What is a $15,000 House in Japan Like?

My friend from college lives in Fukui, Japan. A few years back he bought a house for $15,000 USD (approx. ¥1,500,000). The video posts ¥15,000,000, but it is in face ¥1,500,000 (150万)
I spent a few days learning more about his life and what it's like to live in this really cool house, located next door to an ancient shrine, at the foot of a mountain, with a talking bird, in a place most tourists never venture.
Life in Japan can be a lot of fun, but can also be challenging. Ralph is a fellow San Diegan that has made a life in Japan.
He ran a cafe a few years back that I wish I had the opportunity to visit, hopefully he can do something like that again soon. Eating his home cooking was like being back in America!
Come for the old house, stay for the shenanigans!
I post food, places and unique things about Japan on social media. Follow any of these if you would like to see more great Japanese things.

I lived in Fukui as an exchange student a long time ago. The tour of Ralph's House and the Fukui sightseeing bought back so many memories. Thank you

I absolutely love videos like this. Yeah it’s ordinary, but to see how regular people live and do things gives us ideas and dreams.

Yeah no fancy effects or special things in this vid but seeing how down to earth Ralph is and his life in this house was a lot of fun for me that it didn’t really need to add much else...I think so at least 😅

Such an interesting video love the location of the house right next to a shrine! OMG the walk the plank access to the attic 😱 you were brave!

Hands down if I lived in Fukui I would buy this house, it’s cheaper than my car! The plank was even more scary with socks 😄

When I saw the title, I was thinking it must be an Akiya. Nice house, especially for that price.

Right? I wouldn’t mind having a place to work on like that, very few issues they have had with that place considering the age and the price

I do construction, and that house would be wild as hell to try to renovate and figure out, at least for me.
@NomadicGaijin
@NomadicGaijin 3 года назад
I have no idea about construction, the place seemed great to me but I can imagine as you said renovations would be crazy to work out. Just curious, was there a part of the house you thought would be the most difficult area to deal with, or something you thought was strange from a construction viewpoint.

Have you watched toddatrons old renovations? They’re wild. He had American skills and redid his Japanese home maybe 8 years ago.

Yes I hang out at that house all the time so watching those videos is a trip. Place is so cool now

This whole situation made no sense to me until the bit about a "red zone" and "mud slides" came up, although it still seems like an incredible deal. Make it half a year and you're basically making money compared to renting in many places.
@NomadicGaijin
@NomadicGaijin 3 года назад
It was likely built before the earthquake standard requirements were updated, which tends to make houses a bit cheaper. Fukui is pretty safe though, that’s why they put a bunch a nuclear plants there 😂

Ralph seems awesome 😆 My husband has been obsessed with looking at cheap homes on japanese websites. This should have definitely been one where he'd be like, "look at this!" Tell him thanks for the tour!

Thanks for watching! Yeah I can't believe how cheap the place is, even though it's old it has stood up to typhoons and snow storms for years, it really has some character. Also Ralph is most definitely awesome, I'm sure he is happy seeing these comments (if he reads them haha)

I don’t know I’ll ask him, he did get a lot of stuff from an old house he turned into a restaurant, and stuff like that giant finger he just picked up at used shops for cheap so maybe he got them there

Don't tell me he has a Japanese wife, because I have one, and she would have had me rebuild and refurnish the entire place before allowing it to be put on youtube. This guy didn't even bother lining the shoes in the genkan up properly! Or did he surprise her with a "Honey, guess what!" when she got back home?
@NomadicGaijin
@NomadicGaijin 3 года назад
Haha yeah I hear you, my wife would do that too. Ralph and his wife are really chill, although I imagine some of it was a “honey, guess what!” 😂 Crossing my fingers she still likes me after this 😅

Nice video, came here from a reddit live thingy. Would be nice to see the garden of the house in the proper weather and period. Also how 15k is compared to other houses there? How much is yours?
@NomadicGaijin
@NomadicGaijin 3 года назад
Thanks for joining from the stream 😊 I was only there a few days but would also love to see the garden in the right season. I live in a very different area closer to Tokyo, where houses often cost $350,000-$500,000 so seeing a house not much smaller than my place for $15,000 blew my mind, even if it is a more countryside area. Thanks for the feedback I will consider trying to add more comparisons when I do these kind of videos, nice idea 😁

Question regarding drones in japan: are drones over 200g heavily restricted and require permission everywhere, or only in populated areas?
@NomadicGaijin
@NomadicGaijin 3 года назад
The rules I showed somewhere mid video apply to drones over 200g, check out the drone maps app for iPhone or a similar one for android, avoid red zones and you are good 👍 most of Tokyo or big cities are difficult but go out of the city and you are usually pretty safe

How much renovations work was needed
@NomadicGaijin
@NomadicGaijin 3 года назад
Not much he said, they had to take out the pond and add more concrete to register a second parking space, they paid some money to hook up to city sewage but the septic system was fine, he just didn’t want to deal with it. Otherwise its been pretty much fine since they got it. These days houses like this are coming up for cheap as the original owners pass away or move away and their next of kin don’t want to come out and deal with it so they just sell it off as is. I think he really lucked out with this place, usually they are in pretty bad shape.
