The lucky number "sieve" was developed by the legendary Stanislaw Ulam, who was born and died on the 13th of the month (lucky number) at the age of 75 (lucky number)... and his birth year of 1909 saw the release of a film called The Lucky Number. Just saying! ;)

In this algorithm the surviving numbers were considered lucky numbers, it's the same as calling 7 a happy number, the number 7 isn't really happy, it's just that it fit within the algorithm for happy numbers.

Oh, now I see. That makes alot of sense these numbers are lucky because they weren't eliminated. Not lucky as in that supernatural concept. Thanks for clearing that up. So, that mean I can make a diffrent algorithm and generate lucky numbers totally different from the one she generated.

My lucky number(s) are 3 and multiples of it. Especially 21 which is 3 and 7(another known lucky number) any time I use 21 as a number in a game I end up winning, like in a raffle

The Sieve of Eratosthenes does the same for primes, but when every number would be eliminated by the 1, it is omitted from the list. I would suggest that 1 is not lucky for the same reason: it would cause all other numbers to be eliminated. This would also mean that 2 would be the first lucky number, and the only even one. Just like primes.

Algebra has tons of uses. You'll be guaranteed to use it any career that uses numbers at all. Even something not directly related to maths. If it had no point then it wouldn't be taught.

The first time, with no numbers eliminated, the number closest to 1 is 2. So she counts 1,2,1,2,1,2 all the way through and eliminates every number that was on a 2. Then, for the second iteration, with 2 being gone, the next closest number to 1 is 3. So she repeats the process, counting 1,2,3,1,2,3 and eliminates every 3rd number. So she's not really changing her algorithm, but it just so happens that the algorithm deletes the rule it used for its first iteration IN its first iteration

No - you get to 1 which would mean "remove every number". This is impractical because you would have nothing left, so you move on to 2 which means "remove every second number", which is therefore your first step.

"Lucky" is an arbitrary term that they used for the numbers in this series. 13 is not "known" to be unlucky, it's believed to be unlucky by some people (others consider 13 to be lucky in the sense that you're using the terms.)

73 is the luckiest. 73 is the 21st prime number, and the non prime multiples of 21 are 3 and 7. 73 reversed is 37, which is the 12th prime number. Seeing the connections? I think they are cool.

I have a lucky number and a lucky number combination... my lucky number is 7, while my lucky number combo is 2, 5, 11, 13. I came up with it when playing my first lottery ticket as a kid, so it's just a "random" thing for me.

S/he hasn't explicitly said why 69 might be "lucky"; s/he's just suggested that it is. They cannot determine anything inappropriate from that statement alone. Innuendos are deemed ok for daytime television in most countries (most crucially, the UK and US), and for this very reason. It only suggests what you already know about. In fact, by objecting, you're probably doing more damage than him/her, as you're suggesting it means something. You and the 139 people that liked the comment, anyway.

I had a similar technique for trying to finding lucky whole numbers. But my mathematical algorithm started with 1 and eliminated EVERY number in the sequence.

i feel sorry for the number 13, got given this stigma that it is unlucky. but the phrase states that 12 is unlucky for some. therefore that surely means its a lucky number but for the "some" its unlucky.

Actually, 31 is NOT a pentagonal number and that is not really how you work out the pentagonal numbers. Its close though, but not quite right. The actual Pentagonal numbers are 1, 5, 12, 22, 35... Search it up if you dont believe me :)

From the pentagonal drawing, you can derive that 31 is "111" in base 5. It is also "11111" in base 2. Looking at the list of lucky numbers they include "111" in various bases, but not all bases ("111" base 7 is 57, base 9 is 91, base 12 is 157 which are not in the list). The list also includes the binary (base 2) numbers 11, 111, 1111, 11111 ... again with some holes: 255 not included for example. I'm curious to know more about this series and its connection with prime numbers. Cheers from Italy and thank you for your videos! =)

SHE didn't decide... it is from a 1955 paper by Stanislaw Ulam (and others) who is quite a big name in mathematics... I think "lucky" just refers to it surviving the elimination process. There is more online about it and the relation to prime numbers, etc.

my lucky number is 6 mostly becuase out of 1-10 you can't pick the first(1), last(10) middle(5) or other common lucky numbers(3,7) which leaves 2,4,6,8. if you add up the proceding number you get 2=2, 2+4=6, 2+4+6=12. which leaves 6 and 2, two is special enough because not only is it prime but it is base even so It gets enough attention. I pick 6. My math has no logic

31 is not a pentagonal number. It's a CENTERED pentagonal number. It's also a centered pentagonal prime, and a centered triangular prime.

I'd love for someone to explain to me what pattern she's using on the first time around. If you go by what turn it is, she should've started with 1 and eliminated every number. Seeing as how that's rather stupid, I can understand why that wasn't done. Instead she started with the second number in the set, meaning the second time around should've been the third number in the set. Seems to me like it's whatever she feels like in the beginning, unless I'm missing something.

I was always told 13 is an unlucky number, because Judas was was the 13th person at the last supper and he betrayed Jesus. Perhaps Brady could do a video combining numberphile and Bibledex :)
