26 for the win - the wheels with the most stability if you use enough spokes (since the axial angle of the spokes is bigger due to the smaller diameter), and the bike is extremely compact and short, it fits into a trunk without disassembling the wheels while a 29 is far bigger

Skill matters more than technology in XC. The weight reduction and full suspension that gets shoved down our throats is mostly marketing. Yes, these features are useful, but there are significant diminishing returns in price/performance. Also it is important to remember that even a cheap xc bike in the 500 dollar range has more or less the same features as a top of the line bike from 20 years ago.

In my „why is my old CC bike so fast“ experiments, I found out that I used to run my saddle at 100% efficiency height which makes it dangerous on descents. On the „CCified“ Pole Taival, I now only use about 3cm of travel in the dropper but this is enough to make it far safer on descents. I‘d love to see more integrated droppers like BMC also because the provide a thicker, stiffer seatpost.

Integrated stem plus handlebars are these days standard too for scott and canyon, its also spare some weight.. And scott has aslo rideloc technology, where you can lock your suspension also at 60mm... Love it, riding it maybe 50perc of all time, than 25perc unlock and 25perc fully lock. Rideloc is also changing your bike geometry, seatpost will become steeper for better climbing... Its great for some forrest climbs where you have some roots and benefit from 60mm travel and better traction and you are not loosing many watts, because bike is also stiffer. Also it is so much comfortable, like with locked suspension. Scott also rule with full carbon wheels for 4k dollars🙃, they are all arround still a little bit ahead against other brands. I will not buy any other bike without rideloc technology anymore. Nino Schurter at 5km round use it for 160 times, and also used 60mm for 50perc of all time then 30perc unlocked and 20perc fully locked..

Long cranks (175) are only good for really tall riders. The rest of under 6’ tall can produce more power with cranks at 170 or less (proportionate to leg length). Simply thinking long crank = more torque misses a whole bunch of other factors that affect the ability of a rider to sustain a high power out put. For one, there’s a bunch of efficiency loss with excess articulation of knee and hip joints. The shorter crank reduces effort of a slightly higher pedaling cadence. That slightly higher cadence results in much more power per minute than given up by the small loss of torque. I know crank length was only incidentally mentioned in this vid. But, the choice of words implied that the excessively long cranks were something good. Crank length is a topic worth investigating for a GMBN episode. Doing the math and testing to see the benefits of appropriate lengths would be great. Getting some insight on why the bike industry has been sticking everyone from 5’1” to 6’3” with only 170mm or 175mm cranks would be interesting. Personally, I’d be fascinated to find out how too long cranks became the norm. I have a 38 year old size M MTB with original 170 cranks. All size M hard tails I’ve owned in the past decade have 175 cranks. I can maintain a higher speed for 3 miles on the 38 year old bike than I can on my “modern” bikes. Builders used to know better - how did the knowledge get lost?

@BGraves
@BGraves 3 года назад
The statement about cranks being longer because it helps you get the power down more efficiently is not necessarily true. Efficient crank length has more to do with your height and geometry of your legs. Around 175 just happens to be the efficient length for a 6' person. Downhill bikes just compromise to reduce pedal strikes because they are utilizing more suspension travel on typically rougher terrain. You may already know this. If it isn't one already, I suggest you do the research and make a GMBN video on crank lengths.

29er being "standard" is really weird to me. Are cyclists all the same size? Would a 5'5" female cyclist have the same biomechanical interaction with a 29er as a 5'10" male cyclist? How about a 6'2" cyclist? A 27.5er frame would be a bit smaller, lighter, and stiffer than one designed for a 29er and the same points can be said for a 27.5 wheel. Or maybe most XC cyclists are tall enough for 29ers that smaller riders are an irrelevant market? And the bike industry seems to be trying to phase-out 26ers, which is even be lighter, stiffer, and more agile than a 27.5. I won't be surprised if the bike industry phases out 29ers and below in a few years then establish an even bigger wheel as "standard". R.I.P. smaller riders, XC would then be a tall person sport.
@mstvir
@mstvir 3 года назад
I think you are mistaken about wheel size and frame size. Undoubtedly you can get smaller bikes with 27.5er however with 29er and different frame sizes you cover most of the spectrum. Just look at UCI WC XC, most women from 5'2" to 6' ride 29ers varying from XS to L in size. 29er is all about roll over, and momentum, hence why it is preferred by most XC riders. As for agility most pros are talented enough to be able to be agile on a 29er. You can see the change to 29er even in EWS, where one might think agility is more of a factor than in XC race. So all the data points that as far as speed is concerned 29er is better. From my personal experience I am riding 29er XC, my gf is riding 27.5 XC and my brother is riding mullet XC, their bikes are far more agile than mine, but I won't trade that agility for the preservation of momentum I am getting on my bike.
@1barnet1
@1barnet1 3 года назад
This is a disturbing trend for women, Yes 29er are faster on professional athletes even the smaller ones. But i know from my rental fleet that i can't phase out 27.5" for both females under 1,65cm (which are a LOT of them) and teenagers. And that's in the Netherlands where we have among the tallest people in the world.

