What if Marvin Mobuto made it!? | Lore and Theory 

The one dude who fought the Flood, and didn't get infected. Shame Marvin wasn't made into a Spartan, he'd definitely be a perfect one with how far he got in the Library of all places while being constantly assaulted by Flood from every direction like they were coming out of the woodwork every step of the way.

There has only been a few people that Master Chief has been truly impressed by, Captain Keyes, Sgt Johnson, Commander Miranda Keyes, Dr. Halsey, and many a few others. but hearing that a simple, standard UNSC Marine with probably higher than average military training who single handily stormed the equivalent of the Beaches of Normandy; is quite impressive! The man honestly deserved a 21 gun salute!

If he survived, he'd probably be considered a Spartan in spirit, or similar.

Given how capable Mubuto was, it could be that he had the genetic traits to have been a Spartan-2 candidate; but just was either too old, too young, or part of the 225 that were not part of the final candidate selection. Regardless, he did possess great ability.

5:45 What if the Flood was released far earlier than we see in game? During Silent Cartographer, Keyes mentions on radio that they're 'en route to the objective', which is almost certainly the containment facility. We know from the book that he got that info from interrogating an Elite that had been part of a team shipping extra weapons there. Weapons are sent where they're needed, and if there were no humans in the area it had to be to fight either Flood or Sentinels as Covenant troops broke into the facility. Keyes learned about the facility from an Elite that had already been there and later was captured during the time between T&R and Silent Cartographer, so the Covenant could have broken in and released the Flood within hours of arrival on the ring. Further, we know that the Flood are capable of subtlety and cunning even in the Feral stage, as shown by their refusal to reveal themselves and engage 117, despite there being combat forms loose in the swamp when he got there. Here's what I think happened: The Covenant breaks into the containment facility, requests heavy weapons due to Sentinel presence. Covenant forces release the Flood and are completely consumed. 343 GS discovers the containment breach quickly, and finds Mabuto not long after his lifeboat lands. There is only a light Flood presence at the Library at that point. The Flood finds out via comms that Keyes is coming to the containment facility, so they pull back and let the humans into the facility unchallenged. By consuming the humans, they realize that these are the reclaimers the monitor needs to activate the ring, and scramble to reach the Index. The Covenant send a second team to the containment facility after communications is lost with the first; these are the panicked survivors 117 encounters on his way down later.They barely manage to reinforce at the Library in time and stop Mabuto. The Flood, knowing that Spark will try again, spring the same trap on 117 who they now know is the most capable human on the ring, and Spark's most likely next choice. After they fail to consume him in the facility, they begin swarming the Library, which is why it's a Flood infested hellhole when 117 goes through it. Mabuto probably had a much easier time of it until he got to the 4th Floor, when the Flood realized what was actually happening then swarmed him with everything they had available.

Poor old Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto. Absolute legend of a marine before death, takes one for the team. He better be on that memorial Pelican wing at Voi.

Mobuto was a badass to get as far he did (and in hindsight thankfully didn't...). Starting the exact same way the Master Chief did in that God-awful, Infamous Library area. John-117 even getting pushed to his limits by this point, I'm sure previous battles *before* encountering the Flood also adding to it, from the constant attacks. Less Flood to deal with aside as you say, it's impressive this marine nearly succeeded against such an *extremely dangerous* enemy, horribly outnumbered, and a foe he knew nothing about. Just imagine if this dude survived the events of Combat Evolved and become a SPARTAN-IV. ❤‍🔥

I love the fact he was a normal human. But do you think someone's made a theory that Mobuto was yet another Orion candidate?

If chief came back in between the time Mobuto grabbed the Index, with Cortana in the system you'd think that grabbing the Index would raise some notifications in the systems. I think she would have filled chief in and hold at the control room. When Mobuto and Spark show up there would be a standoff like in the cutscene except Mobuto falls in rank with the chief.

We found his body during a play through. Brothers and I speculated how a random Marine ended up in that corner. Not a marine infected form but a Dead Marine. Spark makes comments and we were impressed a Marine made it that far.

Interesting how a "what if" video gets posted the same day I have spent several hours thinking about how Halo Reach would have been been different if Six stayed to fire the warp drive and Jorge returned to Reach to finish the fight. Like from a gameplay standpoint in obviously made sense, but in universe with the Spartan III's intended battlefield use it probably would have made more sense for Six to stay behind.

Or a fourth option. Cause he is hard core, he gets Cortana out of the systems. Destroys the sentinels and meets up with the chief coming to retrieve Cortana and they both fight through the rest of the battle of installation 04

The flood is so smart i believe even brailess remnants could still have a modicum of transcendental knowledge that sparks from certain moments and works in tandem with the gravemind planning because this looks deliberate

Have you considered Spark didn't believe Marvin would make it when he was part way through and went to get someone else, that's why the sentinels don't turn up for a while. They are helping Marvin until he dies, then spark redeployed them to assist Chief. Just a hypothesis I've thought of.

You can actually find him in the level. There was a marine in a corner a little hidden.

I believe that as soon as the Food was released, all the heavy hitters (Pure Forms and possibly Juggernauts) would’ve immediately been sent to the Library to prevent retrieval of the Index. I would say that Mobuto may have met even more resistance than Chief did and unlike Chief wouldn’t be able to carry nearly as much ammunition or supplies. As brought up in another comment, the reason Mobuto died is because 343 pulled the Sentinels out, leaving him to be overwhelmed,

If I remember correctly, you can find the body of a marine on the library level. Both in the original release as well as the remaster. I'm not sure which came first, the game or the book. But it'd be interesting to hear the story behind his addition.

