Hi Ana, nice video, thanks for sharing! Btw besides overwatering, I find that another common reason for splitting can be that a fertilizer which is unsuitable for cacti was used... as most slow growing cacti do require special cactus fertilizers - these have a much lower concentration of the N (nitrogen) component than e.g. most standard fertilizers for green-leafed flowering plants have. So in my experience, "overfeeding" with a N-rich fertlizer also commonly results in splitting.

That is very true! Too much love is also not good for our cacti. 😉

Oh, yes, I get cacti splits after the winter when my cacti are dry and the epidermis is really hard. 😅I haven't ever applied anything to splits, they heal up even in humid weather here. Just make sure to keep them away from any rain. Thanks for the video🙏🌟I enjoyed watching

FANTASTIC advice and video Ana, I have had a few cactus that have cracked open due to taking up too must water too fast, some of my Lophs can be prone to this too, its so good that it rarely will harm the cactus and callus's over, I have had to take it slow with watering again with my cacti when I started back up watering again last week after the heatwave to prevent a lot of them splitting open, thanks so much for sharing this wonderful video and tips Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and CACTUS POWER to Las Vegas for a wonderful Wednesday ahead XXXX

I fertilized my echinopsis with tomato fertilizer in March, then several days later it sucked up so much water it split. Lesson learned, no tomato fertilizer on that plant.

Very sound advice Ana!! Yes, I've had this happen before also. Lophophora are very prone to this condition. Especially after a long dry winter in my greenhouse. Mine happened in the spring after giving them a bit too much for the first drink. I would rather use cinnamon also !! I know we have to use chemicals for certain things like bugs & fungus, but if I have a choice of a natural cure that works as well as cinnamon does, I will go with it . After learning about this from Lyn and yourself, I've had great results with it!!! It completely cured my Blossfeldia when it started to rot. Just cleaned out the bad tissue and powdered it with cinnamon and the results were fantastic!! Even helped dry and pull it back together!! And it was a huge spot!! Helped cure Debs caudiciform ficus!! One of the major large roots had rotted from poor potting at Walmart, or rather the growers. Ihad to cut it off and dig out the rot. Left a knot hole but I put cinnamon in it and it's doing well!!! Like Aloe for plants!! Thanks Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful evening!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌹🌳🌷🌲🏵🌿😃👍

Oh, I just learned from you and Daz that Lophophora is prone to splitting. I better be careful. Yaye for cinnamon. It’s cheap, it smells good and I can use it in my coffee, too! 😁😉 I remember your Blossfeldia that rotted from the top. Good to hear that it healed well. 👍🏼

Lovely video as always, Ana. As for me a few months ago I bought an Astrophytum Ornatum on line and it came with a split, not a big deal, roots are ok and it looks great overall. By the way I love Ferocactus Glauscescens (I have 3) and I wonder if you in near future could show us all your ferocactus.

Another informative video, Ana. I’ve had this happen a few times, especially with Lophs. I’ll need to be careful on my next watering as most plants have gone over two weeks without a drink and we’re still in drought conditions here with no signs of rain anytime soon. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌸🌺🌼🏜☕️

Enjoyed the video Ana 😁 Also some epidermis on certain cactus is more prone to splitting if they are harder skinned, like my Astrophytum onzuka, which has a harder epidermis than other Astrophytum and it needs careful watering otherwise they will abruptly split...apparently 😬😄👍🏻🌵

Hi Anna Thanks for all the informative videos! I have a question: how do you keep up which cactus/plant you watered and which ones not? Do you just keep up with how it looks? Or do you have a calendar that you mark?
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 2 года назад
I try to water my plants all at the same time. Sometimes, I would water them by sections in my yard. This is why I try to keep most of them in terracotta pots so they all dry out at the same time and I don’t have to keep track of a schedule for each plant. 😀 I keep a calendar (when I remember) for when I watered the sections during the week. 😉
