Laowa is adding two new members to their world's smallest Anamorphic lens line up: 65mm T/2.4 & 80mm T/2.4. These are 1.5x constant squeeze anamorphic lenses with Super35+ coverage but you actually could use them on full frame just with a small crop. ‪@LaowaByVenusOptics‬ is running an Indiegogo campaign right now with discounts on their nanomorph lenses:

If you want to get these Nanomorph lenses at discount price, check out their Indiegogo campaign before it is finished: www.indiegogo.com/projects/laowa-tiniest-anamorphic-lens-return-65mm-80mm#/ Does anyone like to shoot anamorphic photos?

Excellent explanation of anamorphic lenses. These Nanomorph lenses do look quite small and very attractive

Awesome video sir! If you can only pick one, which one would you pick? 65 or 80mm? I'm shooting on the BMPCC 6K pro and I already have the 35mm Nanomorph. Thanks in advanced!

I usually recommend prime lens shooter to go for approximately 2x focal length when choosing their lenses.. e.g. 24mm -> 50mm -> 105mm So in your case, 35 x 2 = 70mm so either would be fine.. i might choose the 80mm because you could get more shallow depth of field that the 35mm is hard to achieve unless you are shooting something very closeup.

@@TheRealRichardWongInteresting, I have never thought of it that way. I was leaning towards the 80mm for more of that compressed bokeh look and thinking of picking up the 1.33x adapter also. So, after your testing, which one did you like more, the 65 or the 80mm? Thanks!

@@HighDesertEntertainmentHDE Apart from the 80mm has more noticeable distortion, I feel the performance of both lenses are very similar. if i have to pick between these two, i would just pick the one with focal length more suitable to my requirements. If you want more bokeh, then go for the 80mm!

How do the focal lengths differ from standard lenses? Does the squeeze factor play a role in that? For example, if I like the 50mm focal length would I buy a 50, or do I need to calculate in the 1.5 and get a 75mm or a 35mm to achieve the 50mm look?

hi Tony, the vertical field of view would be exactly the same as the focal length value suggest. But the horizontal field of view would be equivalent to the focal length divide by the squeeze factor. e.g. if you want 50mm focal length of normal lens.. then for a 1.5 squeeze lens, you should get 75mm lens as 50mm x 1.5 = 75mm

Is anamorphic stabilization bad when walking handheld? Better to film open gate or 4k for stabilization? I don’t like using gimbals.

It seems to work ok with camera like Lumix S5II and G9II as they have anarmorphic IBIS mode. But not so much with cameras that only has normal IBIS mode.

Unless one wants the oval bokeh, there is no need for these lenses for wide aspect ratios on cameras that shoot open gate with resolutions of 24mp and up. You can easily get 2.67:1 aspect ratio and have pixels to spare with spherical lenses.

While i can argue the improve in low light performance is till valid, i think for most people, using anamorphic lenses these days would be mainly for artistic reasons, the oval bokeh, the anamorphic lens flare / streak, and the overall rendering that is usually a bit different to the normal photo lenses

@@TheRealRichardWong I agree with you that the esthetics of the oval bokeh is unique and cinematic, but from what I've seen from these lenses, I don't think that the 1.5x squeeze is enough. Probably 2x is where one needs to be. I believe these lenses are actually nicer for photography, recreating the X-Pan experience without the wide sensor.
