What is Anchoring and how to win fights with it (HotS).

Anchoring is a term used by pros, shoutcasters and regular players alike that means for a strong member to hold a zone for their team by sitting in a bush in between their team and the enemies team. This can lead to free kills and favorable fights if your tank is anchoring. Any tank or hero with high cc can anchor, some are more effective.
A garrosh or diablo anchor can lead to easy kills an ETC Anchor can win easy fights, but Johanna and Tyrael anchors may be a bit weaker it is still favorable to do it before fights.

My heart dropped when I read the name of the Nazeebo, I am that Ragnite. What a joy to be called out in public! So I agree that I did not respect the bush. That Diablo attack was a complete surprise. I think in my mind I was looking to take the camp while the objective was warming up. The intention was to place pressure on the bot lane while we fight over the tower. So my descent into destruction was sealed when I focused on my plan instead of observing my enemy's actions.

OH NO, I am so sorry. Yeah a simple spider would have sufficed. But hey, sometimes you need to make a mistake to learn from it. Either way, thanks so much for being a good sport about it. I think your logic was good, but yeah the higher the rank the more the tanks will be sneaky before objectives.

No problem. In real life, I train in martial arts. We take coaching all the time. Corrections are so much more valuable than praise. I can't wait to get into a game this evening and practice respecting the bush and letting go of my plans. Besides, I do not expect my HOTS games to be private.

Hey guys, few things to know. Checking bushes is all about information. In nazeebos case you could have thrown something in the bush to reveal it or wait for a tank to face check. As if ETC went in first he could have knocked back and slid out. When Diablo went for the bush he could reveal with w, but w also would show his position so instead he used the information he had of the people being in the lane to know he was safe to go into an aggressive bush. Use logic when anchoring, but it is a powerful tool. Someone like Garrosh is even scarier as an anchor and on maps like Blackheart Bay anchoring the turn in point can be very effective. Thank you all for watching!

@Krixis02 "not only d.va was away from your team, hanzo wasn't there from enemies as well." True, but I figured he meant from his point of view during the game, he thought they were outnumbered but decided to engage anyways. And thanks to anchoring they got a couple quick kills. While watching the replay he knew they were 4v4, but that's just hindsight.

1:10 “Hanzo AI is no longer following Stukov.” seems like what went wrong was that they had a dc member from the start of the fight. If they had hanzo, they would’ve had vision over obj.

I knew about anchoring from watching Ishb00's videos on How to Tank but I really like how you went the extra step of pointing out that you waited until Nazeebo was almost next to you before you Shadow Charged and why. That was new information and was super helpful! And now I also know a Napoleon quote 😜

Great video! Anchoring also applies to using your body to create an advantage with certain map elements - for example, standing away from your keep so it doesn't absorb minion damage, AOE, accidental skillshots, etc. Or for Infernal Shrines, positioning on the friendly side of the skeleton pit so they walk toward you, making it so you can kill skeletons without being too far out of position.

Would it be better for exampel a bruiser to be anchoring? If you do it as a tank you pretty much let the team right into your squishy backline where they easily can ignore the tank and kill from the inside or am i wrong? (sorry for bad spelling)

Great video man, subbed. I play all classes but usually prefer tank or support and encourage this kind of plays, only problem is my team usually doesn't look at the map or what their team mates are doing... ergo they don't think like a team but like individuals. And it ends like a wasted opportunity, or i get myself killed cause i forgot to ping, thinking they see wtf em i trying to do, but no, most of the time they just walk past me and tunnel vision half of the minion wave that is across the map...sigh. This vid is example why every player should get familiar with each class/hero play style. Also to ppl saying diablo didn't respect the bush in the first place, are terribly wrong, 1st he can clearly see where all of the enemy team is 2nd hes a freaking diablo, you cant f him up that easly.

As people are pointing out there are many different ways to anchor as anchoring is a very broad concept. In the gaming community it can be commonly referred to as "passivism for the greater good". While the concept has been used in all forms of gaming the term itself has died down a lot as it has been broken down and subdivided into various categories. Camping, Area Denial, Area Fortification to name a few are subcategories of anchoring. These can be found in more specific scenarios on HotS; such as a Hammer siegeing up and becoming a focal point. Cain dropping out endless potions to fortify a forward position in which his team can better hold a line. The first time I encountered the term was back in 97 for a game called SubSpace. One of the earliest MMOs out there; a 2D spaceship shooter, 2 or more teams of ~10 would fight over a flag(s) in a base. Teams would have 1 or 2 designated Anchors while everyone else served as Rushers to push up and eradicate the enemy team so your team could capture the flag(s). Rushers who died could respawn and warp back in onto their Anchor.

I think sometimes you just need to face check, even while knowing it might be a bit risky. An appropriate example would be, when you need your tank to be going first, but he just doesn't do it. The tank player doesn't know his job, is refusing to do it or whatever. This stuff is very common below master mmr. Anyway, now you have the option of checking (each potential) bush on your way with skillshots that you might not afford, or just yoloing it and hoping for the good outcome. Since the tank didn't do their job, this is the choice. Sometimes it's just not worth to even consider throwing around all your spells, just because the tank can't actually play tank. Also you could be the tank player, leading your team. You see the bush and determine there MIGHT be an ambush. But maybe you don't want to dismount to use a spell, or your cd's are too important to have down in a fight anyway. So you rely on your team to follow up with something like cleanse + gust, or just their own offensive. If your team suddenly decides it's time to go afk, the moment you get engaged on, it's probably you dead. And they will call you out for face checking. Even though it was their job to be right behind you with everything ready.

