What is an Inductor doing in a loudspeakers?

The Inductor is used to direct low frequencies and resist high frequencies.
It consists of a lacquered wire wound to a coil which causes a magnetic field to occur in the center. The field in the middle can be increased in strength by having a steel or a ferrous core. This is due to the fact that magnetism will be easier to propagate, but the drawback is that it is difficult to disappear too, so that a magnetic resisstance will arise when the poles are to be reversed and resistance will arise called hysteresis.
This storage of magnetism means that the larger the coil, the lower the frequencies are needed to magnetize and lead. Therefore, the larger a coil that gets connected in series, the lower the frequency at which it is connected.
You can consider the speaker coil as being in series, therefore its resistance (impedance) will have a big effect on the current running and hence the magnetic charge of the coil. Therefore, you can adjust half the size of a coil to achieve the same crossover frequency, if you connect 2 of the same speaker drivers in parallel on the same inductor.
The single-coil series method is the type of filter called first order filter or 6dB per octave filter. To give a sharper split, you can subsequently take a capacitor and calculate at the same crossover frequency and connect it after the coil to ground / minus and short circuit the high tones. This provides the most popular 2nd order filter or also called 12dB per octave filter.
With numerous years of serving high-end audio clients under my belt, I am excited to offer a speaker repair and upgrade service that's sure to meet your needs. Learned a lot... after watching this video I don't understand why Pioneer opted to put an Inductor directly inline with a horn loaded ribbon tweeter. Maybe ribbon tweets are that much different than dome tweets. I know the driver motor is massive.. heavier even than the 5 ¼ sqwauker.
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk Год назад
Must be a Horn for midrange then, because an inductor will for certain remove some high frequency, dampening of output is with resistors. Even the voice coil itself is removing high frequencies and the less induction the better + the Horn itself raises the lower end of the tweeter spectrum and does nothing typically above 10KHz because the wavelength is so short that the Horn wont change pressure to speed

Hey Ken, first of all thanks for sharing the knowledge. Second, I have a couple of questions. I'm upgrading a Yamaha speaker set's crossover (3way and 2way, 4speakers total) I already upgraded the capacitors with polypropylene ones, and I wanted to take it further up a notch and add frequency filters to all the speakers to assign their designated frequencies to each driver. The problem is I've looked all over the internet and haven't found a tutorial good enough to inspire confidence aside from this video. However, I'm still confused enough, so my question is how would I go about installing these "filters" on, say, a woofer, a mid, and a tweeter? And where could I install these inductors in the existing crossover since I'm working on a forgiving budget here.

Use basic reactance equations Inductance = 2pifL. Capacitance =1/2pifC. For inductance the reactive impedance increases with frequency increase. With Capacitance the reactive impedance decreases with frequency increase. Could use a number of spot frequencies for the f part of the equation matching to the response of each speaker driver component. Probably want some crossover frequency overlap on the response curve of each speaker driver used so there is not so much in the perceived loudness overall at the crossover frequency.

@MrLihogames

I was wondering if you can just add a inductor and capacitor to the wire, but both connected to an different amp channel? Because I wat to build a speaker and I need at least 45W for both the tweeter and woofer. Am I able to instead of connecting just one 50W channel to a crossover, and then to the speakers. I thought if I connect the tweeter to a 50W channel, and just put an capacitor in between the amp and the tweeter. And connect the woofer to the other 50W channel, and just put an inductor between the amplifier and woofer. Does this also work?

You absolutely can, just knowing that weirdness can occur in the music if the board is stereo and you are playing a stereo signal. But technically it would certainly work

Question... what happens when the impedance of the speaker is rising with frequency? For example, I picked a 3.5mH inductor to go with my "4 ohm" woofer for an approximate 200hz 6db/oct LPF. However, I have come to find out that woofer's impedance is 6 ohm at 200hz, 8 ohm at 400hz, and 11 ohm at 800hz. I am wondering what dB reduction I can expect at these frequencies.
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 3 месяца назад
Very good question, and yes depending on how much induction there is in the motor system the impedance will start to rise. If the crossover frequency is in the area of the this rise, you should consider a zobel filter aka impedance correction filter. It consist of a resistor in series with a capacitor and this series filter is parallel to the woofer. Here is how to calculate diyaudioprojects.com/Technical/Speaker-Zobel/

Hello. In order to increase high ends, do I have to change the inductor to a smaller one or simply remove it ? Thanks.
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 3 года назад
Unfortunately not that simpel, the ability to how high a tweeter can go in frequency is the tweeter itself, and you can accidentally kill some of that performance with using dampening with sandcast resistors or crossing with bad quality capacitors like the electrolytic type. The size capacitor and inductor is what determines the crossover frequency, so more a question og how low the tweeter will play.

@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 2 года назад
Hi Mark, it matters what the inductor can take as far as how much effect (watt) you are planning to apply to the circuit. Here you would have to choose the inductors wire thickness in order to accommodate that power.

can i use instead of inductor a 4 ohm speaker?
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 6 лет назад
The induction (mH) is for the most part too little for a useful crossover frequency. In reality the speaker itself has its own filter in that way, but because the induction is not that big you will for the most part have cone breakup before that filtering kicks in, thats not harmful to the speaker, it just doesnt sound good. You could also take a small stel rod and wind isolated wire around it , but then you would need a gauge that can measure inductance to see what value you have.

Take the speaker element out and try with one speaker element, the inductor only raises capacitance and that can affect capacitors..etc crossover ? I only like single good quality elements these boxes are dissorted. Single inductor should be like longer cable with single speaker element.

@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 3 года назад
It actually doesnt matter, lets say a capacitor in series, it will have the same effect on minus as well as plus, but to keep it organized I will recommend placing all components in series on the plus wire from the amplifier, just like it shows in a standard crossover diagram, then someone else can easier figure out what is going on. The reason I specify plus from the amplifier is that you can have a polarity shift on example the tweeter, so that the tweeter ends up connected with opposite polarity, but are you just doing 1 capacitor (first order) don't worry about polarity shift.

awesome video, hey can you put two inductors together?
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 6 лет назад
Yes if you connect the 2 inductors in series, and then you can add the 2 values together. Make sure to spread then a bit a part, because the fringe field (magnetic) at each end will affect the value of each other, and that effect will be depended if that field is out or in phase. So instead of getting all that straight, just keep a healthy 2" distance or more.

@yvesboutin5604
@yvesboutin5604 3 месяца назад
Every drivers should have their own device to give them the frequencies they can reproduce without distortion. In the case of a three-way design ( woofer-midrange-tweeter ), you will need an inductor between 1,2 mH and 2,4 mH for an 8 Ohm woofer. You will also need a 12 to 24 uF ( microfarad ) capacitor for the midrange ( assuming you want to cross at 1 kHertz ) and a 0,5 mH in series with the capacitor to keep the frequencies between 1 kH and 5 kH to be fed to the midrange only. Finally, a 3,3 uF cap will be necessary to protect the tweeter from receiving freqnencies lower than 4 kH. Also, since midrange and tweeter are more efficients than a woofer, some resistors might be useful to balance the sound from the 3 drivers. As you can see, it is quite complicated if you want a good sound from a multi-drivers speaker. I hope it answer you question thoroughly.
