What is a Coordinate Covalent Bond?

This chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into coordinate covalent bond. Line any covalent bond, electrons are shared. However, in a coordinate covalent bond, one atom donates both electrons that contribute to the formation of the bond. A lewis acid lewis base reaction can form a coordinate covalent bond as well as metal ligand interactions.

I'm watching this to freshen up some material for the MCAT. I'm an older student who just finished up a postbac to apply to medical school. Two years ago I wasn't even sure if I would be able to make it to this point, as I had significant doubts about my academic abilities. Your videos have helped me in every single class I've taken by explaining clearly the confusing topics, providing examples, and by providing the ability to slow down and re-watch until things make sense. Your ability to teach is world class, and I can honestly say I would not have made it this far without the resources you've provided. Thank you!

Well, one of the defining characteristice of a covalent bond is that one atom bonds with another, they bond by each sharing one of their unpaired valence electrons. And a lot of the time that is the case. But there are almost always some degree of variations to these "rules". The coordinate covalent bond is one of those variations. The group number of the column (on the periodic table) that the atom can be found in, tells you how many valence electrons an atom has. The octet rule states that atoms typically strive for 8 electrons to make a stable compound. In the 2nd example in the video, Boron is shown to have 3 valence electrons (because it is in group 3). And Flourine has 7. So F has one unpaired valence electron, and boron has 3. So the 3 F atoms bond w one B and they share electrons. So now boron has 6 electrons in valence. N has 5 valence (group 5) and 3 are unpaired. So each of N unpaired electrons bond w one of the 3 Hydrogen atoms (each w one valence electron). So that means the nitrogen has 6 paired electrons and 2 unpaired. So 8 total (octet rule). And remember Boron only has 6. So in this case a "coordinate covalent bond" can take place. Boron has no other unpaired electrons to share. So N shares its paired electrons. Now Boron and Nitrogen both have 8 valence electrons. This happens bc the electronegativity values for N makes it slightly negative (pulls electrons closer to itself), and Boron (less valence e) is slightly positive (less valence electrons). The slight positive and negative charges, allow the coordinate covalent bond to take place.

Is there a special notation used when drawing either lewis dot diagrams, or any other method, to indicate that a bond is actually a coordinate covalent bond (and not just a typical covalent bond)?

There was an example that when Carbon and oxygen bonds and there are 2 "ordinary" covalent bonds and one coordinate covalent bond but since carbon has 4 electrons ( one in each side) how is this possible? Does an electron from carbon attach to another of it's electrons to make way for oxygen's electron pair to be shared with it?

The plus comes from N, Nitrogen which is the central atom of NH3 will donate its lone pair to form coordinate bond with Ag, the donor atom will have a positive charge and the receiver atom will have a negative charge. Therefore, the positive charge comes from N

Coco Loco it’s not really “giving” the electrons up as much as it is “sharing them”. In an ionic bond, the cation loses the electron it gives up completely while in coordinate covalent bonds, they are shared between both atoms.
