I call the Stanley 79 a Richard the III because when you need it you would trade your kingdom for a side rabbet plane. I don't use it often, but when I do it is a godsend.

After using one of these a few times I treated myself to a Lee Valley Veritas Side Rabbet Plane. A bit more expensive but much more comfortable to use! I also like that it has a removable nose for getting into stopped grooves/dados. Unfortunately, there is a Lee Valley store a couple miles from me so it is too easy to spoil myself with Veritas tools. :)

Thank you. Not a Stanley, but I think you just helped me identify an odd plane body that I picked up at a garage sale.

The Stanley 79 is also an interesting tool because it can be used as a dovetail plane. You can glue an angled piece of wood to the fence or make or buy 3d printed angled fences, pretty interesting! The Record 2506 or its Preston predecessor are also great side rabbet planes.

I presume this would be along the grain for something like a batten? I would guess If you were planing a straight dado into a dovetail shape, that the edge of the nose/sole would interfere. Edit: I suppose it would also work across grain for a sliding dovetail if you sawed down prior to planing.

Looking forward to seeing the new shop, hope the move and set-up is going well. Cheers 🥳🥳🥳

I've used this plane many times. The one plane that will help fit rabbits and dados that are just a tiny bit too narrow. Don't use it all the time, but when you do, it is invaluable. The fact that there are two cutters is also nice when you are trimming longer slots, cutting in both strokes.

I saw what appeared to be a new version of that little guy. Judging by appearance it was a Lee Valley creation. It was being used the same way you showed.

I've got a Record side rebate plane. Doesn't see much action but handy to have. Good for widening the parting bead groove on sash windows

You can square up the bottom of a rabbet if its not square too. I have the Veritas and I'm improving my technique so I don't need it as much.

Thanks James for this video. What about the Record version? Also, is it useful when one makes a groove but fails in making it's walls perpendicular to the surface?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 2 месяца назад
The wall being perpendicular to the surface depends on you not on the tool. The record version works great. Though I've only used it once.

I have one and it came in extremely handy for widening router cut dados. That being said, with wide hands I found myself scraping my knuckles up quite a bit. I ended up using a leather work glove on my right hand to make it less painful in use. Any idea if the 98/99 or the Lee Valley is easier on the hands?

Don't forget you might need to flatten the tip just a little, to avoid scoring the bottom of the groove.
@jameslouder

What are the chances of tear-out as you come to the end of your stroke? I didn't see any here, but would that always be so? Should we make a little chamfer on the outboard end of the dado, just to the width we're aiming for? Or at least score the grain so we end up with a pristine edge?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

A sacrificial board or chamfer does the trick

What angle do you think is the blade? Or does it matter?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 7 месяцев назад
it does not really matter, but you do want it to be low. something under 25 degrees.

Handy tool to have. Got a few 79's and 98 and 99. Prefer the 98 and 99 'cos they are easier to hold when you have Gorilla sized hands like mine😆

I have one of these but when I got it both of the blades were not at correct angle (i.e., not 90 degrees from the bottom of the plane). Any suggestions on how to appropriate regrind the angle?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 7 месяцев назад
just push harder on the side that is too long and after a few sharpenings you will find it out of square in the other direction.

How would one handle a stopped dado that needs to be widened for a board?
@philaandrew100

You can remove the nose. It makes it a tad more janky to control but I have done it quite a few times without issues.

Where do yo get your more exotic woods?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 7 месяцев назад
Usually I don't hunt for a specific wood I just use whatever I have on hand and most of my exotic woods come from random fines over the years at estate sales and from friends. But if I need something weird and specific I can't get from a local Sawyer than I usually go to Bell Forest woods online.

I made an auxiliary fence for making sliding dovetails.
@A2woodArt
@A2woodArt 7 месяцев назад
Do you really need the fence when making dados larger? Wouldn’t it will just ride on the bottom of dado?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 7 месяцев назад
for the most part yes. but if you are taking off a lot it can be helpful so it does not slowly go deeper.