It's interesting to think and imagine a alternate Halo CE game where you play as Marvin. Fight through a nearly identical game up till you get to the control room after The Library. From there Cortana warns you about Halo and Spark but tells you that she has a spartan and with him the 3 of them can destroy the ring and the Flood!

The flood is a slept on book. Ghosts of Onyx and The Flood are the best halo books imo.

Imagine if in the library you can sometimes see gunfire towards the flood in the distance and maybe even acrosss from you in the circle area early in the level And sometimes when walking down hallways later on you see a bunch of dead flood before more jump from the ventilation and then before the area where he dies you see one last thing in the distance a grenade explosion in the same area where you find his body. So he blows himself up as a final effort against the flood

Cortana watched/knew what chief was doing at the library. As she was in the forerunner system she might have been aware of Mubuto attempting to get the index

Only other outcome I can really think of is if Chief made it back to the control room just in time and had the conversation with Cortana which by then Cortana could’ve noticed Marvin was getting the activation index which Cheif stops Marvin and go from there

I think it's more likely after Chief rescues the survivors he would have foehammer take him back to the control room to recover cortana and see if she figured out how to activate halo and a solution to the flood issue. Cortana being inside the control center would have figured out how Halo works and what you need to activate it. I think it's possible she was using her access of halo to track chief's movements to reach the activation index. She did spend the last few hours cooped up in there watching him and that thing get ready to slit their throats. So chances are she would have noticed Marvin Mobuto doing the same thing and depending on timing, Chief is either going to walk in on Mobuto teleporting in, waiting for Mobuto, or possibly walk in on a light bulb, Cortona, and a staff sergeant arguing and wonder 'what the fuck did i walk in on?' This actually reminded me on a what if story i been thinking up. What if captain keyes survived.

Due to timing I think it is worse than you think. It is quite possible the Marvin arrives before the Chief and Cortana even arrive at the control room in the first place. Or due to making an interesting story, Marvin and Spark arrive at the same time as Chief and Cortana

I always stop at the health pack after the final lift, and have my own private little mobuto moment. In my head that pack is where he fell

If Marvin was made into a spartan 2 (and assuming he doesn't have a bad hand of luck) he'd hands down be the best spartan considering what he managed to do naturally without any spartan augments. Hell, a Spartan 4 Marvin would've easily been at the top.

chief could have been on board the T&R when it was sabotaged and crashed back onto the rings surface. I doubt he'd have any reason to go and blow the autumns engines. Even if he found cortana had been killed. Maybe he'd try to shoot sparks monitor body which may or may not have been effective. But spark could just teleport away. At the end of the day I'd see chief boarding the T&R with the rest of the survivors and the Lt. making her choice to not break protocol and not bring that strange parasite back to earth/the inner colonies. Assuming spark didnt get the ring fired off first in some way

That is extremely wild to think about! It's almost as if the Master Chief was preordained to find and retrieve the index. My mind just exploded 👀🤯

I have this image of you, scripting this video, in your room. Arguing with yourself, out loud, saying "well if Chief was here, then this would've happened, but if he wasn't, then this is just one outcome, and I'll have to map out all of those outcomes, while focusing on the original. But if he was indeed there, then this is one possibility, with these other 3 as well." And just going on like that for hours 😂

It’s implied that the sergeant fought through the same difficulties as the cheif

I always thought Marvin started his treck through the Library before the Flood attacked the Library. That's why several doors are not working by the time MC got there, they were damaged in the Flood's attack after Marvin passed through. Meaning Marvin probably took a slow stroll through the Library and then died when the Flood first attacked.

What if noble 6 survived?

Yeah, I don't think chief would even make it as far as the pillar of autumn in time without cortana. She teleports him to get to keyes, and uses his suit to sabotage the rings firing equipment in two betrayals. But overall the theory is sound: bad news for everyone if he gets the index there due to the loss of cortana at the control room, as spark is too durable for the marine to damage him as he tries to purge our ai companion to get the ring firing.

I think it’s pretty obvious he’s another Orion project victim like Johnson (they even hold the same rank) and it explains how he would’ve made it through so much of the library and why he had to basically be pulverized due to the flood not being able to infect him and thus seeing the only option as just outright killing him (borine syndrome or whatever it was called)

Please, can someone clear something up that's been bugging me? Is there a legitimate reason given in the lore as to why Spark was able to teleport Chief out of the Library after acquiring the index, but never decided to teleport to its location first as well so that Chief could simply avoid the whole battle getting to it? Is it just a plot hole that we are supposed to ignore so that we have another mission to play or what? In the end, I'm fine with the mission, but still.

I dont think so. Cortana could easily have dealt with guilty spark because she would still end up with the index. All the other events still would have happened.

…who?? Edit: Ah. Edit Edit: I posit abother option. Mobuto being able to get through the Library would leave him exhausted. In the control room he would be safe, and might be given some respite by 343, who would see no rush at that point, and once Mobuto is recovered and Cortana is extracted: he then shows his mettle again and busts his way out, links up with Chief, and then acts as Chief’s P2 for the rest of his adventures until H3, when he and Johnson are able to get home and he’s promoted to Spartan IV.

Disagree completely.... 117 would've been picked up by Forehammer with the other marines. He would've told the remaining marines to prepare the base for a possible attack and to try to find a way off the ring while he went to go pick up Cortana, bumping into the lone marine in the process. Both Mubuto and 117 would escape the control room. Mubuto would go back to Alpha Base while John went on to complete the rest of the campaign until the last level, where he would have most likely had a large-ish strike team to complete what needed to be done. Meanwhile, instead of the rest of the human forces trying to take the truth and Reconsiliation off the ring and to Earth, they would've taken a fleet of dropships to take over a non-infected ship to go to Reach.
