A 7-year-old girl died and her brother was left in critical condition after they fell into a sand hole and got trapped Tuesday at a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Now, a Florida professor is explaining the dangers of digging sand holes and what parents should know to keep kids safe at the beach.

Once some friends dug a pretty deep hole at the beach and one of the guys jumped in there and said bury me, and sat in it with his legs crossed Indian style so they buried him with his head out and almost immediately after they finished burning him he started trying to get out. This guy is 6’4 athletic 215lbs and he struggled so hard that the boys started laughing thinking it was funny and dude had a panic attack and even with him trying to free himself and 5 guys trying to dig him out it took a long time to get him out. He couldn’t breathe, the sand was so heavy. I can’t imagine what these parents are going through, what an absolute tragedy. Rest in peace sweet angel ❤️

I think signs should be posted on beaches, warning people of the potential risk of these things happening. Not everyone knows that this can happen. 😢

you cant prevent stupidity and you cant regulate everything. I know people arent too smart but if someone have to teach you everything, then sometimes these things happen. The parents should be smart enough to know that the kid shouldnt have dug so deep . If they didnt know, then this is a terrible way to learn

When I was young, maybe 13-15 a similar situation happened in my town where teens were digging tunnels into the sand at a lake. Fast forward my kids are at the beach, I walk up to find they had “buried” my youngest up to her neck, not completely vertical, but I kind of freaked out. However I stayed calm and said hey guys, this isn’t safe, let’s get her up and out of there! I am so sad for this family, people just don’t know.

I grew up in landlocked Kansas and somehow I knew that sand doesn't stick together well, so don't dig any holes in it. I do a lot of reading, so perhaps I read this somewhere.

Truly tragic. Grew up on the atlantic coast -- now I know why are parents never let us dig a hole deeper than about 8 inches and about a foot wide. Strangely I never asked why but taught my kids the same.

I study history and I've heard of this, but not on a beach with dry sand. A little kid accidently built a grave and nobody had the sense to stop her. A lot of cultures actually dig into the ground to build survival and traditional structures. I've seen kids tunnel into soil and snow and that is very common. Sand is another story.

@@purplespeckledappleeater8738 I suspect there may have been a certain amount of water in that sand, and it held together long enough to form walls on the side. Otherwise, if sand is totally dry, it just runs back into the hole. I don't think you could dig a large hole with sides. Just my thoughts.

That's why they use "shoring" on the sides of ditches, when they're digging to install buried utility lines. They looser the soil, ie., sandy or loamy vs clay based, the easier it is for the sides to collapse.

When I was a kid, I went to the beach. I dug a hole so deep, I saw it was hollow underneath. It was scary. I was glad I was not hurt. I never dug a hole ever again. My condolences to this family.

There was something more to hear than just falling into a hole that hadn't been filled in correctly. Cuz he didn't say she dug the hole he said the hole was dog in the past and wasn't filled in correctly and then she fell in and it collapsed. Makes no sense. There's more to it

@@djajax35 The little girl and her brother dug a hole in the beach. She was down about 5 feet. That is huge, at that depth you need to push out the opening out about 10 to 20 feet to keep the sand from collapsing in. So at the surface the opening would be 20 feet across and at the bottom 2 or 3 feet wide. A mild grade not a steep. We hear about construction workers dying the same way on job sites when the do not use a steel box frame to keep the earth in place. Not only is sand heavy it squeezes you so tight you can not inflate your lungs. So yes Thank you Professor a man of Wisdom and kind enough to pass on his thoughts to folks who did not know about this.

Sorry for the familys' loss. In Oregon we have have a few kids die from making sand caves into the dunes in the last few years and then they collapsed.

@@Nick-zo6uk there have been several cases over the past couple decades of beach trips turning tragic. Every so often, they pop up in national news stories following people, usually teens, tunneling on the beach during trips to the ocean. They are unusual, which is why they are rarely heard of, but because of how easy it is for an 'innocent' tunnel to turn deadly, that is why they are reported on national news stories.

It's not that, if you dig a hole deeper then your standing height if it collapses you die. There is no way out. At any construction site where there is a hole or trench you will see precautions taken in the event of collapse from solid steel frames to sloping of the hole itself. If dirt or even snow collapses on youin enough volume you are done.

Reminds me of a area around the Great Lakes. Over a period of many years, old forests near the water can get covered over by sand dunes leaving large tree trunks buried in over 20 feet of sand. Gradually ants will eat the old trees below the sand leaving a softened hollowed tube not visible from the surface. One person, who was dug out and saved, fell 12 ft. into one. Other people have just dissappeared in the area.