1:36 Diablo face-checks the bush... :-P I like and agree with the video, but we have to also remember that as we deciding where to go (as a tank, in this case), we use all the information available to us in the game. For instance, Diablo knows Falstad was killed and the previous skirmish left ETC with low HP; Hanzo is at top dancing with D.Va, and Diablo is almost full. Therefore there is not much risk for Diablo to go anchoring there, even if he meets someone already anchoring there. Not that it really matters for the point being made, but it would appear that the Hanzo player had left the game.

U could also say that different tanks have different anchoring potentials. For example as muradin u can do anchoring much deeper and safer than on diablo or garrosh (cuz of escape)
@NotParadox
@NotParadox 6 лет назад
Definitely. This is important. Mura and Anub have escapes if they anchor deep, but Diablo and Garrosh have more kill potential if they anchor closer to their team. Great advice, adapt to the tank.

Anchoring = Punishing Who Face Check The Bush Am i right ?
@RealGamingKnowledge
@RealGamingKnowledge 6 лет назад
No. Anchoring = standing in a bush giving your team vision, usually as main tank
@chartabona
@chartabona 6 лет назад
Anchoring is when a tank/bruiser positions himself (usually in a bush) where he is the hero closest to where the enemy team is most likely to come from. While it does punish face checking, it's most important aspect is granting vision and preventing your team from getting flanked. If you don't have someone anchoring a key bush and the enemy team is MIA, you have no idea if/when they're coming through that area.
@bnjrvr8770
@bnjrvr8770 6 лет назад
anchoring refers to the action of not actually participating in anything but be in range of either engage, punish, or peeling. This is the thing you should be doing the most on tanks that lack waveclear and overall utility. It can allow you to guard rotations, protect against merc invade, or set up a merc invade. I am a tank main at masters level, and I play particularly passively (ofc unless a hard engage is offered to me), what I mean by that is for most of the game, I'll just position in bushes acting as a mobile ward. My job as a tank is for the ennemy team to see me only when it's too late (ofc teamfights are different) and to give as much information as possible so everyone can react accordingly. I only show on the minimap when We actively need to depush, or we are pushing and even then I would usually try and block the flank route if there is anyone that could flank in the ennemy team. Anchoring is particularly effective against facecheck, but not only. in skirmishes and rotation it gives you a huge advantage because the ennemy has to respect the bush otherwise you can get anyone out of position and force more damage on them than on you, you might even be capable of scaring them away from actively clearing the wave in rotation or force their tank to play very passively in the skirmish and allow your team to poke more aggressively. Anchoring is not even directly related to bushes, I would even go as far as saying that anchoring is most often times more useful when used from outside of bushes(because it is even less predictible). There is a lot of places that are outside of ennemy vision and that are not bushes. Bushes are just the easiest to play with because it is their property to block vision. also, when you are in a bush, you have vision outside of the bush, when you anchor from outside of a bush, you don't have direct vision on the ennemy and rely on your team or minions to give you the information. But for example, a very simple engage from an outside of bush anchor position with diablo is : after 16 from behind any wall and if a squishy gets close to the other side of said wall you can q him , flip him and send him back into the wall, for a massive stun that can be easily followed up by a bodyblock. tldr: anchoring is very similar to bodyblocking in that it's something every tank player needs to master and is not directly achieved by using your heroe's abilities It is just something you can do for free and that's exactly why you should do it EVERY chance you get.

What depth of bronze is this elo, Stukov doesn’t try to heal or ult the enemy team off of naz he just sits there and cast E. Falstad sits in one spot and dies after the mosh goes off when he has zero chance of killing anyone Then ETC slides BACK INTO THE ENEMY after his entire team has died.

notparadox is masters level. (But either this is quickmatch or the draft was really weird.) I read a lot of comment like yours from gold/plat player whenever they see masters mistake. They estimate the level of play from a mistake alone.
@Siegetrain
@Siegetrain 6 лет назад
I noted several mistakes the enemy team made not one and there are several more.... the falstad doesn’t weave movements between his autos at all (he also goes hinterlands vs 2 heavy dive heroes and dva bomb when gust is the obvious choice. Naz had a chance to live since butcher was late on his ult, he alt W on himself instead of turning and placing it well past butcher, he can either walk straight out which would be close but at the very least he keeps butcher away. Etc could also have chose to mosh after he slides and catch butcher and diablo who are the only mosh interrupts. Stu seeing all of the above not happened should have ulted butcher away to save naz. All of the above is moot if naz throws q at the bush diablo is in. I don’t play this game anymore much but played at a GM level, I made the comment because there is a lot better instances to showcase proper tank play than this many mistakes by the enemy team here

Tbh your Diablo should have died when you face checked that bush with your team in Africa. You have no vision on their team and they should have been 4 man on the camp. The reason why Nazeebo didnt skillshot the bush was because his team was right next to him and had they walked that way around aswell and followed up it would have been a free objective for them. Also you arent turning an unfair fight into a win. your dva might not be there, but neither is their Hanzo. Dont get me wrong, I rly appreciate that you are educating the playerbase, cuz holy moly, they need it. Just dont get too full of yourself.

You're really going to pretend Diablo didn't have vision of the enemy team clearing bot lane up until he was about 2 feet from the bush? And yeah, even with Naz's team right there he still died because he walked up without checking the bush from range. It doesn't matter what Naz's reason is, the reason was wrong, they screwed up and died for it.
