Ever wondered if you need a steel shank in your work boots? It sure sounds tough, but it is not the best choice for everyone. In this video we will uncover the basics about what they are and when they are called for.
Any shank's main function is to ensure long-lasting structural integrity to the boot and bolster the arch support across the foot, however there is different amounts of rigidity depending on your needs.
We primarily use steel shanks in our Climber boots, for extra rigidity, while we prefer something more malleable like sturdy oak tanned leather for everyday use.

As someone who spent a ton of time on ladders and in hooks you do absolutely want a steel stank for those uses. Other than those two uses I really cant think of a time I would prefer a steel over leather shank.

Thank you so much for clarifying this. I have never preferred a steel shank except when rock climbing, and I never knew why. This makes all the sense in the world.

I’m a tower climber, I don’t stand around in my boots on the ground very long. A steel shank is great for distributing force across more of your foot to avoid pressure point injury

I'm a tower climber as well. My preferred shoe for climbing is an Addidas that looks like Vans. I appreciate the flexibility and lightweight. I'm a firm believer that the boot or shoe should be matched to the wearer first and the activity second. High performance sports and electrical safety concerns excepted.

@@JazzIs4urSoul OSHA can't see you up on the tower 😉. Still gotta wear boots when on the ground. Under Armor used to make basketball shoes that look like boots. They don't seem to anymore.

@Jazzis4urSoul: what is your favorite climbing/ lineman boot?

@@davidchang8428 I’m still trying out different ones. Right now I’m in a pair of redwing Dynaforces but I’m thinking about replacing them just because they’re not really what I want. I used to climb in Carolina Elm Loggers, personally I like soft-toe. I’m still on the lookout for something that’s the best

Thanks for explaining So your boots have both . The steel shank for rigidity then the leather shank also. That’s insane amount of support

I've worn steel toe/steel shank Redwing Loggers for 13 years. Usually got 3.5 - 4 years out of each pair, never had any issues with the shank. No comfort issues at all. My JK bison leather climbers have given me more issues with discomfort than I've had with any boots. The quality is impressive, the comfort has been a work in progress. Redwing Orthotic insoles, and loosening the laces more than I typically would in work boots has helped. Next I might take out the kilties, see if that helps. Other PNW boot wearers have suggested some sort of origami with the tongue, but I haven't tried it yet.

Try Superfeet inserts. That’s what I use in my Thorogood moc toe boots(w/ wedge sole.). I walk on concrete floor for a whole 8-10.5 shift at a Toyota plant. No issues with foot pain at all.

@@bluegrassman3040 I used Superfeet in all my boots for something like 10 years in both my combat boots and my civiy boots, I recently switch to FP insoles(yeah the FB ad ones) and the difference is insane, less back and knee pain, and no blisters after a 15km ruck with 60kgs the day after I formed them and put them in. Cant speak to long term, but even if they last the same 2ish years I got out of Superfeet I consider that a win.

Could you have the lineman leather shank without the steel piece? Would there be any point in that ? As an arborist myself its not always spike work sometimes just climbing and sometimes you gotta get om the ground.
@jkbootsusa
@jkbootsusa День назад
Yes we can do that but it's on a custom superduty 2.0 which has to be ordered through a retail location. The steel piece shouldn't make a noticeable difference on the ground, but is very beneficial when using spikes. Hopefully this helps! If you have any other questions please reach out to our customer service team at (509) 487-0154 or general@jkboots.com and they can help you out much faster!

Will the leather shank arch collapse over time? I've worn my White's for 14 years and the steel shanks have no problems other than they squeak, which is annoying if you're in a store and it's fairly quiet. I've been told that the leather shanks don't squeak but no one has ever mentioned whether or not they are durable.
@jkbootsusa

The leather shank will hold over time, notably it will form/break into your foot. There is a bit more give than steal 👍 Squeaking is from leather rubbing on leather. We add a squeak pad that stops this and they wont squeak with steal or leather!

If I am mistaken please let me know but there another type of worker that would benefit from a steel shanked climber boot which is a landscaper or a worker that use shovels a lot.
@marvin3872
@marvin3872 10 месяцев назад
I think their leather lineman shank should be enough in those situations
@Bullfrog_Assassin
@Bullfrog_Assassin 10 месяцев назад
People who don't actually use shovels, might use the arch of their foot to press them into the ground. But us "workers" who wear one out every year, use the ball of our foot.😉
