No, Sonic didn't try using the Chaos Emeralds to go back, mainly because whenever he's actually got his hands on them, he's fighting Eggman and they scatter right after. So, he's never had his hands on them for long enough when he's not in the middle of something else. Really sorry that I didn't make that clearer.
