Kingdom Hearts has been alive and well for over 20 years now spanning a numerous amount of instalments. However the past decade of the franchise has been relatively quiet compared to its first 10 years.

Square Enix has the Capcom syndrome of "too many franchises to manage", which means there's not enough time to prepare each franchise properly, unfortunately... Especially when it comes to scheduling releases. Mix that with a generation leap in terms of technology and you've got an explosive cocktail for killing franchises. And if you add that with a big corporation like Disney (it's certainly not a happy time for them right now XD) which watches everything and imposes its choices on you.... It's hard to be a developer in such a context.

@@khalilanarchy Hm? I really don't think Nintendo is the main reason for this shift in the game industry. And Nintendo, while they have changed in a lot of ways during the Switch era, are still pretty faithful to their practices during the 00's. HD development is known for being incredibly labor-intensive and that drives up cost significantly as the ceiling for computing power rises higher and higher. Nintendo while being at at an all-time high is also catering to some of their more niche franchises i.e., Metroid, Endless Ocean, Advance Wars, etc. You're right that their production has slowed down, but that's for good reason, and they do try to get to some of their other IP's when they can. Compare now to the Wii U era where there wasn't a new Metroid, where there was only a single Xenoblade, and there wasn't even a mainline Fire Emblem on the console. Not to mention no form of F-Zero, a poorly thought out Star Fox, and no Animal Crossing. The only thing that saved them was that the 3DS was far more manageable on the developers and thus could be experimented on more than the Wii U. This is where we had Pokemon, Fire Emblem, a new Kid Icarus, and loads of third-party support. Actually, that's another reason, third-party developers are often too small to compete with AAA games. Where in the 00's the difference between AAA games and titles by smaller studios wasn't too noticeable, it is immediately apparent now. Look at how lacking in support the PS5 and XBox Series is. And yet so many indies and smaller scale studios still flock to the Switch.
@Saturn537
@Saturn537 3 месяца назад
This is partly sort of an unfortunate side effect of handhelds in gaming not really being a thing anymore. I'm sure many fanbases of different franchises long for the days when we'd get mainline games and spinoffs on home consoles, but then we'd get all these spinoffs on GBA, DS, PSP, and 3DS. Nowadays, handhelds aren't really a thing anymore, and there's no place for those handheld spinoffs. And nowadays mobile games kind of serve that purpose, but they're not as satisfying as console games. (Although this is changing with games like Genshin Impact and Kingdom Hearts Missing Link.) And this is one of tgose things were if you don’t like it, the industry sort of goes back to you and goes "Well, accept the change, and live with it."
@danquaza9275
@danquaza9275 3 месяца назад
Agreed, all of the spin-off games we got over the years were tied to whatever handheld was popular at the time. BBS was the psp, Dream Drop was the 3Ds, recom was the Gameboy. And that made a lot of sense. Main titles on PlayStation, spin offs on handhelds… but now with there being no official handhelds in the market, making a “smaller budget” game for the ps5 would be a risk, and even a smaller budget game is still going to cost big big money in 2024. So where do you put your time? Into Mobile Phone games, which can be developed for very very little money, and have the potential to make the most out of it with Gacha elements and stamina based playtime. It’s really sad really because if you ask me, some of the best KH content came from the spin-off games. I have replayed BBS and Dream Drop more than the main series, hell I’m currently helping my niece beat Dream Drop on her 3ds I bought her for Christmas. So yea it definitely is unfortunate as dedicated fans to see where it has gone

I'd rather they use an older engine if it meant we got games faster. I also hate the trend of Square making mobile games and having no intention of preserving them properly. The countless hours people spent of KHUX is lost to time. There will never be a time like KH1 - KH3D where a new KH game was coming out every other year or two. Waiting 5+ years for so many plot ends to be tied up and ultimately probably not be resolved or just resolved in a disappointing way just sucks. Nomura is not getting any younger and I can't imagine the series in anyone else's vision. The man needs to finish KH before he dies/retires. Being that KH3 was released 5+ years ago makes me think a lot about how much still needs to be answered.

Its conflicting honestly, because on one hand, yeah, it'll be 6 years on January since KH3 came out, but on the other hand, I still remember the feeling of how long it took for KH2 to come out after KH1, and I even knew CoM was a thing at the time I just never got to pick it up. That was only a 3-year time period and it still felt like an eternity when I was a kid. On the other hand, it does still feel like an eternity, the only difference now is I'm a full-grown adult and even though it takes longer, it still feels relatively the same because of how fast time seems to slip by now. Like, damn, Zelda TotK was also 6 years between it and BotW but now that it's out it feels like it's been out longer than it currently has. Same with FFVIIR parts 1 and 2. I'm pretty patient nowadays but it does sting a bit more when you take into account how much those series mean to you and how long the wait feels, KH especially for me, so I'm definitely still waiting patiently, by all means I want more than anything to have a KH game finally be on as much par/potentially beat the utterly renowned quality that KH2 had back in the day, but man, give us s o m e t h i n g as far as news goes please.

