the world.

I definitely agree, but Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts III made the huge mistake of giving the player too much power in traversal right away. Flowmotion abilities and the power to run up walls feel like end-game abilities to me. Having them right away feels a little bit hollow. It would be a lot more satisfying to me being more constricted in where you could go only to become more powerful and find hidden secrets through challenge. Edit: Well, it's not a HUGE mistake, but I do think that it was a bit much.

The KH1 camera made me feel claustrophobic for real. Pretty much the reason why I kept dying to Riku-Ansem in the original PS2 version.

a few RPGs have taken note of stuff like this and done a bit of both. (i.e. camera gets further away when you draw your weapon) there's a skyrim mod which does the same.

I wouldn't rely too much on what was shown in the KHIV'S trailer as it isn't indicative of what the FOV would end up being when it releases. After all, it's just a demonstration.

I've been wanting to see KH1's Close Camera on KH2 for a long time. You're right. With the upclose view, the combat looks more intense, the world looks bigger, and the small details like environment and the action are much more visible. Something that probably should've been a portion of mentioning was the fact that people probably were still rocking with the 4 by 3 CRT tv's, the footage for the most part is very widescreen friendly and even the PSP had that improvement. Nonetheless I feel as though it coincidentally was something that helped in favor of the Devs as KH1 Sora being a kid, you had your Mario platforming moments, your Zelda Puzzle moments with collectables, and whatever else might've been trendy around the time. But with KH2 Sora is still young but obviously more old enough to not fit his old clothes anymore. He has more awareness and focus to what's going on around him as well as a literal wider view of his surroundings. A lot was changed from KH 1 to 2 and even with it the games felt like a natural evolution of growth for the character, so considering the wackiness and probably more safer decisions made in KH1, with KH2...they truly held nothing back and if I remember correctly I feel as though the DS games kind of went in the between both games before it as a balance. But even those games managed to do some amazing stuff for a handheld title with one having FMV's with banging music...and Ice cream, as the other one was basically a remake of a cell phone game. I honestly miss that kind of effort in video games, especially given how outlandish of an idea for this series was but it definitely worked out in the end

I think a version of this mod where you have the closer camera angle during exploration (blue menu) and the normal KH2 camera angle during combat (yellow menu) would be the best of both worlds and is something I would consider actually replaying the game for. And as @doxcyDreamer said it would fit the feeling of TR to have the closer camera all the time.

I remember when i first began playing KH2, I was wow'd at how modern the graphics felt when I began playing in Twilight Town, thanks to that awesome FOV ..But well, I was a bit more disappointed when I got to the other worlds and the level design wasn't hitting nearly as big or good looking as the first World did, suddenly everything felt claustrophobic I feel most of the levels models in KH2 were first built around KH1's camera but then they figured it was best to expand the FOV, but suddenly the areas felt too small once they did and they never corrected it (Beast's Castle and Halloween Town especially feel super small) I think Dream Drop HD with its larger levels definitely took better advantage of this FOV camera, Sora feels too large compared to how small the worlds (and heartless) are in KH2

Imagine if they made it so where you have a closer camera during exploration, to maintain the feeling of the worlds being big, but a wider camera with a bigger FOV upon entering combat so that the action is still clear and readable. I'm kinda surprised they've never experimented with this, it sounds like it'd be the best of both worlds

This is actually fascinating to consider because I'm reminded of FF7 Remake vs Rebirth's camera differences. Worth noting that both games have different camera distances for general exploration vs combat. But I always preferred FF7 Remake's closer camera during the majority of the game, where it then gets pulled back a bit for combat. Wish Rebirth gave us close camera options like that. I think KH4 will probably take a lot of quality of life choices that the FF7 games brought and repurpose them. Fingers crossed, anyway.

This could lead to a new project called Kingdom Hearts: Resurrection of Memories, a ground up remake of the original Kingdom Hearts. Imagine Wonderland from KH1 in Unreal Engine 5.

I think they brought back the KH1 FOV for Re:CoM, it looks very much the same. The problem with that KH2 fov mod is that I think the camera is a bit too high.

Luckly for us,today we have mods to put Birth by Sleep's camera into KH1. Aside from that,there're places in KH2 in which the KH1's camera would have been more practical as you have bigger rooms with enemies on the other side and thanks to the camera also been far from Sora,you are left vulnerable to the enemies because you think the enemy is near but in reality you didn't reach it.

Another example of a change like this happening is with the original God of War games very far away camera position to complement the gameplay and showcase the titanic scales of greek mythology vs 2018 God of War, where the camera is very tight and up close to Kratos to complement the much more personal and intimate storytelling, but also adds to the brutality and pushiness of the combat

I know I’m in the minority, but I like KH1’s controls because I use the right stick to select magic and items. KH2 onward makes you rely on either using only shortcut commands or growing a third hand to use the D-pad. In other words, I consider KH2 a devolution toward “hit enemy till dead”.

Very interesting! That must be one of the reasons why KH1 still feels so special compared to the other games. Please make a follow-up video in which you show the opposite: KH2 Camera FOV in KH1. (if it's even possible of course, technically it should be, but I am not into the KH modding scene) I also appreciate FF7 Remake/Rebirth in that regard. While exploring the camera is closer, and in combat the camera zooms out. That would be a great way to do the camera for Kingdom Hearts too.

It should be dynamic. Close when it needs to be. Far away when it needs to be. Tilting up, tilting down… just like in cgi.

KH1 Camera is so intimate as you said and I feel the game is more cozy and heartfelt because of it. 2s combat is still way too good though.

That actually happens to a degree in 0.2 Fragmentary Passage, but I guess they decided to cut it for the final release of Kingdom Hearts III.

The FOV on DDD for 3ds isn't actually that close

I think it would be better Square and any other company to just simply allow the player to select the Field Of View of their preference.... I guess is "Ok" for some games to don't have this option like a terror/horror game like Dead Space... but for games like Kingdom Hearts is should be an option. 😕

Ngl i actually much prefer the closer up kh1 camera, it feels more immersive in my opinion, it feels a lil far away from the action being further away, a dynamic camera would be bedt of both worlds in my opinion but i always prefered kh1s closer camera
