ACT is the one thing that has been able to help me with CPTSD and flashbacks. I became very dissociative and it doesn't help to say 'well I shouldn't feel this way / experience this.' ACT has saved me countless times from myself but I'm still learning to integrate it into my toolbox.

ACT was recently recommended for me and when looking it up for some information I see YOU! I was a client of yours years ago and not gonna lie I got a bit excited to see you offering ACT. You were incredible with me. So compassionate, empathetic and you truly want to help your clients. I felt very comfortable with you and although anxious for our sessions, I always looked forward to them. Thank you for being you. :)

I am responding to the comments/ reply of Ms. Kristie in the comment section of this video. Mental health is comparatively foremost than any physical injury. We can fight with physical injuries by good mental health but not vice versa. The poor mental health and psychological inflexibilities kill your living instinct, hinder your personal and professional health and mars your overall personality. I have been struggling to fight out a sort of personality disorder or say sense of idealism in my daily routine life which in the practical world is near impossible. Then how to live with the values if those are real and practically correct . Perhaps ACT may not deal with the worries about the present moment real problems. In any case the video in question by Mr Gordon is extremely helpful for people facing issues of psychological inflexibilities like me. Let's hope for the best . I am willing to share my views on this monster thing ,if the similarly placed persons want so with sincerity , understanding and requisite privacy.Good luck.

You wouldn’t believe this Matthew but I actually begin almost all of my workshops by saying: I guarantee you, you’re already doing a lot of what we’re going to be talking about in this workshop. ACT is really focused on a “what works” approach and that means therapists have adapted all kinds of helpful things that work. Feel free to use ACT to give a formal name and structure to what you’re doing and if you create something novel, share it with the ACT community. This work continues to evolve, all the time. I’d love to hear about what you’re doing!

1) Daniel J. Moran. He is brilliant, practical and to the point. 2) Joanne Steinwachs. You will take the deepest dive into the underpinnings of clinical work that you can imagine. 3) Emily Sandoz. Her books are phenomenal and her workshops are mind blowing. Emily’s work is creative, original and interesting. 4) Kirk Strosahl, Patricia Robinson. These two are some of the early developers and adopters of ACT. I think you’ll be surprised how immediately effective and practical their work is. 5) Jenn Villate and Matthieu Villate. These two provide RFT accounts and clinical work “Mastering the Clinical Conversation” but also each have a very deep understanding of the heart of ACT.

Nice video..The only thing is I don't think you put the individual in the driving seat to control your thoughts, emotions and feelings. I think you can be the observer to see them going by and you can try to respond in a different way, but you need to make changes in small steps first and that's gonna take time and energy, 'coz only the insight won't give you enough urge and passion to make concrete differences in behavior :)

Thank you for this helpful information. Is there a way to practice which behavior we are going to 'choose' next?
@TimothyGordon
@TimothyGordon 3 года назад
Great question! First, please work on this with a professional who can practice with you, get to know you, your situation and give direct, authoritative feedback. Second, this is not advice but an idea. Please don’t read my comment as an alternative to therapy. With my clients, I try to figure out a behaviour that is linked with something more valuable, something that is reinforcing but perhaps in the long-term, like a distal reinforcer. Maybe try looking that last term up. For example, if binge eating is the behaviour you want to change, you’re wise to have alternatives that are linked to something important, like reading a book that interests you, cuddling your dog, putting on music and dancing instead. The idea here is having an alternative behaviour that is reinforcing, it just may not be reinforcing immediately like the problematic behaviour, hence why these painful behaviours tend to stick.

