The United States sent men to the moon in 1969. But what if in an alternate timeline, the Soviet Union beat them to the punch? Here is one scenario.

The thing is the British could of won the space race , (blue streak rocket) the British had the most advanced space Technology and could of put a man on the moon many years before the USA and ussr were even close , however due to bankruptcy it was between space or nukes and the country needed nukes to ensure protection

Family Gash not to toot my own horn, but I’m actually writing a story all about a situation similar to this. It’s called Nebula, and it is a space race answer to fallout game series. In this world, America decides not to go to The movie alone [would be too expensive for just one country, and communism is everyone’s problem], instead of deciding to appeal to the United Nations to pull together their resources for NASA. As a result, they are not only able to put Americans on the moon, but could use the extra funding to do as many things with space Age technology as possible. As the free nations of the world become more and more invested in the science of utilizing out of space for humanities survival, a large, intrepid, and ethnically diverse series of space stations are launched into space to find new planets to inhabit [although most of the stations were used by psychiatrists to experiment on how humanity could evolve as an interplanetary species. I.e. what would happen if one person had absolute power every year at random. How would these people abuse that power?]. In an unfortunate twist of fate, irate middle Eastern kingdoms take revenge on both sides of the cold war by nuking every capital they could afford to blow up[Both sides have been exploiting these countries for their oil deposits for rocket fuel. Eventually they lost their patience and declare jihad]. As the last space station leaves the planet earth in search of new planets to colonize, the astronauts have to look on in horror as they lose all connections to the planet earth. The game is set roughly 2000 years after earth has been all but forgotten, and you must deal with the new interplanetary empires and societies that have popped up in earths absence. Will you choose order, or chaos? How far are you willing to go to survive in this brave new world where the sky is not the limit? At home or far away, human nature is still human nature.

@Doctor699
@Doctor699 3 года назад
The Saturn V was built simple. 5 F1 engines in the first stage, 5 J1's in the second stage, and 1 J1 in the third stage. The Soviets decided to built the N1 the Kerbal way, and put 30 engines in their first stage. Then 8 in the second, and 4 in the third. Yes the N1 did get off the ground, but that kind of complexity was a time bomb. There were far too many things that could have gone wrong, and that did go wrong. Combustion instabilities, G shocks and that kind of thing. Had Sergei Korolev lived longer, who knows. Maybe the Soviets would have made it to the Moon even after the Americans, and we'd have an international Moon base now instead of the ISS.

Some interesting points in our timeline: - The designers of Sputnik 1 later (50 years later on anniversary) said that they had hoped that a Space Race would start from that launch. - Sergei Korolev was the chief engineer of Soviet Space Rocket Development. He died in 1966, so before the N1 rocket was completed. Many analysts consider had he not died, the Soviet Lunar Lander, which was also already designed, would be successfully launched by a successfully modified / working N1 rocket. - Isn't it funny that the "Space Race" is considered to be the ending after the Lunar landing? It in fact continued much later on, such as the Soviets constructing Mir Space Station, the American's designing Freedom Space Station to compete against it. Soviet Mir-2 plans and US Freedom Station plans were later combined to be what today is the ISS. - If JFK wasn't assassinated, he proposed plans, which the Soviet's didn't object to, have a joint lunar landing (like Apollo-Soyuz, but would've been earlier and much more cooperative on a larger scale). - The Soviet's monitored the Apollo mission, and thus sent a Luna mission so that (thinking if they can't land a man first, at least they can..) bring back Lunar rocks first, which they did. The US and the USSR later exchanged those Lunar rocks with each other, the one's grabbed by Luna and Apollo.

+Devon™ Ziegler - Sputnik was a joke accomplishment, as it only maintained an geocentric low Earth orbit for 3 months and emitted broadcast radio pulses from its four external radio antennae for 21 days. If America wanted to only do this, we would have done so much earlier. Explorer 1 science the shit out of that shinny craptraction, maintaining a geocentric Earth orbit, not a low Earth orbit, first spacecraft to detect the Van Allen radiation belt, returned data until its batteries were exhausted after nearly four months, and continued to remained in orbit until 1970. America didn't need to play the first game. NASA dropped the mic on those sorry Soviets...
@Allison-qk1ws
@Allison-qk1ws 8 лет назад
+Devon™ Ziegler You're absolutely right. The challenges of keeping people alive in space are incredibly difficult, as is the task of the return trip. You have to do insane mathematical equations concerning speed, fuel, how fast you land, the logistics of getting supplies into orbit, and many other difficult tasks in order to get a successful round trip to the moon.

