Don't Recover/Revive Dead Lithium-Ion Battery Packs: • Reviving Lithium Ion B...
The Nobleman Tech Fireproof Eskate Bag is a large bag that was meant to store electric skateboards and similar PEVs (it can indeed fit Onewheels like the Onewheel XR or GT). The idea was to have a container that the board is placed inside during charging, and would protect against battery fires if something went wrong during charging. However, as the testing showed, it did not do an adequate job in protecting against the results of a lithium ion battery thermal runaway scenario.

Regarding the Mario Contino's assistance in NOBLEMAN's testing of fireproof bags, first of all, we are very grateful to the technical support for helping us test the gas capacity limit of the fireproof bag. Thanks a lot. The reason for the final analysis: The fireproof bag is made of a whole piece of fabric, with only one seam (the only seam shown in the video). The inner volume of the bag is fixed. When the battery is burned, a large amount of gas will be released instantly. The gas released by the battery exceeds the volume limit of the fireproof package. In this test, 45 GA cells and 2 lipo packs are used. The more batteries, the more gas is released. When the gas released by the battery exceeds The volume limit of the fireproof bag caused the cracking of the seam, as shown in this video (in practical application, due to the blocking of the battery box, the gas will not be released instantaneously, but will pass through the gap of the battery box, and the release pressure will be greatly weakened ). After discussing with our technicians, we will take corresponding strengthening measures 1. The fireproof bag flows out of the pressure relief port, which allows the excess gas to be discharged smoothly. 2. Reinforce the fireproof bag seams with metal rings. 3. For large-capacity batteries, properly open the zipper opening to ensure smooth exhaust. At the same time, We will test the above three schemes separately, adopt the best effect scheme, and give the net red a strengthened fireproof package, and the net red will continue to test for everyone, so stay tuned.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it. I also appreciate that you're taking measures to improve the product and reduce the severity of the failure from such an event. However I would like to mention that I disagree with this statement: "(in practical application, due to the blocking of the battery box, the gas will not be released instantaneously, but will pass through the gap of the battery box, and the release pressure will be greatly weakened )" Given the clips I included, and the very large amount of variation in the enclosure design and battery size of any of the popular electric skateboards, there is no way to say how quickly/slowly the off-gassing of any battery inside a device will happen. This is specifically why I chose to produce what I felt was a medium-sized "worst case failure", and that some fires may actually be worse. The testing of revised versions of a containment device should be tested with a variety of scenarios that cover the range of possible situations, so there's a better idea as to what can be contained and what cannot. BUT, again, thank you for your response, and the desire to continue to improve the product. Cheers.

On the Nobleman website they have a vid showing how their first bag failed but after improvements were done it didn’t burn anymore. The problem though wasn’t just not being fireproof. The main issue was the bag being unable to contain the force of the explosion which tore it open and allowed the fire out through the hole. This issue was not addressed in the video on the Nobleman site. They merely showed their bags were now made with fabric that was more fire resistant than before, but if they still tear open from the force of the first ignition then it doesn’t matter how fire resistant the fabric is.

I have no idea how I'm just barely finding your channel. The content and quality of your videos are super top tier, and the style is refreshing to see. The pratical part of testing/reviewing is a big thing. With videos of tests being provided and more knowledgable people in the community approving it, it was hard to even question if its safety covered all scenarios. Also the danger and lack of knowledge to test such a thing again (after tests were supposdely already provided). Didn't even realize the bags were no longer available till now; which sorta takes away any meaning from me unlisting the video. I did anyways tho. I saw them mention adding some sort of extinguisher to the bag in terms of a v2. Hope to see what comes of that

Thank you. It's like a length of fireproof tube needs to be installed on the side to vent gas. We used to look for a "UL" label on products to assure that products were held to a standard. We seem to have let that slide in recent decades.

One MILLION THANX for sharing this potentially life and property saving information ! My first e-bike arrived 2 weeks ago, and I have yet to even charge the battery after watching a few videos about battery safety. I was trying to decide which fire resistant battery storage bag is best? Many other videos discuss the bag's "fire" proof abilities, but they don't discuss if these bags can resist "explosion." They do warn not to charge the battery while sleeping nor charging when away from home. They mention that if the bag was on fire, if the bag has long handle straps, you would likely have time to grab the handles and toss the bag outdoors. Well that might work for people who live on a first floor or near an exit but for people who depend on stairs or elevators may be in serious trouble trying to "throw a fireball outdoors." I am really looking for something that will retard an explosion. I did see some "ammo" boxes online. Not sure how those work. But thank you for this. ⚘️⚘️⚘️

This right here is why I'm a patron and subscriber. Well researched, practical, thorough, no bullshit. Three cheers. As to Nobleman's response, it sure didn't look like the seams are what failed, it looked like the material ripped. In any event, making a stronger pressure vessel is not a way to make the situation less dangerous, that's like trying to make a safer pipe bomb by using thicker pipe. Any system which wants to really solve this problem is going to have to vent the overpressure in such a way as to not set the surrounding surfaces on fire. Tricky problem, for sure, but I don't see any way around it, the volume of gas produced is gonna have to go someplace.

