Plagueis would then further strengthen this mental divide, this way, Plagueis would both have a politician completely loyal to him (through lies & manipulation like "Oh, I killed Sidious and saved you") and the perfect Sith Apprentice who was 100% pure evil. So, you have Palpatine, the well meaning and wise politician from Naboo who genuinely wants to do the right thing And Darth Sidious, a monster made of pure carnage and darkness, who has no desire to have any apprentice and kill all who oppose him. A living weapon (briefly) controlled by Plagueis. Then, as Palpatine becomes Chancellor, Sidious kills Plagueis and the divide between the two personalities begins to slowly thin within the decades. Eventually, Palpatine becomes more dark, wanting power not for the sake of it but because he fears that the Republic will fall if he were to lose it. Bad actions, good intentions. Whereas Sidious would gain a hint of mercy for Skywalker, who Palpatine would see like a son (like Goblin having a hint of mercy for Spiderman because Norman sees Peter as a son)
