Back in the day, at music school, everyone I knew was constantly walking around with a Walkman (it was the '80s) just listening, listening, listening. And then, we'd help each other discover recordings (a friend mentioned Miles at the Plugged Nickel and just made a face like, "damn". I immediately knew I had to check it out)
This is real issue man, i have 5 Gb of music, but the real deal is listening one album, to feel the music, and transcribe. This process takes longer, but feels great.
Hi mate! Your tips and info are very useful for me. Thank you very much for your time and your attention and your effort! You are a great soul. I'm just a guitar beginner looking for information!
Great video as always. Just the album "In Japan" is a great suggestion. But the point of active listening is what this lesson is about... when I was brought up we would listen to whole albums on a regular basis. We never listened to a single cut. Things have certainly changed now that a lot of music is downloaded 1 tune at a time in mp3 format. On the subject of listening there's some great advice given by Bill Dobbins in any of "The Jazz Workshop Series" of playalongs published by Advance Music. In my copy of Classic Standards it's the first thing written in the book under How to Use This Material- where the 1st step is listening to a piece 5 times, focusing on specific parts of the music. Then at least 3 more times to pick up on other aspects. NOT to listen 5 to 8 times in a sitting...but at least 1 objective at a time. Really worthwhile advice if anyone has one of these superior playalongs.
Hey Bob, Love your work and love your RU-vid channel. I recently started playing the sax but I'm struggling with transcribing. I wanted to know how you approached it when you first started? I feel like the things I'm trying to transcribe are bigger than my ears can handle. I appreciate any help you can give me.
It's funny, after listening to your tune 'Crush' over and over, I am now starting to hear your signature licks in other live clips from you. I do think people who were born before digital content was available have an advantage in that we grew up listening intently to albums (without shuffle!), as they were a precious and rare resource.
Man, just thank you so much. This is the information that I think not so many people care to talk about, it's hard to find something about "how to listen". I have a problem, I always want to get everything I can, like in a solo, I want to understand each note and incorporate the best I can, but this became obssessive, and my mind goes unconcentrated really fast, maybe because of the pressure I put myself to listen the best I can. It's been a while I can't listen to something without my mind flyes away and without being angry about don't being "present" while I'm listening. What to do? haha
Even with Spotify and RU-vid, you still have to dig to find good version, there are a lot of standards I listen to that are just live combos and big bands
Hey Bob!. Before i started to play saxophone i used to sit down every day 2 or 3 hours a day just to listen some music, actively!, absolutely concentrated. I used to listen (and watch videos) to Chick Corea, Brecker, Dave Weckl, Oz Noy, Maceo Parker (and so many others) -...records and live recitals over and over again!. BUT since i started playing saxophone i feel like i have no time to listen to music!, im allways studyng, playing, thinking, i liten to music to transcribe something , or while im doing some other thing (and i dont really concentrate on what im listening), but i JUST CANT FIND THE TIME to sit down and JUST LISTEN!, like i used to... you think i should practice a little less to listen some more?.
