my recruiter said this about basic training: "it is the best 'worst' time of your life. its difficult but extremely possible. no matter what dont give up. keep your head down, but volunteer for all extra activities you can." and honestly thats the best way to describe it. I would go through it again for several reasons.
The physical part is easy as long as you are in decent shape. You don’t have to be peak human to pass basic training. The hardest part is the mental part. Homesickness and shock culture combined with lack of sleep and never being able to relax makes it very stressful for the body

Pro tip- my dad is vet, 26 years in, most of his career as an officer in the 75th. He told me once, “As long as you accept that your experience of your dream may not turn out exactly as you expect, you’ll still feel satisfied looking back at the strength you found in yourself during the journey to doing your dreams.” I thought I was just going to do my few, get my degree and get out, big I fell in love with the Army, and took every learning/extra opportunity to improve that came my way. I went into SFAS, made it to the Q Course, didn’t finish due to injury, finished Airborne & Air Assault, earned my Sapper & Ranger tabs as well. Sometimes you have to widen your gaze to see the light when it gets dark, but it’s there. It’s going to suck getting there, but getting there is worth it. Cpt. Miller, 12A, 1-506 AIR, 101st AID. Sappers clear the way, Rendezvous with destiny.
This really spoke to me brother! Were you stationed at Ft. Campbell? Additionally, would you recommend going to OCS if you already have a bachelors degree (I went to Austin Peay by the way)? I am 27 years old, and worked two corporate jobs but I feel like my life is missing a puzzle piece of camaraderie and brotherhood. OCS is definitely an option I am looking into.
@@Case_Slay Hey friend, I’d walk your butt right into a recruiting office. They’ll have way more information than I will, and you don’t have to decide THAT day. It’s just information gathering, and getting your foot in the door. I can tell you, though, getting OCS in your first orders packet-going sometime soon after Basic if you aren’t going to SOPC, Airborne or RASP, requires a high ASVAB I believe. In no way am I saying I doubt you’re smart, I’m just saying, they can tell you what you’ll need, and there’s ASVAB studying tools everywhere for you. Do you have any idea what you would want to do? A specific MOS already in mind, or something you’re doing now and would like to do as well in the military?
Just left Jackson about a week ago. I’m in ait now. It’s mentally draining and tough but as long as you keep a good positive mindset and give a good strong effort and LISTEN TO YOUR DRILLS AND PL You’ll be straight. Good luck guys!
Wow! I'm an Army veteran (went through basic training 40 years ago.) Nice to see that drill sergeants are still SO professional and SO FOCUSED on soldier success! There are too many false stories/rumors about basic training and drill sergeants. I found that my DIs were AWESOME people, who indeed CARED about me/recruits, and our success as soldiers. They took their roles in our learning/preparation SERIOUSLY, because they KNEW that our lives -- indeed DEPENDED on what they taught us. (As did our follow-on careers.) THANKS for taking YOUR PERSONAL TIME to shared all this for recruits (and their families.) I can't imagine the challenges COVID have added to an already compressed/interactive training situation? Kudos to yourself and your DI peers, for soldiering-thru the challenges of COVID, to ensure our recruits indeed receive THE BEST training/preparation available in the entire world! Army Strong! @@blackturtle9347 He means medical paperwork for anything that might happen while you're under contract with the army. You might have nothing right now but if you aren't paying attention during a ruck or something and twist an ankle you're going to want medical paperwork that says you sustained the injury as a result of working for the military if at some point down the line your ankle becomes an issue.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS. make copies of government paperwork as well. AND NEVER give the last copy out. In the military paperwork is vital and when you dont have documentation sorry bud nothing they can do.

I ship out to Fort Jackson on June 8th. It seemed as if God didn't want me to join. First I needed an eye consult, then a waiver, but finally on the 29th I got in. Can't wait to train and get stronger. #14S

Same here I’m getting nervous close as I get working with a recruiter now,write them and I think you can bring cellphone but you gotta earn it? But just incase write them when hubby was in basic I wrote everyday and he told me to mark them by numbers in order, I guess they were holding his letters but incase you don’t get to call write I’m sure eventually you get to see them somewhere.

I’m at benning rn in gold phase. Only thing that’s different is you gotta wear a mask and no family day. And no more shark attack. If you get COVID you go to camp Kelly for quarantine for 10 days and then possibly get recycled depending on what training you missed.