I think it's a combination of the factors that you mentioned, as well as some we probably don't realize from the outside looking in. One of those things I believe is the transition of mobile gaming to smartphones from handheld devices that were designed specifically for gaming. I think having buttons, triggers, analogs, etc. is an important part of the experience vs just tapping on a smartphone. I'm sure it also affects, or more specifically limits, the devs gameplay design too. Playing games on my phone doesn't feel as satisfying as it used to on GB and DS, which is probably why I don't do much mobile gaming unless it's card based or something similar. I do agree that the early 2000's was the peak of KH content as of now, even from an overall standpoint with KH2 being the gold standard for quality, and then having all the other titles supporting it. I also definitely wouldn't mind having more KH content, but it has to makes sense and be executed properly (likely more investment from Square in personnel, etc). My central concern is that it could, in one or more ways, affect the development of the main titles - whether that be time, quality, etc. because efforts are being focused elsewhere. I don't currently think the team behind KH can handle producing a side project while working on a main title, I personally don't want a low-effort game for the sake of just having content OR if it could have an impact on main titles, nor do I feel like most of us do. I'm fine waiting and getting less games of higher quality, better writing, better design, so on and so forth. If Square wants to invest and expand, cool. Otherwise I'd be worried for KH as a series. The landscape is so competitive now with AAA companies doing their best to impress and earn more fans and business, that I'm not sure many of them want to make risks like that. The dichotomy is interesting to say the least. I'll trust in Square whatever they decide to do until I'm proven wrong.

I guess due to the golden age of modding that surrounds KH3, I haven't felt so impatient for future titles. I would agree with the inclusion of more interim games were it not for the fact that they're rarely so interim. Unless plotted with them in mind I can't see it doing more than dragging the plot out. Though if they *did* make them properly out-of-the way, they're certainly not lacking for options. You could practically play the Union era on a loop with different characters, just don't try and tie them into the key players (so to speak) like what happened in the mobile.

My biggest hope is when the Lost Masters saga properly starts with KH4 they will be a little open to doing smaller scale titles to fill in the time. Likely leaving the phone games to cover the stories of the distant past and smaller console games to be side stories maybe no longer focused on Sora. Like they can focus on the Twilight Town gang, the Wayfinder Trio, I’ve been dying for a game that’s just Kairi centric where she’s learning from Aqua. Unfortunately we will not know until Missing-Link and 4 are out. But we can hope.

I think because of unnecessary stuff like that the releases of those type of games take so much longer than back then. I think they need to have more people working on a game at a time. If they're gonna spend a shit ton of money anyway, they might as well get enough people on it to pump it out in 2-3 years and then they can get that money back faster. It seems like a lot of development studios are hesitant to scale their teams to the size of the game. Having 50-60 people working on a game was realistic in the PS2, PS3 and even the beginning of the PS4 era, but the game files are colossal now and there's just too many details for teams less than 200-500 people to be on. The cool thing about this is that they would still be progressing faster through development, without the employees feeling rushed. I also think there's a problem with storytelling quality in the modern era, developers are spending too much time and effort on flashy effects and insane graphics and not enough on a story that really pulls you in. KH3 felt that way to me, too much craziness and not enough real human moments, which was what the early games truly excelled at. Nomura is a FANTASTIC storyteller when Disney and Square stay out of his way.

A publisher like SE has hundreds of employees working on a number of titles at a time. For a major title, usually there are large dedicated teams working on the core of a game who are supplemented as needed by a combination of in-house "floaters", resource re-allocations when other projects are finished, and 3rd party contractors. I would not be surprised if we saw some steam pick up on KHIV now that FFVII Rebirth has come out, for example- that was surely a massive project that will see extra resources reassigned to something else while the next installment is being planned.

The problem is on both sides and the console, a new console comes out and to show how good it is they create games that use the graphics, in turn some of the gamers expect good graphics, it can be seen with pokemon on switch (pre-legengs A-Z as of now), people trash the games for having "GameCube" graphics, imagine they went with it so they can have smoother development, they would still trash it. I knew someone who started with kh3 only because the older titles had "ps2" graphics.

