So, what is an Episcopalian? An Episcopalian is a person who belongs to the Episcopal Church. And what IS the Episcopal Church? The Episcopal Church is a Christian church that is part of the wider Anglican Communion, the third largest communion of Christians in the world. In other countries, Episcopalians are normally called "Anglicans." We trace our origins back to the Church of England. The Episcopal Church was formally established in the United States after the American Revolution, distinguishing itself from its British roots while maintaining a shared liturgical tradition. Central to Episcopal worship is the Book of Common Prayer, which outlines the church's services and expresses its theology, emphasizing a balance between scripture, tradition, and reason. We have elements that are both Catholic AND Reformed. Episcopalians practice two primary sacraments-Baptism and the Eucharist-as essential to spiritual life and communal worship. These sacraments are seen as means of grace, spiritual nourishment, and affirmation of God’s presence in daily life. The Bible plays a central role in our services, our discussions, and in our community life. The Episcopal Church is characterized by openness and dialogue. We engage actively in social justice issues, advocating for the marginalized and working towards societal equality. The church supports the full inclusion of all people in its sacramental life, reflecting its commitment to diversity and unity. In recent years, the Episcopal Church has seen a large influx of converts from other Christian traditions who seek a connection with a church that has preserved an unbroken line of bishops going back to the apostles, and which practices sacramental and liturgical worship. Many of our clergy and leaders are converts to the faith, who have found in the Episcopal church a balance of history, tradition, and openness. As Episcopalians, we encourage Intellectual freedom and inquiry, allowing members to explore their faith in the context of contemporary life and personal experience. This openness invites a diverse membership, across the entire political and ideological spectrum, united in worship and mission. The Episcopal Church aims to be a compassionate community that mirrors the love of Christ in the world, striving to serve others and promote peace and justice globally. We seek to build the Kingdom of God, and to make God's love, as shown in Jesus Christ, present in a hurting world. As Christians, we follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, whom we believe to be God incarnate, sent to redeem humankind and teach us how to love and take care of each other and to act as stewards of creation. We welcome you to visit us anytime, and to experience what the Bible means when it says, "God is Love." No matter who you are, and what you've been through, no matter how challenging, we invite you to come and be with us to heal, to grow, and to know God's love for you.