@@TheBoardGarage It's made in China junk lol. Although I've seen videos of these bags that seem to be made in China and actually contain the fires. The problem is its a crapshoot roll of the dice, 5 star reviews on Amazon are meaningless because some of them are just shills, while others put 5 stars and never even bother to test the products. This society is a total joke. One thing you can try is see if it is Internationally Certified. But I don't know what particular certification to look for. I know there is a fireproof certification but I don't know if there is a specific Lithium explosion certification or not. The International Certification website should have a list of approved products and companies to make sure the certification label that the company on Amazon/Ebay claims to have isn't fake. And I'm more inclined to go the ammo box route. If the volume of gas per amp hour is truly 2 liters as you say, then a battery might have only a few hundred PSI at most. Surely an ammo box could contain this? Although transporting a pressurized 400F ammo box would be be nerve-wracking. Because stopping the fire is only half the battle, there are also toxic fumes. Most of these bags are designed to emit fumes to reduce the psi. And the amount of research on the fumes seem to be low effort, the search engine just seems to show bot-made websites that regurgitate the same talking points. The conclusion seems to be there are 100 different chemicals in the fumes and that nobodies sure of chronic effects.
@earthenscience
@earthenscience Год назад
Update: I am not sure about the ammo box route anymore. Someone showed than an ammo box is too flimsy and could cause an explosion. I guess ammo boxes are not meant to contain ammo explosions. Perhaps a reinforced ammo box might work but I would feel unsafe holding it if a LiPo ignited inside. There doesn't seem to be any solution to prevent fumes. All in all a very low effort to create reasonable lithium safety products.

Excellent explainer, thank you! You mentioned supervised charging, which I do. But in your opinion, is there any appreciable risk of a battery pack catching fire in a board just sitting there and not turned on or charging? For the sake of argument let's say it's been at least an hour since charging.
@TheBoardGarage
@TheBoardGarage 2 года назад
The risk of a random failure or fire in a board that's just sitting there, and has been sitting there for a while, is pretty unlikely. From my testing, cells took about 4-10 minutes to enter thermal runaway once a very high heat source was applied. Usually the issue would present during the hours it would take to charge a PEV, or during its use since impacts and vibrations are combining with high current draws from the entire device. If a board or other PEV is working normally, hasn't been in an accident or subject to abuse or misuse, then generally it would just simply be fine. The only instances I've seen of random fires from something sitting there are from major manufacturing oversights, that lead to a gradual failure as the product sits there. But that's also very rare. The worst fire events where property is damaged and people are harmed, seem to be from charging overnight, or from it not being monitored. The few videos I've seen where these fires happen while the owner is present, they can usually act quickly enough to both call for a Fire Department, and try to address things however they can.

Very interesting. A bit out of topic but in your opinion, provided it is correctly installed, is a CBXR more dangerous than a regular XR ? I mean, regarding fire.
@NoahZimmerman
@NoahZimmerman 2 года назад
As far as I’m aware, if it is done correctly, since the CBXR cells are higher quality/can handle more current, the chance of it catching fire is very very low. However, whenever you modify something, it’s probably a good idea to assume that the chance of failure is higher even though theoretically it should be the opposite. But, with all of the testing done on the original OneWheel battery, it’s fair to say it’s very safe. Now if a CBXR battery did catch fire somehow, it would most likely be a larger/more violent fire due to the much increased capacity of the cells, and the pack all together. This is just based off of my knowledge of batteries, but I’m sure there are plenty of people that know much more than me on this topic.
@MrDmadness

There have been instances where water damage leads to battery failure. There's a piece in this video about it, but it's farther inside. I talk about how water weakens things, like the insulation inside the pack. Also, leads to corrosion and connection failures.

@@TheBoardGarage Wow, Makes total sense. Gradual “Degradation” then maybe one random day of charging and then 🔥 🔥 🔥? YES?
@TheBoardGarage
@TheBoardGarage 2 года назад
Well generally, no. Gradual/natural battery degradation doesn't lead to catastrophic failure. In most cases, the cells wear out, giving you less range, then ultimately less power. Over time it'll still work but you'll notice it's nowhere near its original abilities. Assuming good build quality and no major accidents, it'll fade away and you'll just need to replace the battery.

@@TheBoardGarage OH, OKAY. Well once my batteries no longer hold a charge thats when i'll probably give this hobby up. still might be awhile though between 3 wheels i guess i have about another 1,400 cycles lol. do you own a fire safe for your wheels? I think i've seen Kuji rolls with one.

The idea that you told them you were going to test it and they didn't send you their best possible product (according to their response) is questionable enough. Nevermind the house burning down scenario this would have created.