A friend from Texas I had met at a conference, died in Florida digging sand tunnels for some strange reason that I wonder if was like a medical condition related to AHI's. Like why would you dig a sand tunnel? Anyone with a sane mind would know, not to dig in sand unless maybe sand stone. There is quick sand as well, that like swimming, seems children should all be trained in how to deal with the range of scenarios so they know.

Truly a tragedy. I can't fathom the pain this family must be going through. In terms of rescue, it sounds like the wet sand in the vertical wall of the sand hole dries out and then collapses (since dry sand is only stable at a 33 degree angle--quite shallow), and then when you try to dig the person out of the sand, the hole keeps refilling with sand. Would it work to use buckets of ocean water to rewet the sand around the person and the wall of the sand hole, temporarily restabilizing it so it doesn't continue collapsing while you dig the person out?

I would worry if rewetting the sand immediately around the person might cause even more weight and pressure on them, but that added stability form the water a little further away might be an incredible help

I lived in daytona beach for thirty five years. Me and my kids have played in the sand and I have buried them in the sand probably a hundred times. I had no idea it was this dangerous. Now I feel like a fool

Making a one foot deep hole and covering the kids body leaving their head out to make a funny picture isn't what is dangerous. Those kids were playing in a deep hole. He said 5 to 6 feet deep. A seven year old kid couldn't even see over the top of a hole that deep. I don't understand why a hole that deep would be dug to begin with, let alone left open for kids to play in.

HEARTBREAKING. I can't imagine what this family is going through. 😢 I pray God gives them comfort as they go through the grief of this tragedy. I didn't know this was possible, however years ago while standing knee deep in water on a shoreline in the Philippines, the sand kept moving out from under my feet. It felt odd like it was pulling me down. As i found more spots that did this and it was getting harder to pull my feet out, i went to shore. Never heard of sand actually pulling one under😢 My heart goes out to this family❤

I was SHOCKED at how heavy sand is. I went to the garden center and a tall, muscular, young man slowly carried a dish pan full of slightly moist, loose sand to my car. When I got home, I tried to casually lift it from the trunk and nearly broke my back. It was only about 2 gallons of sand. I'm little so I'm not very strong to begin with but that sand definitely weighed more than an equal amount of water. And even water is heavier than I expect it to be. The man in this video isn't exaggerating when he says that sand is HEAVY!

tragic loss and so sad for the family.... it's not just digging holes in sand, beach sand cliffs are extremely dangerous too.... parents need to have a chat about the dangers of various places they visit with their kids.... beach, forest, cliffs, busy roads, electricity, water, animals, humans, all those things that pose a risk.

I remember on the Monkees tv show all four of the group were in scenes at tge beach buried up to their necks. At least holes five feet deep were dug. Didn't seem so alarming a thing back then.

From a news story, there was at least 1 adult digging. Got the impression it was a couple. So the kids didn’t dig that huge hole. Being from Indiana, they probably had no clue of the dangers. The boy was buried to his chest & he was on top of his sister.😱 So they manage to pull him out after a few minutes & then all the more sand goes on top of that little girl. SMH I know she’s w/our Savior Jesus now, & forevermore.♥✝I so hope at some point, her devastated family can be comforted by that fact, too.🕊 May He carry them through their unimaginable pain now, & for however long they need.♥🕊

I saw a video of a man getting cited by police for digging a trench (he was told to keep it less than 2 feet deep, and I guess it looked too dangerous so they came back to cite him) on a beach to let the water that collected on the beach back out to sea. He was cited for "digging holes" and I thought that was such a weird law, especially if the trapped water was causing issues for residents. No one in the comments had any idea why the law existed and just figured it was a law that existed purely for the power trip. Now I get why the law exists. This is horrifying.

Native to Miami, and we always used to dig holes at the beach as kids. I never knew this! My kids did it, too. Just wanted to add that we never dug one that deep.

So just to make sure I understood correctly..A sand hole is caused when a prior person digs a very deep hole, then they cover it up again with sand, then someone else digs in the same place, so if that's the case, how does the sand hole cave in if the hole was filled again with the sand in the first place?

A sand hole is never stable. If you are in over your head, your life is in danger, regardless of this was the original hole or not. There is really no need for a professor to explain further. Even if this kind of hole is less safe, it was never safe to begin with.

"Professor" says, "Only dig hole 2 feet, you be safe". Common me person says, "Don't listen to professor, he not know anything!" You tell a child it's ok to dig a hole in the sand if it's only 2 feet and they still try to dig all the way to China. They're just little kids. They think you mean "just be careful" and go for the gusto, or they'll want to sneak another 2 feet while you're not looking. ANY hole dug in beach sand is a danger waiting to happen. I was a child who thought danger was just something fun and nothing would suddenly happen. I'd be able to brag about doing it later!