That's actually a good point. But as revolutionary and numerous as the soviet accomplishments were, they became common practice (minus pictures of Venus). No other country has successfully landed a man on the moon, created and used a manned space shuttle, and explored the outer solar system and outside it. Now other counties have done a soft landing on mars, but that's not really common.

Your video would seem to have inspired the TV series, *For All Mankind.* I am not so certain that the Soviets reaching the Moon first would really have inspired us to greater efforts. I think it could just as easily have lead to a cancelling of the manned space program all together. If it did lead to bigger and better things though, that would not necessarily have been at the expense of the Space Shuttle. Multiple avenues might have been pursued. There could have been much more vigorous and sustained Lunar exploration, perhaps even a Lunar base. Multiple Skylab style space stations might have been launched. Multiple Skylab modules could have been docked together to form one or more much larger stations. Space Shuttles would have been very valuable in supplying such large orbiting labs, and conducting independent Earth orbital missions. We might even have gotten the originally planned fleet of ten instead of just four. I imagine there would have been a push to land on Mars as soon as possible, perhaps in the early '80s. That is, assuming we didn't just throw in the towel and give it all up.

NASA got a billion dollars more in it's budget this year than they asked for. They've had a manned Mars mission on the back burner for years now, and long ago figured out exactly what they need to be able to go. So now they can launch a targeted research program into just the kind of technologies that they need, and really get the ball rolling.
@obsolete_turtle622
@obsolete_turtle622 8 лет назад
+M.O.P. 3000 Money really doesn't make a difference. At our current technology it takes MONTHS to get to Mars. Then you have the problem of how to get that much food on the rocket, not even considering the fuel and other supplies needed. Also, how are you gonna protect the astronauts from the levels of radiation they'll be exposed to? We MIGHT get to Mars as humans, but certainly not by 2030.

Strangely, I think that all of humanity would have had benefitted from the Sovjets landing first on the moon. The budget of NASA would never have been cut down, instead, the efforts to also land on the moon and top the Sovjets, would have been increased. I think the US would have been able to land shortly afterwards on the moon, and top the Sovjet achievement by building a lunar base. Then the Sovjets build a bigger base. And before you can look, the moon is populated, lots of manned outposts and mining colonies by the late 70s, space tourism to the moon by the 80s. The next step: Mars. Human landing on Mars by the 90s. Colonization of Mars by the early 2000s. Technology in this timeline would be consequently waaayyyy ahead of our timeline, since all the new space technology developments would have lead to lots and lots of spin-off products in other areas, such as telecommunication, material science, etc. You woud not recognize the world of 2016 in this alternate timeline. It would be as in a sci-fi novel. But hey, instead we got facebook. Also not bad, hm? Sigh.

I think I have a better scenario: What if Czechoslovakia invaded the Weimar Republic when it was weak and pathetic? We had the number advantage over the Germans at the time. We had a massive chance of winning. The Entente would probably appreciate it.

FUN FACTS: - John F. Kennedy proposed to the USSR, and the USSR accepted, to jointly go to the moon together. However, after his assassination, his successor then canceled the deal that was to be made on Moon Cooperation. - While the first Apollo Mission was taking place, the Soviets were like "Oh shit, we gotta get something first from the moon", so they sent Luna 15 to collect Moon Rocks. This cooperation of sharing flight paths so the Apollo 11 and Luna 15 would not crash would lead to Sharing Moon Rocks collected by Armstrong and Aldrin and Luna 15, which would eventually lead to the Apollo-Soyuz Mission. - The Soviets already had already developed a Lunar Lander and had N1 Rocket designs. The Soviet Lunar Lander flew in Near Space. However, in 1966, Sergei Korolev, the lead and chief designer of all things space-related of the USSR, died in 1966 of Cancer, thus the slight modifications required for the N1 Rocket were never mathematically solved. Korolev died with the key. The project was decided to be cancelled after Apollo 11, and continue on the next space race. - The next space race happened 1 of 2. Space Station's Race went into development. The US had Skylab after the USSR had the Salyut 1-7, Almaz, and a Military Cannon Space Station fired from Space (not making this up). Then Mir-1 was constructed as the ISS is constructed today. The US was going to compete with its "Freedom Station" project, but was cancelled as well as Mir-2 was cancelled because of the Collapse of the USSR. As a result, Space Cooperation between Russia and the US allowed the US and Russia to combine Freedom Station Designs with Mir-2 (and let other countries have a piece of the cake and join in). China was denied, which led them to them building their own Space Station, the Tiangong Project. - In 2009, on the 50 year anniversary after the launch of Sputnik-1, the Designers behind the Satellite "Came out with their Secret", saying they were mostly developing it "in the hopes for the start of a Space Race, to progress Humanity". As we all know, every single thing progresses better in competition, not cooperation. Example in the next line. - In the mid 80's, after completing Buran, the USSR was to use Mir and Buran to service Cosmonauts, and started developing a program to send a person to Mars by 1999. This of course, was cancelled due to the country ceasing to exist in 1991. What would happen if Kennedy was never assassinated and the deal with the Soviets on Joint Lunar Development proceeded? I think SpaceX would not exist and would be useless, and Space Tourism Companies would open up, instead of that being Russia's job.

