The idea of dot size with the same needle configuration is so useful... Explains some of the struggles I've been having between my coil and direct drive rotary machine... Thank you so much
This make me think about stretching.. it may as well be the way you stretch the skin that gives you the smaller dot. I've noticed that when I don't stretch that much when using rotaries it gives me thicker lines. It may also be related to the direction of the stretch itself.
Very informative. Thanks for explaining the differences so well. Would love to see more content like this comparing and contrasting the differences in equipment and machine types of all kinds.
Hey guys - I love both of you! It’s me, Brett! You guys are both wizards and I’m humbled to meet and collect work from you both. Definitely learned a ton at the show. See you guys next year!
Will you guys comment about Lacenano machine? I was so happy to see it in this video because I've been using it for 2 years now and would love to know "science" behind it. Nice video, love technique ep !
Great video series guys! 👌🏽👌🏽 One question: could you guys tell me which pen style rotary machine is the most powerful on the market right now? Need solid lines with needlesizes from 7rl to 11rs. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Awesome interview! For someone getting in doing SMP (head tattoo) do you feel machines w less ‘give’ ie direct dive are more suitable for shallow, small dot work? If so would greatly appreciate any equipment recommendation! Thanks!
I’ve been struggling with give and what I prefer since buying my swashdrive Vader it’s an amazing machine and feel like it’s improved my work. It’s got 20 give adjusting clicks. I’m way over thinking it all, somedays it works like a dream other days it feeling like things are taking way longer than they should compared to when I was using coils. I’ve gone from coils to direct drive pen to this machine and I’m questioning my whole career knowledge 😂
Any thoughts on the CNC adjustable P6 vs the direct to drive Q2? The latter has a German motor akin to the Bishop and is positively reviewed bit don't know much about the former
Is it true that you have to use a bigger liner for a rotary than you would a coil? I was told that I'd I use a 3rl on a coil then I should use a 5rs on a rotary for the same line weight is that true?
Quite interesting. I am looking to purchase a new machine. I currently have a Mast Tour Pro, and it's done quite well. But I've been looking at the Peak Nebula vs the Peak Azur Slider. Both are rotary. The slider comes with 3.5 stroke and 2 motors you can change out. While the Nebula is a direct drive with adjustable stroke from 0-4. Most of the work I am doing is black&gray. Not quite sure which I should go with. Does it really matter all that much? Once I'm comfortable with either I'm sure I'd be happy with whatever.
I’m so confused after seeing this... I use maximin give to do light shadows. Direct to pac solid color or black.. but this man is telling us that give packs more color ???? Wtf
He is talking about the difference in machine power used in combination with give and coloring. If your rotary has more power and has "give" then it will pack a lot of color quickly. I think. If I'm interpreting your question correctly and assuming the correct info based on this informative video.
Great points and tips in this video. Now i under why my buddy at work is scared to do shading cause all he uses are direct drive tattoo machines like the Spektra. He uses Cheyenne HAWK PEN for color packing. He has been making good lines but afraid to shade. As an apprentice he yet has not used a coil machine.
What about the throw distance of the machine and the effect of dot size? I like using machines with more throw length like 3.8-4.2mm. Does a shorter throw length affect the dot size?
I dont think it affects the dot size.. but just gives you more room to work with.. Ive only been using rotaries about a year or so and Im rather new on it. i use the Axys Fehu direct drive machines and I messaged the company about his setups and he explained it to me... I have the 3.5 machine and the 2.5 mm machine.. he said on the 3.5 its more for color work or packing solid fields.. the 2.5 is a more softer machine for black and grey and its faster which means the dots will be "closer" together at the same voltage than say the 3.5. I know on the 3.5 when i shading, or pack something in i adjust my tube tip to where I want the needle to come out. I rarely have it flush down at the tube tip and it seems to pack in quicker and shade faster than if I had the full 3.5 going. I dont do that as much on my 2.5 because the distance is so shallow as it is. I hope that made sense. But it is direct drive..no give so that might explain why color work takes a little longer than black and grey according to this video. But for straight up linework i typically like using my coils
David Nash I use the axys fehu as well with 4.0 mm of throw. It packs color pretty well and I can even line with it, but I’m thinking of getting a new machine. Inkjecta im thinking
Andrew Hanson Yes a 3.2 technically will leave a smaller dot than a 4.2 shorter throw will generally lead to a smoother less aggressive cycle or hit as well.
