What makes a chief? Is it the anchors? His experience? Her khakis? All Hands Magazine recently sat down with a group of chief petty officers at Naval Air Systems Command and Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, to discuss what a chief is and the importance of deckplate leadership.

Made QMC in Jan ‘ 65. First Chief’s mess had over have of the members were WWII vets. They would tell stories about what ships they were on and what battles they were in. I sat there and learned from them how to be a Chief. They were the greatest generation. 🇺🇸⚓️🇺🇸

Selected for Chief the first time up. Initiated 09.16.1982. CTOC. Retired as a CT CWO4.

I enjoy remembering the Real Navy... when My Chief asked me to lunch in the CPO mess on an LPD.... I was not Sailor of the lunchtime.....the quarter.....the year...I was just a Sailor. A REAL Chief would bring you in the mess to teach...and to share... and to grow SAILORS.... When I made Chief.... I followed that... and it's funny how my fellow CPOs did not like me doing that.... Never forget the first color of your shirt.... SMH....