Yep can't walk on the surface of Venus but you could easily live in blimps high up. Blimps make living there easy, your still basically in a space ship. This and Venus being a lot closer than Mars it could have actually seen colonization in the 1990's if the space race continued.
@ericwood3709
@ericwood3709 7 лет назад
Caden Rolland *You're still ... I don't know about calling that "easy," but it's a hypothetical possibility. There's the matter of delivering personnel and supplies across that great distance, and that includes windows of opportunity due to Venus moving toward and away from us as it orbits the sun. That leaves the hazards of travel beyond earth orbit, something far from "easy" even today, let alone in the 90s, due to radiation and engineering hurdles to move people across that vast distance safely. Better be very careful upon arrival, too, since there's absolutely no option to land on the planet in case of an emergency.
@k1productions87
@k1productions87 7 лет назад
A manned Venus mission does not mean landing upon its surface. In fact, an Manned Venus Flyby mission was one of NASA's proposals for continued use of Apollo hardware beyond Lunar Landings. The launch would still take place on a Saturn V, but the difference is, instead of housing a landing module between the Apollo CSM and the S4B stage, there would be a docking node at the nose of the S4B. After the boost out of Earth's orbit, all excess fuel within the S4B would be vented. Possibly some kind of water-assisted "wash" afterward. Once the tanks were completely purged, they would serve has habitable workspace and living area for the crew, who would enter from the docking node (which the CSM would separate from, maneuver around and dock with, just as they would a Lunar Module). This is what was known as a "wet workshop", and was also the basis behind what would become Skylab. The combined CSM and S4B workshop would continue to Venus where they would make visual and scientific observations of the planet, but not park into Venus orbit. Instead its flyby path would itself become a slingshot maneuver to bring the Apollo workshop back toward Earth. Only when on the final approach to Earth would the CSM separate from the workshop, and use the SBS engine to either enter Earth orbit, or slow their approach to a safe re-entry. This plan was scrapped, along with numerous NASA plans beyond Apollo by Congress. The Shuttle almost met the same fate, but passed Congress by a single vote, and only on the condition that it be enlarged to meet requirements for Department of Defense payloads, and potentially be used to capture Soviet satellites (thankfully this did not happen).
@ericwood3709
@ericwood3709 7 лет назад
K1productions But there definitely wouldn't be much point in sending humans to another planet if not to land and stay long-term, though. It would be a lot more expensive than sending unmanned vehicles, and now such vehicles can accomplish a lot through automation and remote control. Apollo kind of made sense at the time, although in hindsight it would have been far wiser to wait and send unmanned missions instead. We could have returned samples and deposited retroreflectors and all of that without putting human lives at risk and spending all of that extra money.

Just because I never laugh or do comedy doesn't mean I'm stupid, it just means I don't have a sense of humor. I get jokes, but this joke was no where near funny, and it was rather annoying to see in the comment sections. Also, why are you stalking me? Edit: After you stalked me, I decided to counter-stalk you. It turns out you ARE around twelve years old, with a plane collection, and a comment saying "After September 2016, I might do a Minecraft Let's Play." I'm not sure if it's a joke, but either way, you're way too young to be on the internet.

Multi Colored Psychopath Wow, how did you guess I am 12? Also, I don't play CoD. I don't know this game. Yes, I have a plane collection, I am really going to do a Minecraft Let's Play after September if I get good grades on my annual test.