The French girl who dominates enduro is tiny and she does fine on a 29er. What you say makes perfect sense, but plenty of small people are using full 29ers and doing fine. Go figure. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@1barnet1
@1barnet1 3 года назад
@@jonoharper4729 True but not everyone can afford carbon rims. I can't do it as a rental service ever. XC hardtails are the first MTB people own. And affordable 29ers will be far less nimble as those 6 grand 9-11kg racing machines. For smaller riders i'd see it's a disturbing trend as i have smaller women which felt WAY more comfortable on 27,5". Same with children. We go from 24" straight to an XS with 27,5" wheels.
@mstvir
@mstvir 3 года назад
@@1barnet1 uhh, I am not sure I understand your point. I am pretty sure rim material with both weight and stiffness makes little difference to a beginner. Rim weight/wheel weight will surely help with acceleration, and may be somewhat easier to throw around. But when the person is up to speed the wheel weight won't make much difference, and if they really have the technique right, throwing both back and frontend around takes almost the same amount of force, agility is more of a technique + geometry issue not weight. Also alloy 27.5 rims and 29 rims do not vary in weight too much. It's from 20 to 60 grams so not that it makes much difference.

A friend of mine told me that an Enduro bike should have 20-30 mm less total reach (frame+stem) in comparison to an Xc bike. Isn't this idea dated? Then how should I determine the stem length in relation to the frame? Should It be related to head angle and rear centre? Like sould a steeper bike with longer chainstays run a longer stem related to a different bike, mantaining a same total reach?

These 26 inch bikes are usually quite compact, they are relatively short and you can get them into a car where a 29 inch has far too big wheels to fit into a trunk. Also the wheels are extremely stable, nothing beats a small 26 inch wheel with 36 spokes in stability due to the bigger angles of the spokes in axial direction

However, I have 2 26 inch bikes, one bought preowned with the purpose to be compact and with stable wheels, including simple V brakes, because the bike is gonna to be used in remote areas in the Indian Himalayas where you be on your own without bike shops and a possibility to get spare parts within 100 km. Merry christmas too

68 to 70 deg yes so much better Just wish EMTB chose those angles. This dash to chopper 60 deg is just ridiculous. I am even considering an offset headset to get back towards 70 deg

I didn’t know there were so many different bikes. I was just looking for a bike to casually ride any where . Is a cross country bike good for that? Or should I get a different bike

#AskGMBNTech. Does stopping power decrease as ur wheel size increases? I noticed that my old bike, a 27.5, with 2 piston tektro brakes, stopped significantly quicker than my new bike, a 29er, with the same brakes. Is it just me, or is this real?

I use a cross-country hard tail on mixed roads. I intend to go tubeless when I have enough budget for a good rim.

I just went tubeless and i can't see myself going back to tubes. Cornering feels a lot safer, and i think I can feel the weight difference. Not sure how it affects pure road riding though.

I did a full week with bags on a Scalpel SI, no dropper. It worked out just fine. If I was to change anything I would keep 100mm full sus but wear a larger backpack/frame bag and put a dropper on instead of a large seat bag.

i think some of that "weight saving" is just madness, apparently people ride shorter handle bars to save weight O_0
@MarcosAlcazar
@MarcosAlcazar 3 года назад
I don't think that's the case anymore, I believe riders prefer better handling nowadays, maybe in the past it did happen. What you can find is people changing BOLTS from aluminum to titanium to save weight 🤣
