this is my alternative in learning right now. because of the pandemic, we used modular classes, basically self study with no discussion. today is my 1st day of class, all we did the whole day is scrambling around the net to look for answers and pass it barely in time. after class, i studied right away just to understand the activities and quizzes i took today. it sucks and i want to drop out right away. #AcademicFreezeNow

I relate to this so much. I have online learning. Yet our professor only does consultations, he answers our questions about the modules he posts. He doesn't have lessons that teaches us part by part what's in the module. It's basicay self study. But it's a struggle for me, since I have so many other subjects and I sometimes don't have enough time to go through the modules. And if I do, I usually get stuck at one part of the module and I wouldn't know what to do, so I'll wait for the next consultation and ask about it. Then after that I resume with the module, then get stuck again but by that time the consultation is already over for that module so I can't ask anymore. So I get stuck in a loop. I don't know if you get it but basically, it sucks. And videos like these are my saving grace.

I'm confused about the electro-negativity difference, when do you have to calculate it? "H-Br has different elements", meaning H is nonmetal and Br is also nonmetal so why do we have to calculate the electro negativity for it? That goes for I-Br too. I'm not sure if anyone understands my question, but that's where I'm confused. Like why didn't have to calculate the others electro-neg either?
@waffle9644
@waffle9644 2 года назад
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to pull its orbiting electrons into its center. No matter if a bond is ionic: metal and nonmetal or Molecular/Covalent: nonmetal and nonmetal, elements have different electronegativity values and therefore any bond could be "polar" or "nonpolar." But to contradict my previous sentence, metal and non metal bonds are ionic meaning they don't share the electrons but rather stransfer them. Polar and Non polar refers to the imbalance in the charge of a covalent/molecular bond only, because they share the electrons. So an ionic bond: any bond with a metal, cannot be considered as polar or non polar. So in the video the bond is either ionic, Molecular/Covalent nonpolar, or Molecular/Covalent polar. So if there is a bond with a metal, he wont calculate it because it is ionic and therefor neither polar or nonpolar. So extra Info: If you look on a periodic table different elements can have equal electronegativity charges. Carbon and Sulfer are both nonmetal for example and both have a 2.6 electronegativity value. So they would be non polar. But if it was Carbon and Nitrogen also nonmetals, Nitrogen has a 3.0 electronegativity value making their imbalance a value of 0.4 which would also be non polar because the elements must have a significant electronegative difference to make them polar. That "significant" difference is any difference greater than 0.5. If you have Carbon and Fluorine, Carbon is 2.6. Fluorine has a value of 4.0. 2.6-4.0=1.4 making their imbalance a value of 1.4. This means that their imbalance is greater than 0.5 so they are considered polar because Fluorine pulls the electrons "significantly" harder than the other element. Essentially, If the elements are the same like Nitrogen and Nitrogen then you wont have to calculate for their difference. If they are different elements then just to be safe, always calculate their difference whether the bond is ionic or molecular. You don't have to calculate it on paper though. You can look at one element's electronegativity and then look at the other and do mental math. That is easiest and fastest.

Hooray. Jeffrey was my Teacher's Assistant. I hope he becomes a successful chemist or doctor or whatever profession he was pursuing. It's astounding that he has such a large following on youtube. I had no idea while I was in his class.

This helps so much, I’m doing my grade 10,11 and 12. Teachers tend to teacher a bit to complex for my understanding and this helps a lot, super simple and I’m able to replay back. Thank you so much for this.

In all his video in science and mathematics, he seems to be exceeding clear and precise in his explanation to understand all concepts in just 10 -20mins. He needs to be awarded the Noble Prize for all his tremendous work which save many global societies.

I'm a transferee in a Science High School and I am currently struggling with chemistry. Because back in my old school we didn't have this kind of subject🥲. It sucks really to be left behined. All my classmates are genuises I feel so insecure all the time. They know everything while I tiredly try and end up with a failing grade😪... I really wish to be like them and be friends with them but however, their world is so different to mine... they are wealthy and privileged people. I can't even talk to them since they talk english cause I'm bad at talking to people in english. I'm so used to my native language. I feel so out of place in the classroom. I have no one to talk to😭
