Dude, how do I look in my new clothes?
Wow, ok Romeo. You’re looking fresh, man.
Dude, my name is not Romeo.
Dude, I know.
Dude, then why are you calling me Romeo?
It’s an allusion, man. I am making an allusion.
A what?
An allusion--Romeo is a reference to Shakespeare. You know Romeo and Juliet, right?
Yeah.
Well Romeo was known as a romantic dude. All I am saying is that you look good, man. You look ready for a date or something.
Ah, ok. I get it. I’m no Einstein when it comes to this stuff--you know.
Dude, you just used an allusion!
I did.
Yes!. You said you are no Einstein. Einstein is known as a super smart dude. You just referenced a famous scientist as an indirect way of saying you are not smart.
Well, it’s true. Literary devices like allusions are my achilles heel.
Dude, you are totally messing with me now.
What do you mean?
You just used another allusion!
I did?
Yes, achilles heel is a reference to Greek mythology. In the Iliad, Homer talks about the adventures of the great warrior achilles.
Dude, how do you know all this stuff.
Dude, just let me finish. You see, despite Achilles’ strength, he had one weakness--his achilles heel. So you are indirectly saying that your weakness is understanding literary devices.
Dude, tell me more about these Allusions--Einstein.
Fine, I will--Romeo.
First, let’s go over the definition of an allusion:
An allusion is a reference to someone or something commonly known from literature, history or culture.
So let’s look at this excerpt from to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Can you spot the allusion?
"Are we poor, Atticus?"
Atticus nodded. "We are indeed."
Jem's nose wrinkled. "Are we as poor as the Cunninghams?"
"Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them hardest."
The allusion from this piece is the word “crash.” This is a cultural reference to the stock market crash of 1929 that led to the Great Depression. Without recognizing this allusion, the reader could think the author is referencing a car crash--or perhaps another kind of crash. The use of crash in this instance demonstrates that the Cunninghams, though poor, are a different kind of poor since they once had some money before the stock market crash.
Here is another example of an allusion by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In his speech “the other america.” Can you spot the allusion?
“So what we are seeking to do in the Civil Rights Movement is to deal with this problem. To deal
with this problem of the two Americas. We are seeking to make America one nation, Indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.”
The allusion here is “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” This is a direct quote from the pledge of allegiance. Notice how King doesn’t directly reference the pledge of allegiance. Similar to an inside joke, King allows the reader or listener to discover the reference, and make the connection for themselves. In this case, the point is that there is a portion of Americans not experiencing what the pledge of allegiance upholds.
Now it is your turn to find allusions and explain their significance. Here are three examples of allusions used in poetry and speeches.
"Nothing Gold Can Stay" (1923) by Robert Frost
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
George W. Bush
2000 Inaugural Address
"Many in our country do not know the pain of poverty, but we can listen to those who do. And I can pledge our nation to a goal: When we see that wounded traveler on the road to Jericho, we will not pass to the other side."
John F. Kennedy
Final United Nations Address
"And finally, a worldwide program of farm productivity and food distribution, similar to our country's "Food for Peace" program could, now, give every child the food he needs. But man does not live by bread alone, and the members of this organization are committed by the Charter to promote and respect human rights."
