The electrical components inside enclosures that house industrial automation systems like PLCs often operate on a 24 volt power supply. So in these enclosures we usually need one or several power supplies that each have a 24 volt output voltage.
But in some applications where ultra-reliability is essential, and an unexpected loss of power would be disastrous we need to use “redundant power supplies”.
In this video we’re going to learn exactly how these types of power supplies work from a practical perspective.

That was very nice , i love your videos and specially your way of explaining things. Please upload a video of example program on using analogue inputs and outputs in S7 300 PLC's the same way you did for Mixer but in this program use Analogue input and outputs, for better understanding of Simatic 7... Thanks PS: Keep up the good work :)

Tepergy, I appreciate your work which have proved very helpful for me. I have one problem in PLC could you build ladder logic for sequence 1. (A+ D+), (B+ C+), (A- D-), (B- C-) here A&C is operated by double solenoid and D&B is operated by single solenoid. 2. The following operator controls must be incorporated: a. SW1 will be used to select between single or continuous cycles. b. PB1 will be used to start the sequence in either operating mode. c. PB2 will be used to stop the sequence (at rest position) in continuous mode.

I just wonder if it is necessary to use a diode module of the same brand as the power supplies. And thank you for your effort.
@realpars
@realpars 8 месяцев назад
Hi there, Thank you for your question. It's not necessary to use the same brand of equipment as long as the technical specifications, such as current and voltage, align. However, it's important to exercise caution, as certain power supplies may feature wired output relays that are connected to a monitoring station or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to alert operators in case of a failure. When considering factors like cost and engineering specifications, it's generally advisable to adhere to the original design, unless the power supply has become obsolete, in which case an upgrade would be necessary. Happy learning!

For an S7-300, the redundancy module number is 6EP1961-3BA20. There may be other PSU combinations available.

What is the difference between the redundant power supply you have here, and a dual redundant power supply?
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
In this video, there is a voltage detection circuit that switches power to the devices from one power supply to the other when a power issue is detected at the primary power supply. This is a sophisticated and efficient way to provide continuous power to the panel, maintaining surge protection and other safeguards on a power-supply-specific basis. Another way to provide redundant power is to connect both supplies in parallel to the loads without a switching circuit. This is not as efficient since each supply will run at a reduced load, and a catastrophic failure of either power supply could bring the entire power supply system down (surge could trip both power supplies' breakers).

So in all cases does only one power supply carry the full load ? I mean is there a case where the load is shared between the PS ?
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
Yes, depending on the hardware used, either one power supply is used at a time (redundant configuration), or both are used in parallel. Connecting 2 power supplies in parallel, even with current-directing diodes, is not the most efficient use of the power supplies. One problem is the result of one supply failing or the output circuit faulting/short-circuiting. The other problem is that no two power supplies are identical, so the one with the higher voltage will provide more of the power in a parallel arrangement. The only practical reason for parallel operation is to boost output current. In that case, use a larger power supply. It is the safest and most efficient. If you are worried about reliability, use a redundant power supply configuration with a diode “ORing” module to switch from one power supply to the other when there is a failure. This will maximize performance and power supply life.

They have different power source. Don't they?
@realpars
@realpars Год назад
There is a single source of AC power to the panel. Power supplies are used to convert AC to 24 VDC to be used by the different PLC and I/O circuits in the panel. Some devices, such as the HMI panels, use the 120 VAC power directly. We use breakers to provide the means of isolating the different AC and DC circuits.