This was helpful to me in many ways, thoughtful, articulate, to the point. As you explained ACT it became a pun. Is that intentional? It really is similar to the double counciousness all ACTors must juggle as they navigate and adjust a performance they create yet allow their audience enough influence to create an authentic moment on stage. (As a director and voice teacher I have a quibble. Did you say locus or “locust” of control?)
@TimothyGordon
@TimothyGordon 5 лет назад
Thanks for taking the time to comment Valerie!! Making a pun out of the word ACT is definitely intentional though I try not to be too corny about it. :) In the first ACT book, Hayes, Strosahl and Wilson refer to ACT being a relevant word to say out loud as a word ‘act’ rather than spelled out A-C-T because ACT is about act in action. Haha. I however was not aware of your acting reference as in actors on stage - I’d totally love to steal that and use it as a metaphor in a future video!! And your quibble is well observed. Sometimes I get excited and I just talk too fast. I’ve tried to curb because I know I can speak too fast for some people but what can I say, I’m passionate about this work. It does yield mistakes and it for sure sounds like I say locust rather than locus. A couple people have caught that here in the comments. My bad. :)

Yes! Although we could say ACT is a kind of CBT. Also, there is evidence to support that traditional CBT can be augmented effectively with acceptance and mindfulness processes.

So is this kinda similar to mindfulness because I have sensorimotor OCD and I've been using mindfulness and wonder if ACT would be good for that to

Yes! Very similar. ACT is very much about integrating the underlying processes evident in mindfulness practices within your everyday life. Sort of living explicitly through your values, working with your OCD rather than against. Seeking to be without it.

Can you tell me why
@chievejobs4687
@chievejobs4687 2 года назад
@@almere10 Working with ACT is what truly made me understand that I have no power over the panic. I just have to accept that it's there and not work myself up feeling hopeless about the whole situation. I still get panic attacks but my overall anxiety is way lower since I don't obsess over when the next attack is coming or how I will have to be to prevent it. I can't prevent it, I accept that it's there and an attack may come but I will save my response for when it actually does and accept it when it does instead of fighting it. It was not a quick fix, it required work but I'd say im about 90% recovered For reference I used to barely even be able to leave my apartment to do anything, shop for food, meet friends etc. Now I work full time and have normal functioning social life. I don't attribute everything to ACT (I also started working out, eating better etc) but it put me on the right path

This is the best intro to ACT I've found so far. I'm glad you mentioned its roots in Relational Frame Theory and Comprehensive Distancing. I find that knowing the history of the ideas gives ACT a context, and also a feeling of validity.

Great explanation. I would also not agree that ACTS has not been influenced by Buddhism, as acceptance is a psychospiritual perspective dynamic. Noticing thoughts, releasing them, affirming you are not your thoughts...while ACT does tie behavior into a network of relational complexity that only adds more dimension to mindfulness and resilience.

Thank you Jose, please note I did not say influenced by: I said that ACT is not based on. All too often I hear folks, including people educated in my field saying that ACT was based on or developed to be an empirically supported Buddhist therapy, etc. No, that is not whatsoever true.

How can I utilize this ACT Principle in a child who does not listen to me, refusing to eat, and just continued playing with her toys, at mealtime?

Hey John, great question!! I’m dealing with this myself, can we chat about this together in a video!!? If you’d be open to that. If not, I can try to produce one myself but I’ve been struggling to find the motivation to sit down by myself (with young kids at home) to produce videos. I’m sure you can relate.

I'm exploring new therapists in my area and found a clinic that offers ACT; in fact, it was the clinic that told me about ACT. I never heard about ACT beforehand, so they gave me more information by sending me an email with this video linked in it. I have to admit it was a little hard to follow (but that might be due to my easily distracting environment right now), but I am fascinated with this form of therapy! I'm gonna give it a shot.

It's a well constructed video for dealing with the complex and variety of mental health issues in a concise and summarized way. This summarized video clip of ACT will help in meaningful reading of the big volumes of the books on ACT by linking the preceding textual explanation with the subsequent / following textual explanation , Otherwise it will become very difficult for an ordinary person to comprehend the concept of ACT. Would like to have more such enlightening videos.Thanks

Relational networks, socially constructed, etc, all that sounds a lot like Buddhism's this-that conditionality, mental fabrications, and interdependent co-arising packaged in modern, psychology jargon. You didn't say a single thing that I didn't already know from Buddhist mindfulness practice. Good job presenting it to non-Buddhists in a non-Buddhist language though. Keep it up.
