A tourbillon regulates gravity. If you travel to countries with high altitudes or mountains, the time on your watch will remain consistent. Have you ever owned a watch or a wall clock? You may have noticed that sometimes, the next day or a few hours later, the clock jumps ahead by 3 or 5 minutes. Well, the tourbillon mechanism is responsible for controlling that effect of gravity. Even if you notice, cellphone clocks do the same too, the gravity changes the cellphone time. Tourbillion technology is super advanced, they say the Mayas and Egyptians used that same mechanism to create their time and pyramids.

They still struggle with these type of activities since the shocks are too strong although some watches really are better than other with eliminating the effects.

General improvements in watch making design have helped minimize the effects of shock...however they are still present, just significantly less than what they used to be. Apart from simple improvements such as materials used, number of jewel bearings, and so on...the most significant is the beat rate (ticks per hour)...this higher this value, the more accurate a watch is and more immune it is to shock.

Kind of like how an automotive differential works. The mechanism of a differential does simply one thing: It makes the wheels twist in opposite directions. That's all it does, and all it can do. So why don't the wheels on your car spin in opposite directions, then? Won't power from the transmission to the axle cause the differential to turn the wheels? But the truth is: The transmission doesn't turn the car's axle-- _it turns the entire differential_ over and over. There's a ring gear surrounding the differential and the driveshaft connects to that ring. The differential is free to twist the axle in opposite directions while the car exerts its force on the housing which surrounds the differential.

Like I said it used to be usable and important with pocket watches since they were worn vertically on the body, nowadays it is in my opinion a matter of other factors, like aesthetical appeal etc.
