What if the Suns drafted Luka Doncic? | 2018 NBA Re-Draft | CBS Sports HQ

They say hindsight is 20/20, but that still requires you to be far enough away from the situation to make that determination. After just a year under the belts of the 2018 NBA Draft class, we still have nowhere near a complete picture of how the players’ careers will play out.
It’s safe to say, however, that at least a few teams would think twice about their selections last summer given the information that they have now. With that in mind, our CBS Sports HQ decided to redo the 2018 draft, keeping in mind team needs and the skill sets that were displayed by last year’s rookies.

Suns didn't draft Luka, cuz Kokoskov knew it was a bad place for him. Supposedly, he himself advised him to try to get to Dallas. Every basketball fan in Slovenia knows that, cmon America, try to peek out of your box a little...
@milansilic8024
@milansilic8024 5 лет назад
You are partially right. Phoenix and Kokoskov wanted Luka, but Luka didn't want them. To be more precise, Luka had opportunity to go to Dallas, he estimated that Dallas is best team for him, he and his manager had a way to pull that of and he had to decline every other option, including his fellows Igor, Vlade and Bogdan... No other player drafted that year had similar value as Luka because they all played with bunch of kids and Luka was proven playing with grown men - for years!!! You just can not compare that two examples. American media did a good job selling a story that Ayton is number one, which we all saw last season how that went.

Ayton still goes 1 overall. You don't base draft position off of one year. It would be one thing if Ayton had a failing or mediocre season, but for a big to have those numbers in a rookie campaign at 20 years old is a rarity. Doncic played professionally for a couple years before coming to the NBA which is why his game translated so quickly. For heaven's sake, they didn't even have a PG in Phoenix distributing to this man. Can you imagine what he could have done with someone to get him the ball?

Luka didn't really get any run in the Euro league until he was 18. There has been plenty of guys come from Europe and they're not Luka. At some point people have to give this kid some credit for how good he is. I think Ayton will be a solid player, he already is but you don't wanna get roll players with the number 1 pick.

Ayton might have had excellent numbers for a rookie big, but his skillset is NOT suited to todays NBA. Yes he will likely be a star in the league, but there hasn't really been a true superstar of his type for a long time. For a dinosaur style post up big who doesn't stretch the floor, he hasn't really shown he'll be a great defender either. Sure things like shooting and defense could improve, but he's starting from a pretty low point I'd say given his style. I think he's the type of player who will post nice numbers, but not really affect games much, and will be pretty easily game planned for in the playoffs. He's not close to as talented as Embiid IMO, who has significantly higher bball IQ, especially on defense. Doncic on the other hand has exactly the skillset required to be a superstar in today's NBA. He doesn't play much defense but neither do a number of the current top 10 players in the NBA. He has exceptional passing skills, can score from any part of the court and has the alpha dog mentality to take the ball and make plays down the stretch. His shot mechanics are actually pretty good to where i'd expect a pretty decent increase in shooting percentages across the board, especially now that he has another guy to take pressure off so he doesn't have to make so many difficult shots. He'll easily be a 25ppg+ scorer in year 2 from that alone.

Ayton is never going to have an impact to the game as Luka. He will have to work like hell to manage to be that better player, to actually mean something in the game. Ayton is a role player and always will be. Deal with it.

Suns couldn't draft Luka because Luka didn't want to go there. Learn it already.
@haidermoh.9937
@haidermoh.9937 5 лет назад
That is simply not true. You're just making stuff up. Suns didn't draft him because although both Ayton and Doncic were good, Ayton also fit positional need because good centers are harder to find than good point guards.
@milansilic8024
@milansilic8024 5 лет назад
@@haidermoh.9937 Igor was brought as coach because one simple thing: to get Luka to Phoenix. He failed, he is out. As we all, Luka knew the draft order up front and he knew he can influence to which of the top draft teams he can go. Lukas party (himself, family, manager...) wanted that he goes to the best possible team for him, of those top 5 from the draft list. That was obviously Dallas because they where the most professional team of them all, good market, and they are proven to have will and enthusiasm to work with non american/canadian players and to respect them the right way... which we couldn't say about the rest of those teams from the top of that years draft. Luka and his manager informed suns, kings and hawks that he will not sign with them, even if they pick him. In the euro media there were news that is possible that Luka stay one more year in Spain, if he is not picked by the right team for him. There are many ways a player do not have to sign with the team that drafted them, DRAFT DOESN'T MEAN CONTRACT OBLIGATION!!! Draft is NBA inner protocol thing, it set the rule to nba teams - not players! Draft basically disallow other teams to sign a player you pick. If player that you pick doesn't want to come to your team, you have a value that doesn't do your team any good and by the time, that value mostly gets smaller. No manager want that noose around his neck, he can be fired because of that. They usually want to resolve that kind of problem ASAP. American media is one of the "best sales agencies in the world", their job is to sell you a story, in the way that is "easily digestible" to common people in the US. They easily sold you that Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, guys who literally can not shoot the ball are first picks on the draft!!! That some dude named Lonzo is basketball talent, that Wigins and Jabari are new Kobe and leBron, that Trae Young is the new Steph Curry, that DeAndre Ayton is the new "second coming", that Marvin Bagly have similar value then Luka... that college basketball is approx same as euroleague... for C sake they sold you that NBA champion is the same as world champion... :D and you believed them! What a bunch of crap. Suns, Kings and Hawks just didn't have any choice but to skip Luka (Suns and Kings skip, Hawks trade). That was the only solution. believe me, the whole Serbian media knew how hard Vlade and Bogdan worked to get him to the Kings. Luka did the smart thing, Dallas is indeed the best team for his development among the top 4/5 teams from the top of that year draft lottery, as we all saw last season!

The Suns would still draft Ayton if the NBA re-drafted today. Anyone who doesn't think so just doesn't understand how NBA teams operate. NBA teams do not draft players based on a projection of what they think the player will be in year one. They draft players based on a projection of how they think the players entire career will play out. The Suns think that Ayton will have the better CAREER. They aren't alone in that view. And one season isn't going to change that view. Especially when Ayton played really well.

"The Suns would still draft Ayton if the NBA re-drafted today" You are right. Luka still didn't want to go to that crappy team. Especially now when they fired Igor.