Things has changed from the time I went though in 1983. They were on your ass from the time you got off the cattle trucks for about two weeks. They called it total control.you got yelled at, cussed and called names, but they didn't hit you.they would PT your ass off. They couldn't hit you or they would go to jail. Dad told me stories about when he went to Ft Polk in 1963 how they were treated a lot different what I went though. I was used to getting yelled at and cussed, however Dad would hit and kick on top of that. Me personaly they should have left the total control in, It helps weed the bad ones out, but times have changed. Keep up the good work.

Basic training was actually quite different when I got here at FLW, E-Co 2-48th. Drills were pretty chill as long as you kept your head down and did as you were told. Aside from that, I'm being discharged because medical reasons. I can also no longer join any other branch. So much for that lol.

I joined the Army in 1999 and went to Ft. Leonard Wood for BCT. Once I got there, I had to spend three weeks at the 43rd AG Reception Battalion waiting for our company to come together. It kinda sucked because our in-processing only took three or four days to complete, and the rest of the time there was nothing to do other than reading our Soldier's Manual, and the cadre NCO's did a whole lot of yelling... It was the perfect example of hurry up and wait. We were actually happy the day that our BCT Drill Sergeants showed up to do Shakedown and take us to our BCT platoons. Your comment about getting stuck in quarantine reminded me of this, Drill Sergeant... Thanks for this video!

I graduated last week from Fort Leonard Wood. Just don't get covid lol. *be on time to everything*. I didn't need any of my extra clothing when I got there, because they gave us Army PTs on the first day, and I wasn't allowed to wear civilian clothes anyway. No need to take much at all. Also, they're going to let you buy all of the necessities(like toothpaste and Deodorant)almost right away.

Basic training is seriously the easiest part of your career. You get to turn your brain off, and do every thing right. If you do it wrong, you'll eventually get it right. If I were to do basic training again, I wouldn't mind not experiencing the shark attack. It really just feels like a lot of organized chaos. To me it's a good job to set the tone of getting used to being uncomfortable. I wouldn't mind experiencing the new thing. It might be more conducive.
He thinks he's gonna enjoy carrying that m4. Ohhh. Lol. I went to bct in FLW, graduated last week, actually. I'm at AIT now. Glad to be done with bct lol.
That’s rough I know and just remember your Why!! You’ve got this and remain strong. Keep focused on the now and actively focus on the now and not what May or may be going on back home. Stay invested on the tasks at hand and give 200%.

That’s crazy I was going to join the navy and all the videos I watched said everyone still had to do 2 weeks in a hotel before they can even start training.
Thanks for these in depth videos. Seems like US basic training is not that different to the one I've been through already. On the positive side, I already been through this. On the negative is that I am old and broken. (But somehow passed MEPS) shipping to the Fort Benning to be 11X in a week. God bless!

@Nadia Future Army women92G crozz i too hate "failing". if you "fail" the asvab proper, you can retake it later, and the practice test on the army website is, well, a practice test. use the practice test as a diagnostic to see what you need to work on, and don't sweat it. and i got news for you, in basic, when you "fail" at something and your DS smokes you, know that they will smoke you no matter what, think of it as just more PT. even if you never "failed" at something in basic, your DS would pull something out of thin air to smoke you for.
The Shark Attack was a rude awakening for me really made me realize exactly what I got myself into and I loved it. Blanks being shot from 240 and dummie bangs going off on top of DS screaming at you fun 🤩

I heard that if a Drill asks you to grab their cover that its a trick question and your not supposed to touch it. Is this true or just a myth? Don't want to be unnecessarily smoked.

All these restrictions and loss of training really puts a stain on the military and your career. Im having second thoughts about this. Instead of being memorable its gonna be a process that i wanna rush through and forget.
It’s your choice. You can wait for another year or two to join without having to worry about COVID Restrictions but in doing so hopefully nothing bad happens that would preclude you in joining. Good luck and best wishes!

@@TEAMSWARTZ our combative course was completely cut out durring blue phase, I actually didn't spend any time at reception, when I got to Fort benning the next day I went to my troop for osut and durring "yellow phase" we spent one week doing nothing and the next week we did our in-processing from my actually troop. From what I heard from my troop commander, they are getting rid of yellow phase all together and making it a 4 or 5 week red phase. And to anyone who tested positive for covid at any point in training, they unfortunately got recycled to another troop. And the really big one that you mentioned in your video is family day weekend and graduation nobody could come which upset a good bit of my peers.
Ship out to Fort Jackson come june 22nd of this year, need help getting in shape for basic because, while not fat, I'm not in shape at all. Running is my main issue any advice?
