Wow. It looks like a Kazakh dombra but with a slight twang like a sitar. I live in Kazakhstan and the similarities with Kazakh culture is very apparent. My wife is Kazakh and we had a layover in Ürümqi on our way from Almaty, Kazakhstan to Thailand for vacation. Actually we were stranded due to flight cancellations and delays so we made the most of it and explored a bit. She could actually speak Kazakh with local Uyghurs and they understood her and she understood them! She said she could understand about 70% of what the Uyghur man said- enough to get directions to the nearest Lagman restaurant!

I never knew Kazakh could understand Uyghur. I mean I do know they are in the same turkic language family. For me as a Turk is still pretty hard to understand Uyghur people. While I do fully understand for example Turkmen people. But offcourse there are a lot of similar Uyghur words in the Turkish language. Which again is normal because both are Turkic.

This sounds really beautiful. The turpan looks related to the Dombra (played in kazakhstan, uzbekistan etc). I really want to visit Xinjiang, but need to refresh my mandarin more first. Xinjiang seems very mysterious and representative of china's diversity.

As far as I know "We-gur" is how the Mandarin speakers mispronounce Uy-ghur. Every Turkic or Mongolian person refers to them as Uy-ghur.
@FarWestChina
@FarWestChina 6 лет назад
Mandarin speakers don't say "Wee-gur", they say "way-wu-are-you" - it's the Chinese transliteration. English speakers generally say "Wee-gur" because we don't really have the "Uy" sound in our language.

There is no mispronounciation when one group of people wants to create a word for an "exotic" word using their own language, to make sure this word can be easily accepted and spreaded among themselves meanwhile respecting the authentic pronounciation.

+jo ki Actually, jo ki, both Uzbek and Uyghur, as well as Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and a LOT of other languages, are all in the Turkic family of languages. Check out en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkic_languages.
