Roush had such a weird year. Carl was a beast with 9 wins. Greg Biffle was meh most of the season, but turned up the wick in the first couple of races of the Chase. Matt Kenseth was very quiet and didn't do much for his standards. David Ragan had an uncharacteristically good season that is easily overlooked. And McMediocrity was doing McMediocrity things.
I thought David Ragan's career was going to take off from there and he'd join the other young drivers who were winning. It didn't work out that way, as 2009 and 2010 were very disappointing seasons from him.
Well I know Gordon would be champion in 1998 after looking at his season. Look at his last 20 races, dude made everyone else look like Xfinity drivers.
This just made Edwards fuel mileage win at Homestead more significant. Hell that 99 team won 2 of the final 3 races by outdoing everyone else on fuel mileage.
Really it was the Talladega wreck which could have been avoided that doomed him. Even with the part failure at Charlotte he still had a shot if he finished top 10 at Dega. He had finished top 5 in the other 8 chase races
That's because of how the points carry you over from round to round. It's not as bad as the Latford system, but it still enables someone to smash the field during the regular season then check out until the last race because of that massive buffer.
It's so interesting that sometimes drivers who weren't even the top 10 in the real standings make the final four. Thanks for making these videos! They're fun to watch!
In my perfect world, nascar would still use gen 4 cars or some modern improved variant with no stage racing. No playoffs or chase and for God's sake let them race below the yellow line. Just my view, I'll just keep watching 90s races.
I'm realizing after watching this that if they had the post race inspection rules in 2008 that they do now Dale Jr and Carl Edwards would have the same amount of career wins.
I'm rarely entertained when I see new videos in my subscriptions show up in my feed. I just see them in my recommended and I'm like "Yeah, cool, I'll get to it here in a bit." But I see this in my recommend and I audibly went: "Aw here we go!" and clicked. This series lives up to the hype. And you're pumping them out at a good pace, too. Keep up at this rate and finish out the series before you get too much time invested. The timing is right, the quality is good. Keep this up :)) Maybe another idea for a series is what if they had the chase in older years? Like early Modern Era seasons?
They technically didnt take The Las Vegas race Edwards won away from him, but they did dock him 100 points moving him from 1st to 7th in the standings, and when the chase rolled around he didnt get the 10 bonus points for that win. But he still technically got the win, and not dale jr
It's so interesting how this format was more rewarding for the top guys than the actual format run back then. Although, I think a mix of old and new formats with a 12 man, win and you're in Playoffs that has the same Playoff & stage point concept but no eliminations would be best for having to run well from the start and still rewarding the best drivers.
Personally I think most regular nascar fans dont care about the playoffs, at least 80s 90s and early 2000s fans. I just think it's too much and the old system was simple and rewarded consistancy. If they implemented a playoff system earlier I simply think it would've lead to the decline of nascar sooner. Just my opinion at least.
@@felixeur1276 exactly, I believe most race fans (myself included) want to see fast beatin-and-bangin racing with all these gimmicks. I dont think stage racing or the chase playoffs or any other new rule they add will add anything to it. It in my opinion detracts from the experience.
I remember the 2008 pheonix race being the one where it started on abc then at 730 and felt it was more important to show americas funniest home videos instead and moved the race to another channel
If it were Winston Cup points in this season, Carl Edwards would’ve won the championship by 16 points over Jimmie Johnson on a fuel strategy call despite failing post inspection at Las Vegas. Johnson would lose the title on the last lap of the season to Carl Edwards.
Dale Jr: DNFs out of two races, but by finishing 2nd in the final one he makes it into the next round. If this doesn't tell you that the system is broken I don't know what else will.
So Carl Edwards would've won his first title in 2008 in this format. Fascinating. If memory serves me correctly, he also won Homestead in 2010, while Johnson finished right behind him. In that case, assuming he was not eliminated before that, Edwards would be a 2-time Cup winner like Kenseth.
If edwards makes it to the round of 8 in 2010, he wins the championship the same way harvick did in 2014 (because he won at Phoenix and homestead in 2010). I'm calling it now, Edwards will win in 2010 in this scenario because in real life, he was 4th in points even before winning at Phoenix and Homestead.
I would do 10 or 12 drivers and no win and you're in. Seedings through how many points and last 2 spots wild card spots. The 4 drivers with the most points get first round bye.
Josh Sweeney then people would be wrecking each other for wins all the time, B and C grade teams go out of business, and gives teams/drivers that can’t win no reason to be there
