What is a Secondary Suite Basement? Basic Building Code Requirements? Note- As per changes in Secondary Suite requirements by City of Edmonton - No information required regarding the parking, so parking on property not required.
Hello, I made this video based on Canada Federal Guidelines. This gives you overall idea. It's best to check with your local municipality, for any local or added requirements, as it may depend on where you house is built (Community), year its built, type of house, and more Thanks
Is it required “ solid door and landing required at the bottom of the stairs” Is it mean we need 2 doors ? One at the side entrance and another one at the bottom of the stairs? Thanks
No. You need Solid door- 1. Between Main house and the Secondary Suite 2. Mechanical Room or any place where 2nd Furnace is going 3. Side Entrance. If you already have door between house and Suite, you dont need to add another at the end of the stairs
Hello, Requirement is to have 3rd parking on the property itself. Some Municipality may have different requirement depending on the area and how tight the houses are. Best is to check with your local authorities. This video is mainly based in Edmonton, Alberta. Most of the Building codes are as per National Building Codes.
@@gg52409 Hello, Yes, City of Edmonton chaged the code and i was not aware of new rules as oer which there are No Parking requirements. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
@@How2 By any chance do you know where can we find the code, if we would like to build 2 suites in the basement? Will the secondary suite code apply to both of the suites individually, meaning you will need 3 furnaces in the house?
@@gg52409 As per this link- www.edmonton.ca/sites/default/files/public-files/assets/PDF/Secondary_Suite_Design_Guide.pdf Revised in November 2022, you can't have more than 2 dwellings in the house. So one will be Main House Dwelling and 2nd will be 1 Secondary Suite. You can email City of Edmonton- Development Department at developmentpermits@edmonton.ca with your address and questions. I would be curious to know their response as well. Please keep me posted.
