What If You Drilled a Hole Through Earth?

What If

You know what might be the best way to travel to the other side of the world? By drilling your way right through the planet. Imagine going from Argentina to China in less than an hour. This would be the journey of a lifetime, if you don't mind riding through molten rock and crushing pressure. What would you see along the way? How long would this journey through Earth take? And how would a gravity train keep you alive? The heat is on, and you're under all sorts of pressure. How deep is the deepest hole drilled in the Earth?

Ah, this clip totally reminded me of Made in Abyss, although the abyss really doesnt get as deep as the core. Although some of its features are really consistent, like if you tried to ascend in the abyss, humans die immediately and everyone calls it a curse, while in actuality, the abyss is so deep that the pressure difference gets to them, although they never addressed the heat, I think it would be a problem at lower levels.

On a gravity train, you'd experience weightlessness for the entire trip, not just at the centre. At the centre, the train itself would momentarily stop accelerating, but the observer inside wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

Another thing about that 42 minute travel time: it remains the same no matter where the ends of your tunnel are. You don't have to drill it through the center; you will travel a shorter distance but at a reduced speed. Let's say you start at Chicago and end in London. As long as there is no friction or air resistance, the time is still 42 minutes. This is because your direction of travel is "diagonal" (or tangential if you prefer) to the Earth's center of gravity, so you accelerate downward more slowly. Then as you pass the midpoint and begin to decelerate toward the surface, you do so more slowly as well, so you come to the surface in the same amount of time as through the center, travelling at a lower velocity. The shallower the tunnel, the slower the velocity and shorter the distance - always resulting in a 42 minute trip.

Question: Is it possible to drill a hole through the earth with out affecting Earth's magnetic field?
@blackbeardshorts007
@blackbeardshorts007 3 года назад
In case of earths surface and a point on space , magnetic field will remain same,; in case of inside the earth, magnetic field of earth will be equal to the magnetic field of a solenoid( B=uo*NI/L)
@olitilak_22
@olitilak_22 3 года назад
@@blackbeardshorts007 i ment like... On Earth, flowing of liquid metal in the outer core of the planet is responsible for the magnetic field of earth that protects us from solar radiation...(so, drilling the hole through Earth would surely disturb the flow of molten metals i.e. disturbing the magnetic field)-I THINK ... would that be the problem?
@kid10249595
@kid10249595 2 года назад
@@olitilak_22 my thing is that a hole wouldn't be a great idea given it to me at least, not sure about this entirely. Would potentially make a volcano given it would be like poking a hole into a balloon full of water. In that it would create a point of which magma could use to escape. Given that's what volcanos essentially are, their holes in the crust that magma uses to escape to the surface due to the immense pressure that pushes it out of the mantle.
@xavierdaume2757
@xavierdaume2757 Год назад
Drilling a hole that reaches the nucleus or through the Earth would not affect the magnetic field at all. The magnetic field is produced by the rotational movement of the nucleus (Aprox. composed of 80 % iron and 10 % nickel ) and by the rotation of the Earth.That movement works like a giant dynamo that generates the magnetic field. Drilling an insignificant hole or tunnel compare to the size of the earth would not change that movement at all. However we should be worry about magnetic changes when they are inverted between the Poles (North /South). The last magnetic change occurred 780,000 years ago, so the human being has already gone through this dramatic change. But is impossible to predict when is going to be the next magnetic changes and what would be its consequences, but Im´sure it won`t be good

The gravity train concept only works for the first half of the trip, when the train is going towards the same direction of gravity. For the second half, the train would go against the gravity in order to reach the other side of the planet, so it would need some kind of engine.

momentum wouldn't matter because you would begin to slow down after passing the halfway mark, as gravity flips and you stop falling and start climbing. a gravity train would only work until it hit the centre, then you would need propulsion.

Technically, it'd be more efficient to create 2 drills. Although the possible land to land areas are few. It's more than likely drilling through the Earth would end up in an ocean not land.

@@rubyruby7573 , They will never drill beyond 8 miles deep, they tried, it just can't be done, it will never be done, just like us going to Mars or whatever, that will never happen either. Why would you want to go to anywhere if the exact same group of A holes are in charge of everything like we have currently (no pun intended).

You just have to make a drill capable of cutting through pure Diamond, Iron and Nickel in their pure, solid, and pressurised forms and also withstanding thousands of degrees of extereme heat and the of course the high pressure. So basically, travel will be like a submarine made from materials from Space Shuttles, Tanks, Submarines, mining drills and lots and lots of Uranium layers (heat, chemical and pressure reactions will change its state to weapons grade enriched, then it completly solidifies to what you get in reactors and what makes up the armor of some military tanks.

So if you in theory somehow safely travel through the earth point a to b .. wouldn’t you at some point start to travel back the opposite way? Or would the gravitation pull flip? Seems like you’d get stuck in the middle between a and b
@80s_Boombox_Collector
@80s_Boombox_Collector 11 месяцев назад
If you simply allowed gravity to pull you down the first half, your momentum would carry you all the way through the second half
