The quarter horse I bought for my 8 year old daughter, I rode for a while. I TRIED to make this horse spook and he wouldn’t. Perfect for my beginner daughter. He never hurt her and that’s what I wanted. She also used him later on for hunter jumper. Everyone wanted to ride Dakota. Plus she could take her friends on back with her.

In my opinion a broke horse is a horse that is consistent in responding to what you're asking them to do ❤️

I agree with you.....to go beyond being a broke horse they need fine tuning to continue to any event like Western Pleasure, Reining, Cutting etc. When finished at their "sport" they are truly a trained horse.

To my mind, a "green broke" horse, like "green" wood needs some seasoning time. They can be caught, saddled, and ridden without big problems, they are responsive to commands but they need micromanaging because they don't quite know what their job is and are still learning the cues. EXAMPLE: You can use a green horse to push cows from pasture to pasture with a lot of guidance to keep them behind the herd and moving side to side at the right speed. They won't be as effective at handling breakaway cows as a well broke ranch horse because they haven't learned "chase the cow you are pointed at until I tell you to stop".

I bought a 4 year old mare a few years ago who was green broken...i couldnt saddle her up and mount her if she could see the other horses grazing nearby...i would have to lead her half a kilometer away out of sight so i could mount her and have some form of control steering her in the direction i wanted her to go but i always ended up letting her head back down towards the other horses and when we got there, she woukd t budge anymore so i would have to dismount and walk her back over the hill again where i would again pull myself into the saddle and back down the hill she would go and stop dead again after reaching the other horses. She never bucked or reared up but she was frightening as hell to ride because she was scared of trails whilst trail riding, she couldnt be safely ridden if dogs were barking, there was a strong breeze, or she was unfamiliar with her surroundings. .besides she was so powerful as a friend of mine found out the hard way when attempting to ride her along a quiet bush trail by themselves...despite my strong warning to keep her at a walking pace and not to trot or canter her, i told my friend to just go slow and steady and just see how far she could ride her before she began playing up, off they went...about 12 minutes later they returned only my friend was on foot leading the horse behind her...she was clearly still unsteady as she told me what had happened She told me she had softly kicked her and took her into a brief trot before she went into a canter of her own accord and my friend said she went beautifully for about 20 seconds or so then, she changed direction suddenly and galloped straight up a rocky incline and my friend had no control over her, couldnt pull her to a stop, couldn't turn her away from the dangerous jagged rocks she was sprinting between, and she told me she thought she was going to die for half a minute...my horse was freaking out, and at a full gallop but nothing had set her off, one minute cantering beautifully next minute uncontrollable and bolting scared My friend then managed to bring her to a stop where she quickly dismounted and that was that. She siad that a horse that is completely green in every aspect is the scariest experience shes ever had...i had an inkling the mare was not used to trail rides or any riding really which is why i told her to stay at a walking pace, and i was slightly annoyed that she didnt listen to me and it could have ended alot worse, if she had come out of the saddle or the horse might have stumbled on a large rock as she bolted and broken her leg...anything. I had bought this beautiful young black horse who I ended up scared of as well, because of how head strong she was...if she didnt want to do something, she wouldn't.. I had no training experience and she continued to fight me every step of the way. I bought her for pleasure riding and trail riding...and managed neither, she is going to waste in a paddock because i had no idea what to do to train her into enjoying the ride, and not fearing being ridden

When I was a kid back in the late 1960's I did many of the things that you are doing esp in regard to having my horse(s) pay attention to me while riding. It is amazing how well they learn to pay attention. I was working once with a long, spindly legged walking horse mare who didn't know much about anything and I was working her in a round pen on backing up, just as you are doing here. I was using a bit of some kind and I would put a little pressure on her reins and she would strain her neck forward in protest. I don't recall yanking her or anything like that because that was not something I would do but for some reason when I was putting pressure on her reins she reared and fell over on her back. Being young and quick I landed on both feet but I realized she could have accidently killed or injured me. I put some of that response on mare behavior and upon myself for getting in a hurry with her but out of caution for a repeat performance I didn't go back to that sole method of working with her. Most people at that time would verbally "shissssh" their horses back. I never cared much for that idea but I believe that might been my approach to getting her to back.

A broke horse to me is all the basics plus all the extras I won’t own a horse unless it was under a professional trainer for at least a year and has been hauled enough to be easy when I haul no matter where I want to go. I own an ex-cutter and an ex-Reiner both of my mares are dream horses I might be a little picky 🤣

@horsecrazy Where's the fun in that? I'm not into push buttons. I love it when the horse almost becomes one with you, and you can ride with your body.

My definition of a broke horse is when the whole body is soft and it does whatever you ask of him,

what is the difference in a BIT BROKE versus a PLOW BROKE horse? I always thought a plow broke meant NO BIT. Guided by neck reigning Is that right? Are you kind of saying Plow broke is the same as Reign broke. thanks

I don't use either of those terms because they leave too much to the interpretation of each person.

Getting him moving forward with less effort.... does this just come with more rides? I am starting a horse for the first time, but I find she really is hard to move forward when she doesn't want to move. She's very lazy. Do I just squeeze and wait?
@timandersonhorsetraining

I've done several videos on that with horses in various stages. Look for titles something like Teaching a horse its go cue, How to ride a lazy horse, and Using cows to get a horse to trot. There are probably more but those are the 3 that come to mind.

A Broke horse, one you can safely ride, gives to pressure, neck reins, stops from the seat, ride with legs, familiar with spurs, change speeds at different gaits, pick you up off mounting block, picks up correct lead, to me this is a broke horse. Your definition to me is green broke, you can ride them safely, and that is about it.
@kidstuff44555
@kidstuff44555 2 года назад
I guess it depends on discipline, for instance a broke horse for a child to take to Pony Club doesn't need to neck rein, be familiar with spurs or even stop off the seat if it can be easily stopped with the reins... it may still be a perfectly safe and suitable broke horse
@alfredthames9014
@alfredthames9014 2 года назад
@@kidstuff44555 true, it all depends what you want or need, but for me this is basic for every horse i own regardless of what discipline i ride him or her in,

How about using the term gentled, or started instead of broke. Such an outdated ,negative term suggesting damage to a horse . Hate the term broke!😨

A horse is not a pair of shoes. I too detest the term “broke” when applied to a horse! Does it involve breaking the horse’s spirit, too?
@JosephOjea316
@JosephOjea316 2 месяца назад
@@judithmiller6670 no. I honestly don’t know what breaking a horses spirit means. You think you break a horses spirit by putting a saddle on him and riding him? I don’t. But, your horse, your way! ❤️
