I love this, listening from by Beyerdynamics cans, so I would say: - Neve, full body sound, detailed - Avalon 2022: really detailed but gentle sounding - C |24: it rings?? Idk it resonates in a really nice way. - Rolls: it sounds good but I don't fell like it added something to the sound. The piano was everything, but I was hoping for a voice demo :^(

Avalon was the only one that stood out to me on the piano. I just didn't hear a significant difference with the drums or on the piano, otherwise. I actually have a Rolls preamp. It's not the greatest but for my purposes I wouldn't notice the difference (I live in an apartment with a background noise level of about 35-40 dB). It was either get the Rolls, or the Behringer Ultragain Mic 100, and I wanted to avoid tubes if possible.

This is interesting. The differences I hear between these preamps are relatively far more subtle than the differences between: - mics - instruments and performers, and different performances - rooms So that's probably where this dabbling amateur I should invest time and money!

This is a very informative video. I have one question. I have a Mackie 1402vlz pro mixer. And I have a Fractal Ax8(Guitar Ampmodler + Multi FX) If I receive a Fractal Ax8 and a mixer connection on the XLR out-mixer's XLR input, will the sound be changed by the Mixer's mic preamp? Or is it better to connect the mixer with a 1/4 cable to the Line input? Thank you for your reply!
@MrBinthestudio
@MrBinthestudio 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching! Actually, the line and mic input on a 1402 are routed into the same preamp, so the signal's hitting the preamp either way. But if your Fractal is outputting a line level signal, it would be best to put it in the line input to avoid distortion.

Great video! I have a question. I want to build a device that allows a mic signal to be heard through headphones and a console as well. I was thinking about splitting the mic signal input into a headphones output (with headphones amp added to it) and a console output (since the console has a preamp built in). Do you think this would work? Thanks in advance.
@MrBinthestudio
@MrBinthestudio 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! Yes, basically you're just making a Y-cable. As long as the headphone amp has a mic pre built into it (or preceding it) it should work fine. You could also use an aux on your console to send signal to the headphone amp, but that may or may not meet your workflow needs.

The Rode NTK is a tube mic, so that box that you plug into is actually the power supply for the vacuum tubes. You will still need to plug the output of the Rode's power supply into a preamp. The preamps on your focusrite should work just fine. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!

I have very good ears, I also have perfect pitch. I've been recording bands on a DIY budget for the past 25 years or so and have been through a lot of gear. I tend to stick with the basics, SM57's, SM58's and a few other simple mics, mostly under $200 range. Actually lately since china is cloning lots of shure products i've been able to build up a pretty sick array of mics. I am calling BS on expensive mic preamps. The only reason I can see that anyone would use one is to get a more "vintagey" sound. It seems as if preamps from the mid 90's to today are mostly "great" quality, meaning, they don't hum or hiss or add any kind of nonsense to the signal, and you are able to bring mic's up to a level that your interface can interpret them and turn them into wav files which can be manipulated to sound like ANYTHING you want! The only use for expensive mic pre's that I can see, is for people that don't have enough creative energy to fatten up their mix with creative EQ/Compression/Automation/Saturation. They may not understand how to get a punchy sound in post processing, so they turn to an industry tool that was designed originally for analog tape tracking. Or maybe they just need racks full of pre's to stumble upon that magic take. I dunno but, if I can't hear the need for a $2000 mic pre, how the hell is the listener going to be able to hear it? And even if they could, would it matter?

hi, it is good to learn on this pre-amp. i am searching for ways to improve our audio in our small local congregation. i seems our goose mike would not produce the same volume when using laptop for audio source. my friend recommended me to try adding pre-amp between mixer and amplifier. however i learned on your video that mixer gain knobs do this pre amp function already. now, i wish to confirm that for matching impedance of speakers and amplifier the right way to understand it. some internet video would say it is preferable to have the amplifier power rated 25% to 50% than that of the speaker. while in a music store they will they me that the speaker should have bigger power rating than the amplifier. which one should i accept then? many thanks, and best regards to you, william
@MrBinthestudio
@MrBinthestudio 4 года назад
Thanks for watching! For choosing an amplifier, I would never under-power. It is better to be matched, or slightly over-powered. Make sure to also pay attention to impedance. If you have two 8-ohm speakers in parallel, the amp is seeing a 4-ohm load. That means if the amp is rated at 500-watts into a 4-ohm load, you are actually providing 250-watts for each speaker.

What is the difference between a DI box and a preamp? And how do u use them for recording ?
@MrBinthestudio
@MrBinthestudio 4 года назад
A preamp is taking mic level signal up to line level, and a DI box is doing the opposite. Usually people use a DI box when they want to input a signal from a guitar, bass, or keyboard directly into a mic preamp.

I figured it's obvious to you... but I'm starting a Drum channel to show my progression picking up a new instrument. So this is absolutely helpful to me as I am recording more than Drums over all. As I progress to find other members to jam with and create.... this is something I'm currently educating myself in. I have built everything from the ground up and started one year ago. I will be working on mastering the sound of the drums with the sound booth and drum booth. I am also looking at compressors along side of the pre-amps. I used to be a truck driver and I dropped everything in life to be happy. I quit driving to follow my dreams and what do you know... I was serious and life made the way for me.