Most people that use e-bikes/scooters are doing so to save money on gasoline and the expense of owing a car. The majority of Americans are being forced to downsize their lifestyle and are financially struggling. Now imagine getting an e-bike/scooter to SAVE money and the @$%& BURNS the house DOWN !!! NOW IMAGINE THAT !!! 🤯

I find it odd they would send you a product they knew would fail and then say they updated the stitching in newer models. I really odd and misleading, so much so that leads some one not to trust their product.

LiPo, Lithium Polymer battery. Generally a high discharge, pouch based battery pack. Usually more fragile and volatile than cylindrical lithium ion or lithium iron phosphate batteries.

hi the reason you cant recell those batts is because there using can bus comms ie the bms must talk to the controller to turn on the do the same thing with bosch ebikes and every company uses there own version so very hard to crack but it can be done just not cheap. with a bosch bms if you cut power to it it looses the can bus software tho it can be recelled and it will charge as soon as you plug it in to the bikes controller it is bricked and the bms is a bin job why 99% of batt builders wont touch them with a barge poll because the signal is sent from the batt to the controller and back every 30 milliseconds. i have a 2014 haibike with a 400w batt and it now so old it can just do 5 miles on a charge but i can not do bugerall to fix it my self liofit in germany can do it but it will just end up costing more than a new bosch batt and replacing one locked system for another one as if you remove power it kills the bms as they somehow mod the bosch ones i did ask but top secret !!! and cant tell me for security reasons. as for the motors none of them sell bearings or any parts and dont use of the shelf bearings either so have to be custom made with a min order of 1000 in a gen 2 bosch cx motor that i have there are 10 bearings inside the motor and after 10.000 miles all need to be replaced tho they do make a service kit that you can fit it is only the right hand side cover and just 2 of the bearings you would need. peter at ebike motor centere / performance line bearings started a company up a few years ago now as had same bike as me and found the same problem you cant buy the fkn bearings so now sells most bearings for most motors and ships them world wide and can fully service them bar the shimano motors becouse he did fix some of the ep8000 motors only to find out the software can detect the motors cover has been opened and software locked all the ones he had worked on so had to replace them all as shimano blamed him for dearing to open it up fkn joke so fook those things and the batts are even worse to fix than most others as well. i have been trying to tell louis this for years but now even bafang are going can bus so forget using there controllers if you want to go fast and i have even seen a vesc controller used on a bosch motor if you rip out the controller board. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gz5cjFxzDsE.html&ab_channel=PerformanceLineBearings

@DaveTangey

As stated the chemical reaction produces it's own oxygen, so no you cannot put the fire out, best you can do is call the fire brigade and protect yourself and other exposures from smoke and flame.

Well... my question still is... wtf are your alternatives that are practical. People buying these bags are trying to prevent practically. Telling people ahy those bags don't work and that's one thing, but providing solutions is a whole lot better. And seems less douchey
@TheBoardGarage
@TheBoardGarage 4 месяца назад
No, what’s douchey is selling something at a premium price, to uninformed consumers, and lying about the safety it provides. Which, is what was done. Customers literally were saying “I got this for peace of mind.” And they were lied to. By the company selling the bag, and the people happily promoting it with their affiliate marketing links and promo codes. I wasn’t the one selling anything. I tested a bullshit product.

It’s curious that only the douchiest people seem to use a word like “douchey” Well…my question still is…you actually took time to complain about Mario merely showing the deficiencies of a product? You could have simply asked if there were any alternatives, even recommended it as a future video topic, and not lowered yourself to a personal attack. Especially after saying that just telling people why these bags don’t work is acceptable. Your being empowered by the use of “wtf” and “douchey” is telling, as is your mastery of grammar and spelling, but I’m sure you would have found Mario a lot more willing to consider your inquiry if you were less of what you are accusing Mario of being. No doubt that you’ll now attempt to sting me with a retort worthy of your prodigious intellectual prowess. I tremble in fear, knowing my world will be shattered by the power and scope of your response.

My comment was deleted due to link, I guess. There is an outfit in Europe which makes a bag which has a top vent and succeeds tests like this. Lith*** Safe. Unfortunately this company has not partnered up with Amazon to mass market these. You have to request a quote. Very poor marketing from this firm. They need to promote these and mass produce them so all have the opportunity to improve safety in buildings. The current battery technology is unacceptable and is only used because battery technology lags far behind the devices which they power. Billions of dollars are being spent on R&D by car companies to come up with fireproof solid-state batteries for EV's which will not burn, and in some years these will supplant current technology. In actuality, acceptance of present technology is a mass delusion by society and really should not be used at all. The E bike industry is just now being forced to accept UL lab certifications for some reasonable safety, after hundreds of e bike fires in NYC over the last two years. Still not enough. As people misuse charging of these devices over time, more and more fires will happen, creating a safety crisis, maybe mass outlawing these being kept in buildings. I have already read several condo associations and apartment managements have denied these in their projects due to fire risk.

What if you charged the battery in vacummed (almost no oxygen) box ? Could it still explode and catch fire ?
