What is a DMZ? (Demilitarized Zone)

A DMZ, or demilitarized zone, is used to help improve the security of an organization’s network by segregating devices, such as computers and servers, on the opposite sides of a firewall. And setting up a DMZ in your home router designates a device as a DMZ host and will forward all the ports to that device.

This is what schools are supposed to be: Good old-fashioned simple animations with commentaries crystal clearly breaking down complex concepts and emulating them into real-world practices. No bs, just what it is, how it works, and what it brings about. I dont mind writing essays, but I do mind writing essays for professors to assess who cant clarify the simple difference between Ipv4 vs Ipv6. Boy i was 5mins in the lecture and started googling and got everything I needed from this channel...

Most people have to use 2 sometimes even 3 4 or 5 sources to study for each IT cert they get. This is cause not everyone explains stuff in a way you understand. So each source might only explain some of it in a way you understand. That's why to learn it all for a cert people use many sources. If it was so easy for everyone to understand instantly then IT people wouldnt get paid well if just anyone could learn it without almost no struggle or effort.

He explains everything as simply and clearly as possible so that even beginners are not confused. Sometimes I have the feeling with him that my grandma who has nothing to do with it could understand him. Keep up your great job!

This video is amazing!! During my Network + studies, they talk a lot about NOT using Demilitary zones on corporate networks and i don't understand why?? This video explains it's uses and why it's beneficial. Also, NOBODY has every explained(except this video, smiles) how the DMZ is utilized in a home router setup. The XBOX example is very pertinant and is a great example of how to use that feature at home.

Another way to visualize a DMZ is to think about a fast food restaurant. The DMZ is the area where customers can come and order food, but they do not have access to the back rooms where management sits. The first firewall to access the DMZ would be the door to get into the restaurant and the second firewall would be the door to get to the area where the management sits.

The security professionals I know scoff at the term "DMZ" to describe any configuration other than the two-firewall arrangement starting at 3:25. An aspect of operating a DMZ that you didn't mention is that each system running in the DMZ should run an image copied from a server in the protected area, and that image should have strong reference hash associated with it. A monitor should recompute the hash for each system periodically and compare it with its reference hash. Any malware that might find its way into the DMZ will be detected by the monitor, and can be immediately replaced by its reference image in the protected area. As more people work from home in the post-pandemic era, the demand for increased security will escalate. Many or most employers require their home workers to use an employer-provided system for company work. That system should NEVER be on the same private network as the other devices in the home - especially if any of those devices is accessible from outside. The proper configuration of a home network might be a good candidate for its own video. The security professionals I work with recommend one firewall at the connection to the outside, and another firewall for the devices from each employer (a home with two remote workers would therefore have at least three firewalls). The result is a private network segment for each employer, with shared resources on another private network. Any cloud-facing device is configured in the (real) DMZ.

A very good explanation! What i dont understand is what you mean by "inside" and "outside" the firewall. Most network firewalls have multiple legs/interfaces you can configure into security zones of different levels, so that you can create a zone for the dmz in your terms "inside" the firewall, without it being on the same zone or even subnet as the rest of your lan. If you are setting up a dmz with your topologi using only one firewall you will not have any control of the network activity on your dmz, as you have your dmz "outside" the firewall. I belive that the dmz should have some sort of security. Not trying to be a smarty, just trying to educate myself and others. I think your videos are really good!
@DrHarryT
@DrHarryT 5 лет назад
I was actually taught to use two routers. The first router is the frontline firewall. This router (port 1) is connected to the WAN input of the second router. (disable wireless feature if it has it) Then a computer is connected to (port 2) of that router, set to always on and with random files that look like they mean something, if possible include malware. :-) This computer is called a "honey pot" and should be set on the first router as the DMZ host...Then router #2 is the one that supports your home network via LAN cables and or secure wireless. Now they have to fight to get past the first firewall and if they do they find the honey pot which is a deterrent from any additional searching. If they do, then they have to get through a second firewall to get to the internal network. Make sure all the firmware on the routers have the latest updates.