Yakuza fan here! So according to multiple interviews, they RGG studios has 2 teams and they work on the Yakuza titles simultaneously. They have an A team for the main story and the B team for side content. They also just straight up reuse a lot of assets. Pretty much every game has the Kamurocho map and then with each new entry they'll either add another map or reuse a map from an earlier title and modify it slightly. Square Enix cares way more about graphics and unique animations than RGG does. They also have to create textures unique to every world and Disney keeps switching up which worlds are included. SE should be rereleasing older titles of Kingdom Hearts a la Crisis Core Reunion. Put KH3 assets and textures over KH1 and throw the animations into unreal engine. RGG also did this with Ishin to great success. People love remakes even if it's still using old animations.

Honestly, I'd rather wait. Putting aside how I feel about the portable games after KH2, if we can get mainline games of the same quality and scale as the console titles, the wait will be worth it. Even with how divisive KH3 is, it was better than what we had gotten all that decade.

The only game developer who often does yearly releases for their games depending on how you look at it is outright games from the UK who make a lot of license games such as paw patrol, bluey, my little pony, jumanji alongside many more but they seem to pump out yearly releases for most of these series and I assume it’s because they’re made on a cheaper budget. Which makes the most sense to me. I just wanted to put it out there.

I hope now with them having their assets done in the unreal engine after 3’s change from the kingdom shader is going to be smoother. It has been five years but I’m wondering if this could be because Nomura is being pulled from all sides. Some part of me also is starting to assume that maybe time was taken to also plan out this saga a lot more than the first. He’s clearly influenced by his past versus 13 work and it seems this realization that he can out his original vision into KH is gonna change the trajectory of the story in ways he didn’t think of before.

I'm playing KH II again (for the 1000th time) and I still fall in love with it - and the series - every time I play it. There is just something about playing the early games that keeps me coming back. Which is a crazy thing to think, considering that these games were much shorter than III. It's not just the fact that releases take while to come out. It's also that the franchise insists on spreading itself so cover every possible medium in media as opposed to just staying true to what made it great. Being a console game. The only thing about *Missing Link* that I am looking forward to is the story which, unfortunately, is going to be important to the franchise as a whole. I say unfortunate because I the greatest and weakest part of Kingdom Hearts *IS* the story. It's far too convoluted to be spread apart so many different forms of media

Personally, I think the reason for the long delay is not technical things like game engine, but rather the story of the next games. KH is famous for having a very complex and convoluted story, to the point that sometimes it contradicts itself. And as someone who has a bit of experience with fiction writing, I can say that the more complex a story is, the harder it is to write properly. KH has since developed into a very big universe, and I don't think the developers want to risk destroying the whole franchise with a poorly developed game that ruins the whole story they have been carefully developing until now, even if it's not without flaws.

I think after KH4 games are going to come faster, because they will have so many assets that they wont be making many for newer games. I'm honestly okay with waiting even another year for KH4 if my prediction is right. But then again there's a chance that Nomura gets too ambitious yet again and we don't see another console/pc game in ages. In the meantime I've got plenty of games to play. I also have faith that KH4 will come late this year. Would be crazy if KH fans got both KH3 and 4 before Rockstar fans got GTA 6 lol.

Gaming seriously needs to bring back the AA games. The 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, and Chain of Memories. Days and Birth by Sleep have some of the best stories in the KH franchise and were released on the PSP and teeny-weeny GBA! games don't need to be these bloated AAA releases that take a ridiculous amount of time and money or these totally unfun mobile games that feel more like cheap knock-offs.

nah I'd rather wait for quality over quantity. If a game looks like dogcrap, being pumped out like crazy eg any obscure steam game franchise, its unplayable or has little to no replayability. Where as a game that has a lot of work put into it including scale then it has massive replayability and more fun to be had. I didnt hear people complaining about breath of the wild or skyrim and they were worth the wait. Seems more like a skill issue to not wanna play a 'big game' lol

Kingdom Hearts: Quest for Tuna Salad, or QTS, is about Sora's mom struggling to make a tuna salad sandwich for her kid, only to have to travel throughout several Disney worlds to try and find the raw ingredients for every part of the tuna, and meanwhile the whole time she's struggling against the Dark Tuna Master, who turns out to just be another flavor of Xehanort messing with her because she's Sora's mom. Cue her finally finishing, making the tuna salad sandwich. "Sora, dinner's ready! Come on down! Sora?" IT WAS A PREQUEL ALL ALONG