@@andrewhanson9251 oh cool! ive been using axys for about 6 months or so and I dig it.. I havent really sampled around with rotaries much but ive heard good things about inkjecta too :)
David Nash hey thats really interesting. Do you feel the shorter stroke gives you a smoother blend for black and grey ? I am thinking about buying a shorter stroke for my xion
I have a fk irons spektra edge and i find it difficult to pack solid black unless i had the voltage higher, like in the 9,10 range. Is that to be expected?
sweaty sweaty cheeses Not really. Just a little give should pack well. but you may have the stroke fully open. I think it is 4 or 4.2 mm . So shorten it a bit and you will see better saturation at lower volts. The voltage equals speed and if you can’t saturate good without running it faster it may be because of the cycle time of the longer stroke. It’s a great machine but I think they should make changeable cams as the adjustable one makes it too hard for artists to find what they like.
Worldwide tattoo came out with radical lux tattoo pen. Debating on the Motor: A - 12V Faulhaber 2607 & 10000 RPM (Operating Voltage: 6V to 12V) Wondering what your thoughts are on this specific pen. It's really new but would like your insight if i may.
If anyone is still commenting on this I wanna get some opinions.... eccentric wheel or direct drive for lining???let's say 3.5mm to 4mm stroke.your answer and explanation if possible.hopefully I'll get some answers
I'm a little confused here inkjecta for example that things way better than let's say a xion but the jectas a DD with no give and the xion has adjustable give and personally it sucks balls for packing
Did he ever take apart a RotaryWorks machines? Recently bought one to replace my first unreliable no name coils and I'd love to know more about my machine, to know my tool, so I can use it better. Much appreciated ✌
Which one? They have direct drives, new crank cam machine, slimline which is kind of cam/slider machine with no give, springer has give, then they have pen machine.
Minifusel Not theirs but most Rotaries are easy to identify and break down and fall into simple categories so DM me pics of what you’ve got to @typ.art on Instagram and I can help. Although most look different on the outside the principles are basic and standard to one another.
@@typallotta756 hope too /cause i believe dragonafly rotaries worth mentioned ..i have one long time now tested in thousands of work hours literally .exeptional machinery ..now i did modified for catridges and its really nice , and trustworthy machine.personally iam a coil fan ...but each style needs its own equipment yes ? its a liittle tiring to see all this trend about equipment.........- 24 years ago we did everything with 2-3 machines and its was ok also .. ii believe industry evolves in the expense of the pioniring and no new tattoo artist takes the time ,through trial and error to find out technical info about needles , machinery , pigments etc ..i really enjoyed the video cause iam allways learning and there is allways room for evolution and new knowledge ..so i have two requests my friend ..1- make one video in depth analysis about diferrent type of mchines (direct , give , or no give machines and why ) 2 -dragonfly machines pro cons and why did these machines survived in market through the war of marketing .. great job thoygh ..about the explainetaion ..iam using a lot of your videos (hope this is ok )for my students .. thanks for the repply and for the oppertunity to ask for this favour . thank you
Educational, but I feel this information needs to be less free to the public, and made available to professionals only.. which is very challenging on RU-vid. Too many specifics. You need to create a seminar system like Seth Ciferri's Machine Machine, and prevent "trade secrets" from becoming public knowledge. My two cents.
Paul Carlson Thanks for your feedback Paul. I am discussing rotary types and how I see them. These are my opinions on how they work. No trade secrets here, just common sense. Wait, who gave the public professional tattoo equipment in the first place?🤔The pot is now up to 4 cents.
