I used to work for a company that made custom intercoolers for racing applications. From an engineering perspective, it was pretty interesting work. I worked on development of the systems they made for the Mazda miatas. It seems like a simple device. But getting it right is extremely complicated. It's a delicate balance between maximizing heat transfer while maintaining boost. You're going to lose boost pressure with any intercooler. So the net gain of the heat transfer (cooling of the air) has to surpass the loss of boost pressure. This is why pairing the right cooler with your turbo is so important. 💨
Great video. Very informative for the ignorant such as myself. Considering I’m spending a fair amount for upgrades on my B8, I have a better understanding.
The air doesn't travel in straight path from left side of intercooler to the right side of the intercooler like you were showing. The air travel through thin copper or aluminium pipe from left to right in zigzag way. The larger the intercooler the longer is the pipe inside the intercooler. The air gets cooler the More distance it travel down the pipe.
You have both the intake and exhaust system coming together at the turbo. The gasses are separate, however both of them travel through. Once I go Big turbo, i'll explain in detail how they work :)
I did a while back lol I just never put it on camera ahah Its pretty similar to automotive stuff. I had to replace a few of the ball joints, the drum brakes all around and then had to bleed them.
The air doesn't go through the holey parts. It goes through the piping between the holey parts. Well, it does but not the air we'd need for the turbo. Makes any sense?
i know u made this video 3 years ago but i have one question. i thought that the coolant went through the intercooler and not air? does the air AND coolant together going through the intercooler?? i hope u answer but i think its too late
Hey why should we use intercooler why don't we connect the turbo charger directly to the inlet manifold because if the air is hot then no need to compress more to burn isn't it ?
Your ECU will limit the amount of fuel injected into the cylinders to prevent premature ignition(backfiring), but if you cool off the intake, the ECU will let the fuel flow full blast.
Adam R yo! Lol That's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this video. Infact as soon as I looked at the title my mind read it in Arnie's voice.
so the intercooler doesnt suck any air, air just passes thru from what the intake is sucking to the turbo and the cylinders right? the reason i ask i live in a place where when it rains it floods somewhat nd i dont want to damage my engine if water gets up to the intercooler.. thanks in advance..
milanmastracci Well I hope nothing goes wrong with yours, but I kinda do for that video haha. It's because I noticed a rattle coming from my car and I can now see my compressor shaking while my A/C is on or off
I have a stock car with only a catback exhaust, I have a fmic I want to install, with a bov. Will it require a tune after I install it? I’ve heard a tune isn’t necessary, I will just have a little more lag. Is someone able to confirm or deny this for me?
milanmastracci So what should I install first, Turbo or the intercooler? Thanks man for replying! Nice vids! Hope you push through with the intercooler installation vid.
Mike Honda Boy I had the same question as well and found the answer here. Im assuming you've found your answer by now but Id say they should be installed about the same time. Bc you dont want the turbo on the car without a way to cool the air down, but an intercooler by itself doesnt really do anything. The intercooler needs to connect to the turbo, so Id say buy them in any order you like but install them at the same time
hello milan :) awesome videos! i have a question, i own a bmw 2 liter turbo diesel, and a few months ago i hit a rabbit on highway (RIP rabbit) and it broke my bumper and bend my intercooler a little, there is no leak. but i want to buy another one from used parts, should i buy the bigger one for 2.5 liter, or even 3 liter version of my same car, they should probably fit perfect. thanks !
@@bogdananghel9480 put it, bigger intercooler beter cooling...when you do performance setup in official bmw they upgrade from 330d on your 320d...m performance kit
Because they are a very good platform for other modifications, there is a large aftermarket market for car parts, and they're fairly light, with a decent amount of power. Remove more weight and add more power, and you have a recipe for a good time :)
I like mini's, personnaly I have put a lot of money in fy fiat punto, its the fun of building and having the finished product :) Not neccesarily have loads of hp or be expensive, no offence to your project tho. Every one has their opinions I gues