The problem is not that back in the first decade of the franchise we had a game for year but the fact that back then,we used to have sequels in less that two years with any franchise,not just KH. You say it,we had back then Jak 1 and then one year later,Jak 2. We all thought that in 2007 at latest we would have KH3. I bet that nobody play KH COM until the compilation,so naturally,nobody knew that Nomura would ended up streatching the Xehanort saga. We all thought that the games were going to be KH1,KH2 and KH3. This problem is because KH2 is call KH2 instead of I don't know KH (*Insert any subtitle you want*),so everyone assume that the next game would be KH3 because the games were numbered with the release of 2. Nomura could've avoid this by putting every game with a subtitle and KH1 wouldn't be KH1 but rather as Kingdom Hearts,without any subtitle,in the same way A New Hope was know as simple Star Wars until 1981 when the subtitle Episode IV A New Hope was added.

You know when comparing releases, I can’t help but find a lot of commonality between both Kingdom Hearts and Sonic. The amount of time in between releases changed around the 2012-2013 range. And just like that now the wait was around 5-6 years between new releases, in that time all we got were mobile phone games… we miss you Runners, god speed. I mean at least in Sonic’s case the mobile games were both quality and fun, seeing as they were developed by Sonic team… though the monetization scheme was more than enough to kill Runners so… I wonder what was happening in the industry on the Japanese side of things in that era which caused such a shift in focus to the mobile phone market… it was Fate/GO wasn’t it? That game makes so much money, yeah it had to be Fate/GO.

I would assume that a big part of why the game releases have slowed so considerably aside from the budgets is the density of the KH story. Is there more story to tell? Sure. But in a series that many people criticize for having convoluted lore, piling on might be a hard sell for the people funding it.

I understand where you’re coming from, and I’m an agreement here. I missed being fed yearly. And it’s not like all the games were particularly bad as result. Some were better than others sure as any big longer running franchise, but there was never an entry I genuinely thought was horrible. I missed the old engine too. Hopefully going into KH4 we’ll see a natural even better jump for the newer evolved visuals. I’m not a fan of waiting any longer between releases, but that doesn’t mean I want them rushed either. I missed the era of getting new entries 2 to 3 tops, and still be slam dunks. Pretty different times.

This absolutely needs to change, game devs can’t just increase scope year by year and have every title take longer and longer to produce. It can work for franchises like FF since each game is basically it’s own thing, but KH is a narrative driven franchise with an ongoing storyline. You can’t expect people to remain invested in your franchise when over the span of 10 years you only release two full entries into the franchise. And no, mobile games are not a good substitute as most of the playerbase will not play them. Square is running the risk of losing the casual market to other franchises, and the die hard fans will gradually lose interest as well, especially now that the story arc that kept people around has ended. By the time we get KH4, if it’s not Soon™, there’s a high likelihood that most of the fanbase will jump ship.

I believe the reason this happens is because Japanese culture requires agreement on a group level to make decisions often times. So the more successful a company becomes. The bigger the company gets. The harder it becomes to make decisions. Which makes games take longer to make. And then the technology changes as they develop. So they have to re-develop. I’m a software engineer. And it takes way longer to develop when you are a bigger company. Way way more hoops and agreement you have to go through to get things done

A lot of this issue also stems from the lack of a proper handheld system. The handhelds allowed developers to release small scale games that they could develop quickly. We do have the NS, but that still has decent hardware. If SE released an inferior game on that for $60, they’d be slammed for it. Phones have essentially replaced handhelds, so that explains their emphasis on those between mainline games.

Aside from KH and FF, this is why I love JRPG series in general. They cut corners with graphics and reuse assets all the time, so they can pump out sequels and continue an engaging story in a relatively quick real-time timeline. Now it's become a lifetime commitment to stay invested in certain franchises like KH! Luckily I sold my soul to Nomura decades ago, I'm locked in for life. 😆

Glad to always come back to your videos. I agree that the Union X lacked in gameplay and deserved proper console releases especially since they’re so integral to the overall lore. Actually, it is not the Graphics, nor the Engine that overall determines the Speed of the development or release, Especially with something very amazing like Unreal Engine. & Even Older Games took 2 - 4 years of planning ahead to conceptualize & create. Not to mention the Quantity of Team Staff who had to work around limitations. Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories took almost 2 years to release after the first game. Now there are even fewer Limitations, & More amazing worlds & possibilities to create. They were able to fill Kingdom Heart's 3 Worlds with real NPCs & Expanded worlds as contrast to what they were not able to do in Kingdom Hearts 2. So personally I think Square Enix focusing all of their teams & resources on Kingdom Hearts 4 is more ideal.