N1 did get of the ground. One did fall back to launchpad, but three got many km away from launchpad. But still all four first stages exploded.

There were a lot more things going against the Soviets, but the biggest one you missed was the most important one: Sergei Korolev, the "chief designer". He died in 1966 because a routine surgery went awry. It went awry because they couldn't intubate him due to injuries he sustained when he was tortured in the gulags in the 1930s. He was one of the victims of the Great Purge. In fact, he was in the gulags because he was betrayed by one of his rocketry rivals, fellow Ukrainian Valentin Glushko. Not to mention their lack of resources crippled their ability to test components of rockets before assembly, which is one of the big reasons the N-1 moon rocket was such a huge failure. That's also why so many Soviet rockets failed in the 1960s. Just in the Luna program, 13 of the first 16 attempts were launch failures. When they switched from the R-7 to Proton, they had launch failures in 5 of their first 6 attempts. In the Venera program to Venus, 6 of their first 10 attempts were launch failures.

Go watch For All Mankind because the major point of divergence for the shows timeline from ours is that korolev survives his surgery, but still due to state security is never made known to the West even as late as '83. There's a scene were he, somewhat sadly, says to a American astronaut " who am I? I am just Chief Designer."

I think the U.S. would have went to Mars on a manned space mission only to find oil there beneath the surface which would have rallied the establishment into funding space colonies to help mine the oil faster. Then they would look further to other possibly inhabited planets for their oil and the cycle would just keep repeating.

Oil's a fossil fuel, meaning it's made of ancient dead organisms, of which there are none of on Mars. At least, not to the extent of our knowledge.

Do a scenero where the USSR landed after the USA where did the 2 remaining N1s launched
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber 7 лет назад
You might find it interesting how close this was to actually happening. The N1 failed because several engines on the first stage catastrophically failed. There was nothing wrong with the design itself (except arguably the open interstage trusses). Also, in general, soviet rocketry technology was actually ahead of its time. They just didn't bother building massive engines like the F-1 used on the Saturn V because they found that clusters of smaller engines were more efficient and reliable - one engine out of 21 failing non-catastrophically means a much smaller loss of thrust than one engine out of five. You actually see a similar thing going on with SpaceX's Falcon 9 launch vehicle - the Falcon 9 has nine engines, but only really needs seven to reach orbit with a typical payload. Regarding what would happen, I'm pretty sure the next objective would either be putting a man on Mars, or establishing a permanently inhabited base on the Moon. The USSR beating the USA to the moon could have helped spur on even more technological developments throughout the world, with the USA constantly playing catch-up while the USSR continues to improve the efficiency of their own engines. Also, based on the USSR's seemingly much more casual attitude about the space race (they weren't upset about us beating them to the moon at all - they actually congratulated us.), by the time tensions between the USA and USSR finally eased they may have even been willing to help us catch up. All and all I think the Soviets had the right idea on space travel - treat it as exploration and the opportunity to learn more about the universe and not as yet another geopolitical Colosseum to posture in.
@antimatteranon

let's be honest, men are excellent at turning anything into a geopolitical colosseum. the new space race, the race for AI -- all that fancy shit now is being used for Cold War 2.0.
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber Год назад
@@antimatteranon Can't say much about AI development, but the new space race doesn't have much to do with geopolitics, it's just NASA and a bunch of private corporations competing for profit.

Here's what I imagine let's say Soviets land on the moon in April 1969 the first man on the moon puts the Soviet flag on the moon and another cosamunt jumps out right after first and of course they both have Russian names it's April 25 1969 then the Americans still land on the moon on July 20 1969 like in our timeline and Neil Armstrong is third man to step foot on the moon with buzz as the fourth then the Soviet Union lands on the moon again on August 5th 1969 with the first woman on the moon and another man cosamunt jumps out follow by her then the Soviet union has a few more successful mission to the moon until December 1969 after that they never go back to the moon what do you think the United States would do now also the US doesn't know the Soviet Union decided to stop going to the moon after that
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber Год назад
@@matthewfeliu791 I'd say it would lead to the same results as I previously stated. Even if the USSR didn't publicly state they were done with moon missions, the US would notice the sudden radio silence - both figuratively and literally - from the soviets about it, and figure out that the USSR had changed their focus.
