Hi! great video. Thank you so much. To confirm, LPCC's cannot assess and diagnose clients? Another question I have is whether or not LPCC's able to open their own private practice? I am trying to figure out whether I want to go the LPCC route so this definitely helps

I will answer specifically in CA and generally in the rest of the country. In terms of diagnosis, yes, we can diagnose in California. There are some diagnoses, including neurological, Neuropsychological, or intelligence-related, that really should have in-depth psychological testing administered before they are given. In the video, I reference that APCCs/LPCCs currently have limitations on giving these tests to clients in California. In general, not a lot of therapists provide this assessment, no matter the license type, and refer out to someone who provides in-depth testing. Throughout the United States, I am not aware of any state that doesn't allow the LPC/LPCC/etc to diagnose or have any big limitations on diagnosing. In terms of working in private practice, yes, LPCCs can open their own private practice, and many do! Including myself! I have a group practice: www.AngelCityTherapy.com

I work in a mental health clinic in California and our clinic has (until just a couple years ago) ALL LCSWs! I find that rather odd. Our new program manager is an LMFT and she told me she plans on hiring more diversity in the field. I asked her whether she would consider LPCCs and it appeared she hadn't thought about that. Well, I will be bringing it up more often to her and provide information from CALPCC. I find it as a little unfair that LCSWs dominate this field. Why? LCSWs are the only ones qualified to do psychotherapy? I think not.

Yes, people often hire what they know. Unfortunately since we are lesser known in California it means LPCCs need to educate individuals on who we are than in other states. That's why I created these videos!

I’m working to become an LCSW. BUT! To answer your question - the social work degree is highly versatile. You can basically take your MSW and do just about anything. In comparison to the counseling degrees, you’re confined to that specific area of interest. While social workers are not the only ones “qualified” to provide therapy - we are the most versatile and popular degree choice. Over 60% of mental health services in the US are provided by social workers. Don’t hate! Participate - go get your MSW and join the tribe!

It’s not about being fair. That’s a childish way to think. It’s the simple fact that more people obtain social work education bc of all of the great benefits and they opt to become LCSWs.

@@blahblah941 MFTs and LPCs are more qualified in many respects to provide psychotherapy. I have worked in a mental health clinic for 15 years and it's time to bring in more MFT/LPC to fill these roles. Doing so will diversify and enrich our communities. LCSW may be a "popular" choice among students, but popularity is not necessarily the best choice. Fairness in opportunity and diversity in the mental health profession is not a childish way to think, it's necessary.
